From Roanoke To Annapolis

April 1st, 2018 Jorma 16 comments

Ziessen Pesach and Happy Easter… to all!

Life has been uneventful which is just the way I like it. Back to the Jefferson Theater in Roanoke. Last time I was here as I recall it was on the Cami Tour with Robben Ford and Ruthie Foster.

Last time I ate at Buddy’s was over ten years ago… probably closer to fifteen. My son was still really a kid. Vanessa and i took him to dinner here.

Meanwhile, back home at the Ranch Spring is finally showing its face.

Hope the spring flowers are still there when I get home in a week or so.

Real Life On The Road

March 30th, 2018 Jorma 26 comments

I’ve been on the road for a really long time. Sometimes we can afford the bus and sometimes I drive myself. It’s just what we do. I missed driving our daughter to her first sleep away camp last year. I was on the road. I missed Vanessa’s birthday yesterday. I was on the road. Happy birthday Vanessa. I love you to the moon and back! Again, it’s just what we do. That’s the gig.

Yesterday we were just making our turn out of the hotel to head over to the Bijou Theater for the first Hot Tuna gig of this little run when a possibly impaired driver came over the hill about a quarter of a mile away. Lit it up and didn’t even hit the brakes as he hit us head on!

No skid marks... right into the bus

Jack and I were in the back lounge. It fell like the bus hit a concrete wall… and then we were stopped.

All the airbags deployed but he was going so fast he still hit the windshield.

Our driver is the best… and he had a dash cam that recorded the idiot coming at us. The officer simply said, ‘That’s all I need to see!’

We backed off the totaled vehicle after the accident report and headed over to the theater.

One of the firemen was heard to say, ‘He picked the wrong vehicle to run into.’

There but for the Grace of G_d….

Then finally we got to the theater.

21st Year At The Fur Peace Ranch

Early spring at the Ranch

Early spring at the Ranch

Drone shot by Jorma Kaukonen

Glorious… just glorious! No red bud yet… not much greening, but spring is on the way and after our hard winter, we’ll take all we can get. We just hosted the opening camp of our 21st year here at the Fur Peace Ranch and Jack Casady and I were the instructors. We’ve lived here i Southeast Ohio for 28 years now and it is an awesome place to live and an awesome place to raise kids. It’s a pretty darn nice location for just about anything. With 126 acres of hills, hollers, rivers an bottom land, it’s like having a state park in your back yard.

Transcontinental YoYo And Why Hunger?

December 18th, 2017 Jorma 8 comments

So we got home from the Tuna Tour on Sunday a week ago had a nice week at home with the girls and the critters and then off to San Francisco for the Why Hunger Benefit at the Viansa Winery in Sonoma. We got to San Francisco in time to fight traffic from the airport to get to Japan Town an some dinner.

Having spent two decades in Northern California it is now always a pleasure to return as a wide eyed tourist. Can’t say I miss the taxes and the gas prices though. That said, can’t complain about the vibe. Menasha who has been so generous to us in so many ways invited her friend David the Tea Man from Santa Cruz to welcome us with his amazing teas and a very spiritual ceremony.

As the show got rolling, Jack Casady and Tony Saunders played a beautiful double bass version of ‘Imagine.’ Wow! Then after some more great music, Hot Tuna hit the stage for a 90 minute set.

As we walked over, we weren’t exactly in the shadow of the Freedom Tower… but there it was! Dinner at the Temple Court was absolutely outstanding. Our compliments to the Chef!

On the way back to our hotel we chanced to walk by the Nancy Whisky Pub.

Back in the 80’s Steve Sacher had a pad here and our band, There Goes The Neighborhood was born in that building. The 80’s were tough on everyone, but we did have a few laughs along the way! Then it was down to Jersey and Mt. Tabor.

Tattoo Adventure In St. Louis

Nessa and I headed to St. Louis to Lyle Tuttle’s Old School Tattoo Convention with some inking in mind. Even though over the years I have collected a number of artist’s work, Lyle gave me my first tattoo at his studio over the old Greyhound Station in downtown San Francisco almost half a century ago.

Old School indeed...

The Convention was in the Holiday Inn and the venue was packed with Tattooists and ‘art lovers,’ aka tattooed humans. Nessa and I were there with an appointment to see Bridget Punsalang. Bridget normally holds court at the Needlewurks studio in Saratoga Springs, but we had made arrangements to meet her in St. Louis.

I wanted a skull, but I wanted a little some more artistic than just a skull… for in death there is also life. Here is the beginning of the work. It is finished for now… but there is more to come.

In death, there is also the circle of life...

Bridget is more than awesome… her artistic vision is off the charts.

Artist, and canvas... me.

This is my first new tattoo in over twenty years, but I’m fired up again. Inking done, we beat feet back to Ohio so i could get on the bus and head to New York City and Hot Tuna’s gig at the City Winery. After unloading at the hotel, Phil and I cabbed over to Chinatown for dinner at Wo Hop.

It’s been way more than twenty years since I ate here… it was just what I needed.

As for tonight… City Winery here we come!
