Another Night At The Egg

July 31st, 2010 Jorma 1 comment

The Albany gig at the Egg is quite different from our point of view. First of all, it looks like an egg. It’s a government building so all sorts of security measures are in place. It also sounds great and the folks there are a pleasure to work with. The audience was pretty darn fine too. Last night was our next to last show with Steve Earle on this run so we really looked forward to playing an encore with him which we did. Here is our set list:

Hot Tuna 20, 2010

After the show Steve headed to his hotel and we got on the bus and drove to Boston where I am now. Tonight we are at the House Of Blues. More will be revealed, for now, I’m going to try to catch forty more winks.

Another Man Done Gone

July 30th, 2010 Jorma 2 comments

I didn’t know Art Gish well. I would see him at services at the Hillel Center in Athens, Ohio I knew that he was an activist in every sense of the word and although I cannot say that I am a peaceful man in that way, I respected him for his honest commitment to humanity as he saw it. I would also often see him at the Farmer’s Market on Saturday in Athens. We would shake hands, comment on the weather, good or bad and the produce of the day. Being a citizen of a country like the United States afforded him a platform to speak his views that he would not have been allowed in most other countries and speak them he did. He did more than talk, he put his money where his mouth was. In his way he was a peaceful warrior for the truth as he saw it. He must be profoundly respected for that. Vanessa wrote a beautiful piece about Art on her Blog The Labyrinth. Here is the link for that piece: http://thelabyrinthatfurpeace.blogspot.com/2010/07/i-write-about-doing-service-work-from.html. My cousin Audrey up in Rhode Island sent me this piece after she read Vanessa’s Blog:

Tzedakah is usually associated with a “charity box” for coins found in most Jewish homes. However it means more than that in Jewish living. Art Gish was a beautiful example of our basic teachings -
Jewish or not! Rest in peace.

“”Tzedakah” is the Hebrew word for the acts that we call “charity” in English: giving aid, assistance and money to the poor and needy or to other worthy causes. However, the nature of tzedakah is very different from the idea of charity. The word “charity” suggests benevolence and generosity, a magnanimous act by the wealthy and powerful for the benefit of the poor and needy. The word “tzedakah” is derived from the Hebrew root Tzadei-Dalet-Qof, meaning righteousness, justice or fairness. In Judaism, giving to the poor is not viewed as a generous, magnanimous act; it is simply an act of justice and righteousness, the performance of a duty, giving the poor their due. ”

Thanks Audrey… That says it all. Goals worth striving for. I respect a person who will fight for what he believes in. I, as a work in progress aspire to that state. Art Gish will be sorely missed. We need more caring souls.

Destination Rutland, Vermont

July 26th, 2010 Jorma 3 comments

The humidity was still with us today, but the temperature was only in the seventies… a blessing for sure. It’s been a while since we’ve been up in these parts and we sure had a great time. While waiting for the boys to set up our gear, Phil, Jack, G.E. and I found a Japanese restaurant in town and it was delicious. Sadly, I didn’t get the name or I would have put a link in here. it was great. Anyway, it was right around the corner from the Paramount Theater so it should be easy to find. I’m still trying to figure out how to do this photo stuff so bear with me. We’ll see what happens. Anyway, here is our set list:

A Trip To Purchase, New York

July 25th, 2010 Jorma 6 comments

We spent the night in New Haven and drove down and back to the gig at SUNY, Purchase. What a simply beautiful theater they had there… and there was laundry too… a complete night. Steve Earle’s set was killer as always and by the time he finished his great set, we were indeed ready to rock. In the dressing room was a gigantic pipe organ, real Phantom Of the Opera stuff. What a scene! Anyway, here is our set list:

New Haven On A Summer’s Night

July 24th, 2010 Jorma 3 comments

So here we were tonight in New Haven at the Schubert Performing Arts Center. What a beautiful venue and right around the corner from Louis Lunch from which the world famous hamburger is purported to have originated. Steve Earle had a traffic riddled trip up which meant we didn’t have time to learn a new song with him for the encore, so it will just have to be done tomorrow night at SUNY Purchase. Here’s a picture of a brief stop we made yesterday coming up the Jersey Turnpike. ge Yeah, life on the road is tough. Anyway, here is our set list for tonight.

York, Pennsylvania And Onwards…

July 22nd, 2010 Jorma 3 comments

It was a beautiful day as we rolled into York yesterday and checked into the Yorktowne Hotel. It was another of those historic hotels… very nice. That said, sometimes on the road there’s nothing like a motel with a guest laundry. That problem was solved over at the Strand… they had a laundry room. Now we’re talking! This morning we’re going to be heading North… back towards Connecticut and New York. I hate to keep yakking about the shows… (well actually I don’t, we’ve been having so much fun and the band just gets tighter and tighter) anyway, here’s the point. Get out there and come and see us. Steve Earle is not only one of the greatest singer/songwriters… he’s a fabulous performer as well. We all love this tour. You can also get one of the coolest posters our friend Kevin Morgan has made (and he’s made plenty). Check this out:

hot-tuna-poster

Yeah, we love this one. What a cool looking bunch of guys and only at the Schubert Theater and SUNY Purchase Performing Arts Center will these great posters be sold autographed. What are you waiting for?

OK… Last night Steve headed home after his show so our next Jam will be at the Schubert Performing Arts Center in New Haven, Connecticut. Get your tickets today and don’t forget our show in Purchase, New York at SUNY Purchase. Anyway, here is our set list from last night:

Old Baltimore And The Ram’s Head Live

July 21st, 2010 Jorma 4 comments

The Hot Tuna/Steve Earle show landed in Baltimore today and we rocked the Ram’s Head Live. There was a bittersweet moment for me when I got to the dressing room. I recalled that the last time I was here was the last time I saw my friend Bill Haile alive. Bill was my friend through elementary school, junior high school and high school. He graduated the year before me because I lost a year when we went to Pakistan for three years but the memories of us as little boys on Northampton Street riding bicycles and later getting our first cars together will live in my heart forever. Bill was just a great guy and although we didn’t see each other much, we were always friends. I remember that time at the Ram’s Head. His sister Jane was with him and I had my son Zach with me. I was so glad they got to meet each other.

As we age, the flow of life becomes so fragile and the moments so very precious. These will be etched in my heart.

Now, I don’t know if any of this is related, but good old fun loving Hot Tuna rocked the house tonight! It was just a grand night. Steve Earle’s show was triumphant as well, and we got to play the encore together. I have to say, this is just a great double bill. I’m loving every moment of it and I hope we get to do it together again sometime. This is one powerful show. With that in mind, here is our set list:

Hot Tuna 12, 2010
Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady
Barry Mitterhoff, Skoota Warner
& G.E.Smith
Ram’s Head Live
Baltimore, Maryland
Tuesday, July 20, 2010

1. Been So Long
2. Hesitation Blues
3. Can’t Get Satisfied
4. Ode To Billy Dean
5. Get A Little with G.E.
6. Living Just For You
7. Sea Child
8. If This Is Love, I Want My Money Back
9. Bowlegged Woman
10. Buffalo Skinners with G.E.
11. Water Song
12. 99 Year Blues
13. Talkin’ Bout You
14. Come Back Baby
15. Encore: Song with Steve Earle (I’ll get the name of this song before the tour is over… I promise.)

Listen folks, with G.E. Smith and Steve Earle on board, this is one HT show you don’t want to miss. You folks up there in New Haven, Connecticut… the Schubert Theater is waiting for you… ditto you folks near SUNY Purchase. Who knows when you’ll get to see a show like this again. There, I’ve said it… shameless self promotion I know, but what the heck. I’m going to sleep with a pure and energized heart!
