January 29th, 2011 Jorma 6 comments

After dealing with flight delays along with everyone else, Myron and I got to New Jersey… we made the rehearsal yesterday afternoon and the gig last night. The CAMI tour with Hot Tuna, Charlie Musselwhite, and Jim Lauderdale is underway and all things considered, I thought it went really well. On board is also Barry Mitterhoff, G.E.Smith and Skoota Warner. An all star cast to say the least.

Bus call is soon, so this will have to be brief. This set list is imperfect, I know… I don’t know the names of all the songs yet even if I know hows to play them. I’ll get better, I promise. In any case, here is what happened last night… more or less:

Living The Dream Pt. 2

January 28th, 2011 Jorma 6 comments

Well, Myron and I finally made it to New Jersey about midnight or so and then to the hotel. I took a quick look at my computer before hitting the sack and this cool Jamband article came up. Check it out… it’s a dandy. Anyway, getting ready to head on over to the gig at the Bergen Performing Arts Center and log some rehearsal time with the boys.

It took a little time to get here, but good old Hot Tuna is ready to go. It looks cold out there. Thank goodness for chicken soup!

Living The Dream Pt. One

January 27th, 2011 Jorma 5 comments

Just a short note written at 0455 here at the Columbus Airport in Ohio. Big storms on the East Coast yesterday… Newark closed… all our flights canceled… Yikes! Well, what was supposed to be a simple afternoon flight has turned into a two day traveling episode. As of this moment, all things seem to be working and I’m going to close my computer and head on over to the gate.

Bon Voyage us!

Whoops… flash update… morning flight canceled! Better get on the phone…

The dream continues!

Home, Home, Home

January 22nd, 2011 Jorma 5 comments

Well, we got home just in time for a decent snowstorm and you know, I loved it! One moment there was this:
leaving lahaina
…and what a memory to take with us.

Then, on my way to Canton today there was this…

In the distance you can see the Shade River side of the Fur Peace Ranch. There is indeed beauty in winter that I have always loved. It must be my Finnish/Russian ancestry.

Well, tomorrow is a big football day so I’m going to need to rest up so I can handle the stress.

It’s great to be home!

another day closer to Spring

Remember, every day is a day closer to Spring!

…And Then It’s Time To Go Home

January 18th, 2011 Jorma 5 comments

Well, it’s been a fabulous trip to Hawaii in general and Maui in particular. Our FPR Workshop was outstanding and the three days off we had were rejuvenating. This morning we went into Old Lahaina for breakfast and took a moment’s pause to say hello and goodbye to the old Banyan Tree.

It’s been wonderful, but the Mainland and work is awaiting us. My next entry will be from the Southeast Ohio winter of Hillside Farm.

Up Country On The Island

crater 1
We drove up to the crater on Haleakala today and even at ten thousand plus feet, the temperature was temperate. The crater was unbelievable as always. This is a view you just don’t get tired of.

crater 2

After hanging on the mountaintop for a while, we started back down and stopped off at Kula to visit my old friend Babalou and his daughter. He cooked us a splendid home cooked Mexican dinner and I took left overs home to the house. Mmmm… breakfast tomorrow morning. We’ll be starting to pack tomorrow as we leave for home on Tuesday.

What a nice time this has been.

And Then… A Day Off

January 15th, 2011 Jorma 2 comments

wish you were here

It’s been a busy time for me… the last two and a half months that is. For all practical purposes it’s been non-stop which in these days of economic stress is a blessing. That said, after my show with Maria Muldaur and Dan Hicks last night, I slept late today and except for a long walk down to the beach to watch the whales early this morning, I’ve just been sitting around. This would make me crazy after a while, but today I love it. Anyway, I didn’t really keep track, but here is what I played last night… more or less:

Jorma Alone Once More
At The Maui Arts And Cultural Center
Kahalui, Maui
Hawaii
Friday, January 14, 2011

1. Death Don’t Have No Mercy
2. Search My Heart
3. Second Chances
4. Come Back Baby
5. That’ll Never Happen No More
6. Genesis
7. River Of Time
8. Serpent Of Dreams
9. San. Francisco Bay Blues
10. …and some others I can’t remember
11. Encore: Embryonic Journey

Maria and Dan Hicks were outstanding and they had a great band. I didn’t stay all night… the little one was getting sleepy, but I stayed long enough to hear most of a great set!

Well, it looks as if we’re going to have to eat some fresh sushi tonight but before then, another nap might be in order. I might as well enjoy this now. I’ll be rehearsing next week and then it’s the CAMI tour for the next couple of months. As always, it’s good stuff but I’m going to enjoy a couple of days of nothing.
