The Roots Run Deep

November 30th, 2011 Jorma 4 comments

We got to Finland yesterday morning… the trip and the seven hour time change had me pretty whipped but I rallied by evening to go out to a traditional Finnish Restaurant for dinner with some relatives from my Grandmother Ida’s side. Some of these folks were so young I had never met them and some I hadn’t seen in over a quarter of a century. Family is family though and we had a wonderful evening.

Indeed I feel the threads of ancestry here and really, they are more like ropes than threads. The bond of blood is unbreakable.

I’ve got to get ready for this evening’s gig at the Savoy Theater here in Helsinki. You’d best believe that there will be more nostalgic ramblings to follow.

Thanksgiving And Off To The Old Country… Finland

November 28th, 2011 Jorma 6 comments

Thanksgiving was such a treat… the whole family together, kids and adults… in-laws and friends. Superb, simply superb and eaten in the Beatrice Love Kitchen at the Fur Peace Ranch. My son got one day to ride his bike at Hillside Farm, and yes… that’s mud on the tires!

Well, I’m JFK right now waiting for a flight to Finland. More when i get to the Old Country.

With Chanukah and Christmas in the air, how bad could it be?

Onward!

A Night For The Blues In Chapel Hill

A Night For The Blues In Chapel Hill

Tonight Stefan Grossman, Ernie Hawkins, Elijah Wald were part of a show at the University Of North Carolina paying tribute to the Rev. Gary Davis.

Elijah gave a great lecture and the three of us played in turn. Ernie went on first, then Stefan then me. Now I didn’t keep a set list tonight but here at least are some of the songs I played not necessarily in the right order:

1. True Religion
2. Death Don’t Have No Mercy
3. Let Us Get Together Right Down Here
4. Come Back Baby
5. Things That Might Have Been
6. I Am The Light Of This World
7. Full Go Round

After I finished, Ernie and Stefan came our and we did, Mississippi Blues and Table Sitting in Heaven.

What a great night… great venue and an audience of people who really understood the music… it’s part of their heritage down here!

I love it!

Resting In Silent Honor

Resting In Silent Honor

I reflect with gratitude on our brave men and women who serve. Those who have fallen… those who stand… those who walked in the past, those who walk today and those who will come… I honor their service, their bravery and their love of country and family!
