Halloween, Sandy And Beyond

October 30th, 2012 Jorma 10 comments

Well, we all know now what a monster storm Sandy turned out to be… and thank G_d more loves weren’t lost… stuff is just stuff and can be replaced. Our Rev Gary Davis Weekend at the Fur Peace Ranch started out magnificently as it always does, this time with Ernie Hawkins, Myself and Stefan Grossman. Saturday, the David Bromberg dropped in and played a sold out show here… plus I got to sit in… always an honor.

As Sunday was rolling around, we realized that Sandy was the real deal, and many folks opted to drive out early so they could get home before disaster struck and closed everything down. All in all, in spite of the Sandy Drama… a good time was had by all and we shall live to pick another day.

Think about this… on Friday, it was in the 80’s. This morning, here is the view from my back porch.

What happened to Autumn?

What happened to Autumn?

In an hour or so, I’m leaving for Minneapolis and the Dakota Jazz Club Restaurant. Heading North when the weather gets bad… that’s how we pros do it.

From the Gate... Hawaii is in the distance...

Last night Barry and I played the Swedish-American Hall on Market St. in San Francisco. The last time I was here, it was to have Smorgasbord with my ex-wife… (May she rest in peace)… The late 60’s or early 70’s I would say. Well… this was a first time for us and Barry Mitterhoff and I had a great time.

We are staying at the hotel we were at with Jack Casady and his lovely wife Diana… the last days of the Hot Tuna Summer Tour. We knew that Diana was nearing the end of her journey… that it was time for her to start her final journey home. I was able to say hello and goodbye to her on the morning of that last Sweetwater gig in late July. It would be the last time I would see her this side of the vale. Bittersweet memories here in Corte Madera.

Rest well sister… you’ll be happy to know we’re still on the road…

Always…

We are made welcome by the Maitre D' at the casino hotel

We are made welcome by the Maitre D' at the casino hotel

Boy, you can’t make this stuff up. My Mom used to live up on Talmont in North Shore Tahoe and I certainly feel welcome in these parts. We were here to play the High Sierra Brewing Company and play we did. Being jet lagged and all, I was up about 0300 so Barry and I had a chance to drive around and see some sights. First there was breakfast at the Comma Coffee House… actually we just dined there this morning too. Great food… and not a slot in sight.

Yep... my name in lights... sort of

Yep... my name in lights... sort of

We walked by the gig… it was still almost dark… we just took a look and walked on.

Coincidence? I think not...

Coincidence? I think not...

All kinds of cool stuff in this town… including this great little church. Reminds me of a song. We had some time on our hands so we drove up into the hills on this beautiful, crisp, Fall day.

How nice does it have to get?

How nice does it have to get?

On our way back to the hotel, we stopped by The Lady Tamales. Now I know the GPS and the internet stuff calls it Ladies Tamales, but Fidelina Suarez… the Lady in Question calls it The Lady… and it was delicious… corn husk tamales… fresh. Lunch for Barry and myself came to $12.95. Go there… dig it. It’s the greatest!

Time marched on and it was gig time… and here is our set list:

Off To The Silver State And Another FPR Giveaway

October 17th, 2012 Jorma 6 comments

It’s 0043 and it’s time to head on over to La Guardia to fly to Nevada… living the dream, as always. With the gig coming up at the Swedish American Hall in San Francisco on the 20th of October I just wanted to reiterate this cool Fur Peace Ranch offer.

Fur Peace Ranch and Jorma Kaukonen (me) announce a Fur Peace Ranch workshop giveaway. Every person who purchased a ticket to the Swedish American Hall at Cafe Du Nord, San Francisco, CA on October 20th, 2012 will be entered into a raffle to win a standard weekend workshop at the Fur Peace Ranch in Pomeroy, Ohio with Jorma Kaukonen. Just send your ticket stub or proof of purchase along with your telephone number to Fur Peace Ranch, 39495 St Clair Rd., Pomeroy, Ohio 45769 and your name will be entered. The winning name will drawn here in Ohio on October 27th, 2012.

Vanessa and I have decided to do a number of giveaways a year so that people who might otherwise not have a chance to come to the Ranch… would… well, get that chance. How good does it have to get?

Off to the airport… the dream continues…

If you can beat this offer… i want to know about it so I can get in on it!

Another hotel... welcome to my world!

Thanks to David Wolff’s vision, ingenuity and persistence… Breakdownway has become a really delightful instructional force to be reckoned with. None of this would have happened without David… and well me too. We have grown immensely since our moderately humble beginnings and we now have an amazing collection of wonderfully eclectic musician instructors who are putting themselves out there to teach. Those of you players out there should check it out… it is really amazing! If you can’t get to one of our Fur Peace Ranch sessions, log onto Breakdown Way.

We taped about half a dozen new lessons at Studio Instrument Rentals so I now have plenty of new lessons in the can. Keep in mind, we now have more instructors than I can count, so check it out yourself.

Our friend, the great chef Tom Colicchio stopped by to check out the action and of course, I grabbed him for a picture.

Me and Tom Colicchio...

What a gig… music, food… Hmmm… time for breakfast!

Old School In Earlville

The beautiful Earlville Opera House

The beautiful Earlville Opera House

Yesterday we motored way upstate here in NY and docked in Earlville at the Earlville Opera House. The place was so beautiful and the good folks who run the place were so hospitable it just couldn’t have gotten much nicer. This place is a little window in time to a less complicated era… a good place to be. Barry Mitterhoff and I enjoyed the sound check so much, we could hardly wait to get to the stage.
