…Of Time And The River

In 1955 when my Dad brought us back from his posting in Karachi, Pakistan one of the first people I met when I started at Wilson HS in the 10th grade was Chick Casady… Jack’s older brother. He introduced me to the blues and along the way to his younger brother Jack which worked out pretty well for both of us. Chick worked for us when we were in the Airplane and well… it was always great do have another D.C. boy along for the ride, and what a ride it was.

Anyway, Chick suffered a massive heart attack a couple of days ago and we didn’t know if he was going to make it. He’s survived thus far and is able to communicate although his future as far from certain. I put this out there because a prayer circle wouldn’t hurt and could help. Obviously we are not privy to whatever plans life might have in store for us but most of us would like it to be this side of the grass for as long as possible.

Get better brother Chick!

Jorma, So sorry to hear the news about Chick. Please give Jack my regards. He and Chick are in my thoughts and prayers. I remember seeing Chick backstage on several Tuna tours back in the 70’s. A very quiet soul. Always doing his work with a kind word or two. At a time like this all we can do is “Keep on prayin”. Please let’s start praying for Chick.

Back in unsuspected times when one won the lottery ‘cause able to find imported LPs from the USA, to read the directions on the inner sleeve or printed on the back cover, was a must. So to get acquainted with the names of the family gravitating around the leader was something that had to be learnt by heart. There were not many occasions to know who was who, but it didn’t matter, ‘cause our heart was wide open for all the names, nick names and surnames that could ever be written on any corner of the LP. Then is when an open heart familiarized to names without a face on the other side of the planet, wondering’ whether if they were brothers or wives and in any case they were as they are now a vital part of the living myth of the album! So without even knowing them, they have a precise space in our hearts and live in our minds since the first time their names appeared. I thought Chick Casady was a girl till the 80ies, ‘cause of the name. The love I have for Jack allows me to be deeply mindful as if Chick was my bro.

That was an amazing show! Thanks so much. What was the song that you prefaced by saying “it has no redeeming value, but we all get to play loud!”…? I loved the bass lead-in!

Thank you so much for giving focus to Chick’s need of prayer Jorma. I underwent cancer treatment last summer and have no doubt that prayer was a positive influence on the outcome. Chick will be in my mind and prayers. I will dedicate the music at our weekly music circle tonight to Chick. Be at peace Jack.

All who knew Chick are sad to hear of his passing today, but are blessed to have known him, a true brother in light. R.I.P. Chick Casady… I wish I had taken time to have even more beers, & hear even more of your stories… Amongst those I do know of include getting busted taking Jimi Hendrix around on Acid while jaywalking on Jimi’s 1st visit in Washington D.C… 🙂
