Last night was the final show of 2014 at the Fur Peace Station and what a show it was. Our very own John Hurlbut, Ranch Manager, got together with a bunch of friends from Dayton (the Gem City) and put on a show to remember. In the late 50’s I lived in Greene County when I was going to Antioch College and many aspects of my life were formed in those years. Not only did I learn to finger pick from Ian Buchanan back then, but I bought my old 1958 Gibson J-50 for a hundred bucks at Pop’s Music store in Dayton.

Anyway, the music scene was alive and well then and it is even more vibrant today. Here is a list of the personnel of the Gem City rockers who comprised The Spin last night:

1. Rich Reuter, lead guitar and vocals
2. Khrys Blank, vocals and tambourine
3. Erich Reith, percussion
4. Bryan (Hazy) Russell, keyboards
5. Eric Henry, guitar & lap steel
6. Chris Carter, drums
7. Brad Denson, bass

This was a show to remember and we’re already talking about ending the season next year the same way. Many thanks to the Lost On Iddings who morphed into the Spins with Hurl, but also to their families who came along to enjoy a lovely fall night at the Fur Peace Ranch.

A more than grand time was had by one and all… Thanks folks! See ya next year and a Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Sure wish we lived closer to FPR, would love to make more than just the annual pilgrimage and would have loved to have seen Hurl and the Spins. John is such a stand up guy.

Like Bob B said, see you you in Collingdale and at the Beacon!!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.. My heart was broken yesterday when I found out it would be Katy Perry and not Hot Tuna playing the halftime show at the super bowl.

Same thing happened with he, Anna. I hacked at Badge in my own way, and then was shown another way by friends who knew better and it was like a new world opening up. It was so much easier.

Same thing with Water Song. It had long been a favorite of mine when I first started trying to figure it out. In standard tuning. Then I got the Jorma Homespun tape (certainly a trailblazer in VCR usefulness) and learned it was played in D tuning, and things fell into place, sorta. I never did get the low E thump quite mastered 🙂

Ah, music is such a living, breathing thing, and that may be why it means so much to me.

Hey Jim… by the bye… Water Song is in G tuning… D, G, D, G, B, D… it’s even easier that way. The beginning signature like is all 16th notes… four three note figures executed as forward rolls, and two couplets… each note has equal time value.

      123, 123, 123, 123, 12, 12

Certainly some inspirational blog entrees. I am liking what carlo says…
Steady as She Goes Jorma just Ain’t In So Hurry
    very cute…
John must be about glowing from his gig. I am happy for him.
For years I have played a certain little riff in the song, Badge, as best as my ear had made out at the time, and then I just kept doing it that way. The other day, I heard someone playing it just a bit differently. I liked it, so am changing how i play it. A small change that brings new life to the song.
