Ohio Tattoo Museum in Bidwell, Ohio... Zach in the glass

Today, Zach and I drove over to Bidwell… near Gallipolis to meet Rich Thomas at his Ohio Tattoo Museum for a Sunday get together. There was all kinds of really cool flash and of course, beaucoup tattooed folks.

Yep... we're supporters

Yep... we're supporters

I was to hang out with Rich and his folks and play a little music as an afternoon interlude.

It has been noted by the great Bob Roberts… L.A. tattooist extraordinaire that ‘Blank skin is like money in the bank!’ Now I know that tattoos are not for everyone and that’s OK… those that are ‘in the family’ know what I’m talking about.

Not everyone who showed up this afternoon were tattooed… my son is a blank canvas… so is my buddy Myron, and they may remain that way. If we were all the same, what a boring world it would be!

I got my first tattoo from Lyle in his old shop on Seventh St. in San Francisco over the Greyhound Station. A demi-monde, the way it was meant to be! Chadwick was the first Bull Terrier I ever met. I loved that dog!

Then around 1500 it was time for me to pick a few tunes. I picked up my Jorma Kaukonen Martin M-30 and had a real good time for almost an hour!

Afterwards Zach and I met Vanessa, Izze, Ginger & Montana back in Athens, Ohio for a yummy dinner at Salaam and then home to Hillside Farm.

    Barbara J. here:

If you guys want to ignore Andriy, go right ahead. Ignore me too.

Andriy had a great time yesterday at the parade. It was very patriotic and he liked the flags that the crowd was waving. He was wearing his Hot Tuna stars and stripes t-shirt and there were a few Hot Tuna fans in the crowd, greeting him with high-fives and “Jorma!”, “Hot Tuna!”, “Jorma and Jack!”. Andriy returned their enthusiastic greetings with “HOTUNAMERICA !”

While you were here “ignoring” us, I can assure you that we did not waste one second of the day thinking about you. Your inability to move on isn’t having any affect on us. We had a great time yesterday. Andriy will have a great time today, although he is working. I will have a great time today, a beautiful Saturday. The same for us tomorrow. Andriy is immune to childish nonsense.
I don’t care if you are sleepy or dopey.

Great movie. The original “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”.
I think in this movie, if you ignore them, maybe they’ll just go away.

Only a baby like you would express himself with “Yawn”. You’ve got nothing else to bring except to try to extend a non-argument into more of the same.
It’s evident that I made the right decision to go work in the U.K., rather than meet up with you. My friends are all adults. You are childish.
Nothing I could post would prove that point better, than your comment.

Today Andriy and I went to the parade in honor of the women’s team. It was a great celebration for females and Americans of every age and a welcome addition to the realm of great pro-sports.

All you did today was to post: “Yawn”. How exciting for you.

your question was already asked by you to Andriy and he replied with a friendly answer. Are you starting a competition? Since you didn’t post an email address for me to leave you my phone #, I think that you really don’t have any legit questions to ask me. Having read enough of the foolish comments here, I’ve got work to do.

Happy fishing, johno. Hope you have a good catch day or see some more bald eagles. Peace and all of that to you.

I happen to like Trump for president. He is the one who isn’t bought off by anyone – he tells it like it is! What is the alternative Clinton or Bush – they had their turn and neither one did anything.

  12. Comment made on July 9, 2015 by Dusty

JGeez, guess I had better apologize while all other life is snoozing. That’s what you get when you stay up all night watching entirely too much TV. The images and rhetoric: they transfix me. For example, Donald Trump. HOLYCRAP….what in the…where in the……………….

What in the world is lurking in this new-fangled gadget of mine? Must be a two-headed monster, possibly a hydra. Either that or it’s this little chromium switch. If I can’t figure it out on my own, I’ll have to have it looked at. What would amount to a double frontal lobotomy, of which I’m capable of if I can actually locate the cranium, which is embedded near the oral cavity. But this seems to be a fingers issue. JGeez, just cut my fingernails today. Notice the spelling; pleases everyone and injects the initials of a certain master guitarist. Spelled JERRY!

No Jim, you’ve been very kind and willing to engage in a reasonable political debate with Andriy that led to a friendly resolution.
There is no “vitriol of the world here”, just the freedom to express opinions and ask reasonable questions.

I have made reference to Dennis McNally’s book, “Long Strange Trip” here before.
It’s a well-written book with many good stories for Grateful Dead fans.

Hi Barbara! Thanks for the Life Magazine heads up. I hope your not being mistaken for the other Barbara. I can see where your timely entry could confuse things. If you’re going to one of the NYC area shows, look for me, I’ll be the person wearing the Hot Tuna shirt. Haha!

    This is Barbara J. here.
Is that the best you’ve got, John B.?
After an empty complaint that you already brought up on a comments section a few months ago and were invited to get my contact info from Joe in DC., you just brought it up again.
    “Thanks for sharing”?

Tell you what: I’m going out to do some charity work now but will be back at around 9:30 tonight. Post an email (just create a new temporary one for the occasion.) I will then send you an email with my phone # and you will know that it’s me because my name will be in the address.
Then we can have a private discussion about whatever questions you still want me to answer. Just put on your big-boy pants and add a Pampers Pull-Up underneath.

    The same goes to johno.
I will be checking all night and even tomorrow.
    Sharing is caring, guys.@John B

So, for those inquiry minds who want to know from an extinct blog contributor (a woman)….. Life magazine has a special edition “The Grateful Dead; 50 Years Along The Golden Road.” on sale until 9/11/15. Jorma and Grace by the way, are interviewed. Both tell a personal story of Gerry and the Dead back in the early San Francisco music scene days. Also, are some pictures I’ve never seen before, like Grace standing in line at the Fillmore Auditorium the evening she is performing for the first time with the Airplane (1966).

Anyway, interesting reading, great pics and lots of memories revisited.

Yes the spelling for that word is “Geez”. I see “Jeez” and ask Barbara what is definition? She say “I don’t know, Jeez like “Jeezy” the name for Kanye West”?
She look to see and then says oh it is that guy again, gave me the same insecure comments needs to grow up”.

I am now at Barbara’s apartment. It is my day off and I am helping her to fill bags of the toiletries and supplies for the homeless people who are around by the train station near we live. We will go to give them at 7:30pm.
You have any questions or “hmmm” comments for her? Be a man, and ask her here.
Just don’t complain when you get a answer.
As for me I have faced bigger things than childish comments sent to me here.
“Verbal assault” is not something you know really about. Assault is something you did not ever experience either or you would know what it is.

Thanks to the people here who were kind to me they know who they are.
For the rest of you, the floor of cyberspace here is open ask your questions to Barbara and you will get answers. Until 7:30 when we leave to go do charity work.

  30. Comment made on July 8, 2015 by Andriy

I don’t know who you are. See my answer above to johno.
This is the same pile of petty comments again.@JB

  31. Comment made on July 8, 2015 by Andriy

No, see my answer above to John. She was here in Brooklyn yesterday and she eats with us and we read the newspapers and learn more English. I get a break and go to her apartment to visit because she has computer and I can use it. She was right there when I ask “What is Jeez?”@johno

  32. Comment made on July 8, 2015 by Andriy

Yes, I have not only her ear but her friendship. I speak to her almost every day and most days more than one time. I did not make verbal assault against Joey. In fact I was not responding to him, just to “John R”. He seems to be o.k. and not offended.

There were no final plans made for meeting to go to the museum because you don’t remember that a verbal assault was done to Barbara on a comments section here just before that time. For who was involved check and read for yourself. She did not want to go because of the petty comments. She went out of the country to work instead.

When you ask this question before, look it up here for when, Barbara
ask me to respond said that she would like to go to museum with you and anybody else interested. You have the email of Joe in D.C. and she say to contact him. You did not and now you bring this topic again. You are welcome to come to break bread with me at my restaurant but it is not in Manhattan so before the show would be too much time to go in to Manhattan.

Barbara does not eat at the restaurant where I work every day. She sometimes is there on Monday or Tuesday and we eat, study English and listen to Hot Tuna.
    @John B

I’m betting there will be a Beacon show, it ain’t early December in NYC without a hot fucking tuna show at the Beacon.

    Everyday? Ya think ? Geez……

  37. Comment made on July 8, 2015 by johno

Maybe Barbara eats at Andriy’s restaurant every day.

  38. Comment made on July 8, 2015 by John B

No offense taken here John R. However, I was offended by the verbal assault leveled by Andriy against Joey . Are you well today Andriy? You claim that Barbara is no longer interested in a life of petty comments . How would you know Andriy? Do you claim to speak for her? If you have her ear please give her my regards and ask her why she failed to show at the MET last December for our planned meeting.

  39. Comment made on July 8, 2015 by John R.

No offense intended, and apologies if any was taken.

  40. Comment made on July 7, 2015 by DennisK

    Jorma,
Your support and pride in the local shops, culture and heritage reminds me of the love for all things Martin Guitar in the Nazareth Pa/Lehigh Valley area. Your pal Craig Thatcher will be capping off a big Martin fest on Main Street. I saw him the other night and he was talking about his PBS/Jorma and Jack taping. I am proud to live in such a thriving live music community and I get to hang with so many fine pickers.

  41. Comment made on July 7, 2015 by bob b.

    Joey… isn’t it spelled geez?

  42. Comment made on July 7, 2015 by Andriy

Barbara says: “Get over yourself, “Jeez” and all of the rest of your insecurities. Grow up.”

This is why she does not post here anymore, she gets the petty comments in return.
She does not live a life concerned with petty comments. I do not live that life because I know what a good life is worth living.

  43. Comment made on July 7, 2015 by Andriy

No, the question was not about Kanye West. No “Jeez”.
Only a malcontent would post that.
If Jorma wanted to or cared to express any comment about that, I think he would .
This is his blog and he could write anything about that topic if he wanted.
    Settle down easy.
    (But not “Jeezy”).

  44. Comment made on July 7, 2015 by Joey Hudoklin

    Jeez.

  45. Comment made on July 7, 2015 by Andriy

All good and great things must come to an end.
Why does Jorma need to comment on the Grateful Dead and their final shows?
You can still go to see Phil and Friends.
Be happy to have what was and let go gently for things that have been mutually decided by the Grateful Dead band members.@John R.

Hopefully I’m wrong – I actually hope there will be a show. It’s just not on Jorma’s show schedule yet. I keeping my fingers crossed.

  48. Comment made on July 7, 2015 by John R.

Jorma: I realize this is an entirely unrelated topic, but do you have any thoughts (or any that you’d care to express) on the Grateful Dead’s “Fare Thee Well” shows? (Enquiring minds want to know.) I don’t recall seeing any.

  49. Comment made on July 7, 2015 by Mike Anderson

Got my 1st tattoo at a small shop across the street from the Trailway’s Bus station in Washington D.C. As the older gentleman was setting up he told me if the pain got too bad I could bite down on an 18 inch rubber, well I’ll leave it to your imagination here, that he’d pulled out from behind his desk. This was back in the mid 70’s and that parlor had been there since my high school days in Bladensburg, MD.

  50. Comment made on July 7, 2015 by John B

Johno why don’t you think there will be a December show?

  51. Comment made on July 6, 2015 by bob b.

JOHNO….. I remember last year, Jacks 70th concert was announced the last week of July.

  52. Comment made on July 6, 2015 by johno

I guess there will be no December concert at the Beacon this year – I keep my fingers crossed that you and Jack will come back to the city – it’s been kind of like a winter tradition. I’ll see you up in Woodstock. Your son Zach is a tall, handsome boy – a chip off the ole block.

  53. Comment made on July 6, 2015 by Joey Hudoklin

Sounds like a swell time for everyone Jorma. Yes, Tattoos aren’t for everyone. I’m a blank canvas myself.
You were a trailblazer for many in this area, not to mention your significant contribution to the psychedelic sound. But also…people forget sometimes that who else among your contemporaries dared to put out a live acoustic first album?
I see in the local Santa Cruz rag that you’re booked at the Kumbwaa jazz club in Nov. I also don’t see it yet on your website. I sure hope it’s confirmed. You might be interested to know that your on a first name basis here. Advertised only as “Jorma”.
