Another week has come and gone and then some. We had a camp last weekend with G.E.Smith and Woody Mann. It is always great to hang with these two guys… personally and musically.

Spring is unfolding

Spring is unfolding

Now it is true that Spring is unfolding, but on this weekend we had a couple of really cold nights… a last gasp of Winter. The FPR is getting back into the rhythm of camp season and what with that and the Pho Restaurant, as always it’s a full plate. It’s a good plate though. Last Saturday night came and it was concert time at the Station. The show was G.E. and myself. We love doing this show. We just hit the stage and play songs together. On this particular night, we had a captive Woody Mann… so for us it was quite an evening. We didn’t do a set list and Myron did his best to keep track of the songs, so this is incomplete… but at least it’s something!

G.E. plays the legendary River Of Time guitar! Thanks for that Bud and Tracy!

G.E. plays the legendary River Of Time guitar! Thanks for that Bud and Tracy!

I didn’t get the first solo GE songs of each set. (GE did 3 first Set and 2 second Set, I think?) So sayeth Myron Hart II.

Jorma Kaukonen, G.E. & Woody Mann

Ain’t In No Hurry
Second Chances
Things That Might Have Been
Whining Boy
Highway 61
Barbeque King
Arrowhead
Death Don’t Have No Mercy… with Woody
Sweet Loraine… with Woody

That’ll Never Happen No More
Living In The Moment
GE. – Trail Of The Buffalo
Come Back Baby
GE – Handsome Molly
Search My Heart – Woody… from here to the end…
Sleep Song
GE – Buddy Bolden Blues
Candy Man
GE – Let It Rock
Keep Your Lamps Trimmed And Burning
Encore: Who knows?

Thanks Myron… better than nothing!

On Tuesday night my goddaughter Mia Falzarano stopped by on her way to Cleveland.

The last time this young lady was here, she was barely walking, now she’s in her last year of Law School. What a world, and how glad I am to be part of it!

On Wednesday, Vanessa celebrated her 55th birthday. The hits just keep on coming. Vanessa is even more beautiful today than when I first met her, and that wasn’t yesterday! It’s been a fine week, all things told and this weekend is an ‘off’ weekend at the Ranch so I’m guessing yard work is in store, as soon as it dries up from the mega rain we had last night. In the meantime…

Onward!

Holey big-girl panties, Batman. Trouble is, when it gets slimy AND really stinks, some people don’t have the sense G-d gave a billy goat with regard to doing it differently or NOT AT ALL. After all, let’s give credit where credit is due: at least they know what BS is; B is for baby. The rest of it needs to sink in. PHEW

I still love Ronnie Lane and all of my friends who have passed.
They live on in my heart and thoughts.
Currently, Levon Helm has been cheering me on. He knows I’m on the case, after I got a hot lead from a NY Post reader who contacted me after that fish-fry.
So I’ve been working on something that doesn’t give me much extra time to stop by here and say hello. @jim hitchcock

Doing “the white boy” since 1967.

One more dancing episode comes to mind.

Three years ago we were in Austin Texas. We were looking for a place to eat, and my wife was going through some brochure on the music and restaurants on the infamous 6th street. We had my 16 year old son who we had to drag on vacation with us, and my 18 year old daughter. Nathalie found this Irish bar/restaurant called Riley’s that said they had this harpist, (Kristen Gibbs), who played contemporary music with her band. Now bear in mind, we had planned on getting something to eat and calling it an early night. (I love Lennon’s saying, “Life is what happens to you when you are making other plans.”)

At any rate, we had dinner and were about to pack it in when the band started playing. They opened with Bob Marley’s “One Love”, then “Dock of the Bay,” and then Wooly Bully” By this point the band, Gibbs on vocals and harpist extraordinaire, a drummer and bass player who had a gray pony tail down to his derriere, had our full attention. They were tremendous. The place was fairly crowded, and by the end of the third song everyone was chair dancing, with the exception of my son who was bound and determined to be miserable that evening. (he like totally succeeded)

When they started playing Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” I asked my wife and daughter both to dance with me. They shook their head violently from side to side. But the band was nailing “Thriller,” so I just got up and started dancing with myself. I began to throw it down, Soul Train style. It seemed everyone in Riley’s was laughing at me and my wife and daughter were filming/sending text pictures off to friends.

It didn’t matter to me – the groove was just to good. After about 30 seconds, this lady comes up and starts dancing with me. Before you know it, the dance floor was packed! we went over to the table of the lady who rescued me, and had a time of it that night. It was after midnight when we left – and we were just about out the door at 9pm.

When my son came home for spring Break two weeks ago, we somehow got on the subject of that evening. Greg says, “I wasn’t too fun to be around that vacation, was I?” Had something to do with that love thing. Oh, what a woman can do to your soul!

He should have took Zorba the Greek’s advice and just danced.

    Jorma,
Please enlighten us with the story behind the legendary River Of Time guitar. I was fortunate to get a good look at it and hear you play it, the night you received it a Bethlehem, PA. My pal Andy even got to play it.

I know it was a custom made gift with beautiful inlay honoring the milestones and highlights. It has some old roots combined with modern master-craftsmanship. I wish I could have heard old George Edward put in through it’s paces. Be well. See ya soon.

The River Of Time Guitar was built by Bud Divens with able assistance from Tracy Cox who did the magnificent inlays. It sports walnut sides and back and the top is a piece of salvaged redwood from a California mill that last produced wood in the 1870’s. This is a magnificent instrument and we certainly don’t have to worry about the top aging!

      Thanks for asking…

Does that mean Myron Hart The Second? Wow Jorma! Nothing more appropriately evocative to distinguish the great nobleness of soul Myron frees in the action potential of his scrupulous functions. Love Myron!
To match “ rich l “ abt dancing to the drummer ‘s beat, Carolina Kostner chose to dance the Ladies Short Program at the World Figure Skating Championships now on in Helsinki, to the sound of God of Thunder by Kitaro, Bonzo’s Montreux by John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), whereas Carolina’s Ladies Free Skating was a thrilling ‘Nisi Dominus (Cum Dederit)’ by Antonio Vivaldi.
To match Jorma’s enlivening refrain ‘life is good’.
Always Thanks for the opportunity Jorma!

Living in the moment, Trail of the Buffalo and Come back Baby we’re just a few highlights from a show that had many. Jorma You were superb all night long hitting the perfect spots and I loved the casual impromptu format. Looking forward to the next time. You left Jimmy Crack Corn off the set list.

Great pictures! I especially like the one with Mia and then the three ol’ wizened troubadours. Truck on!

While listening to The Stars in my Crown CD this week, a thought came to me. While immensely enjoying Living in the Moment, I was envisioning myself doing ballet to that song. I’ve never had any formal dance instruction, so it would be a challenge. Most of my dancing comes from focusing in on the drummer.

I picked up that technique at our 8th grade school dance. I was a wall flower and three of my mates dragged me into the boys bathroom, and I empathize the word drag.

Rick Morales, a 200# Puerto Rican (think Barry white as far as the soulness goes), says “Watch me. I’m going to teach you how to dance.” Thank the Good Lord there were no cell phones back then. But I’ll never forget his advice, “just listen to the drums.”

At any rate, does wanting to dance ballet style to Living In The Moment make me weird?
