Uncle Charles Pond

Uncle Charles Pond

Drone Shot By Jorma Kaukonen

It’s been almost a decade since Uncle Charles has been gone. He was a wonderful neighbor and an amazing man. It is said that when he was a kid he farmed the land where the Fur Peace Ranch is with mules. He wound up living most of his life in Florida but he always kept the hilltop property next to ours. ‘Jorma, I’ve got a ten thousand dollar house with a million dollar view,’ he used to say. We were always welcome to fish his little pond and here it is today seen from the air.

The forest always welcomes...

The forest always welcomes...

This was a mere couple of days ago… Eastern Standard Time is here and the leaves are now mostly gone.

Time is flying by these days. It seems as if yesterday was Izze’s first day at Middle School and now the Thanksgiving vacation is upon us and she is already looking forward to the Christmas Holidays. I am working on rewrites on my book and rhythm of reading through it over and over again is no longer intimidating. We are looking at mid 2018 for it’s release and the attendant book tour.

Jack Casady
will be rolling in this week as will Steve Kimock. Justin Guip will be driving in for the Electric Tuna Show with Kimock this weekend. What a way to wrap up the 20th season at the FPR. What a way to end the 2017 Season down here in Meigs County.

Tomorrow is election day here in Miegs County and there are a number of important issues that must be voted on. I will be at the polls bright and early so that in some small way my voice can be heard. In this time of people running their mouths incessantly I have elected to stay mostly quiet. So many of today’s discussions are like trying to teach a pig to dance. It’s frustrating for you… and it pisses off the pig.

There was a major storm in Southeast Ohio last night and with secondary road flooding Athens Schools are on a two hour delay today. Poor Izze’s heart is broken… a shorter school day. Tomorrow is no school also as teachers prepare grades. We didn’t get days off when I was a kid. Of course, she’s at school at 0730 and done by 1430. We didn’t have hours like that when I was a kid either… but so it goes.

The road out of the Ranch.

The road out of the Ranch.

So it goes indeed… time to walk Maverick through last night’s mud.

‘I have a $10,000 house with a million dollar view.” I won’t soon be forgetting that wonderful quip.

In the town I live in, sunsets seemed to be funneled down to a point about 2 miles down the main road. They flat out make you stop what you are doing and stare into such beauty. One day, my friend Jeff was commenting on a picture my former spouse posted on face book. It was one of those spectacular photo’s from the Olympic Mountains near Port Angeles, Wa.

I tried to describe the beauty I saw at the end of the street in Homewood that day, to try and steer Jeff to the beauty right under our own feet. He laughed at the comparison and said, “I don’t know what you are on, but I want some.”

And now our town has all these goofy trees exploding with color. Again, you just want to stop and take pictures – but they never quite do justice to seeing such beauty first hand.

Praying for the people in Sutherland Springs. Each day is a blessing, eh?

Now I believe it! You are really writing a book. I’ve been to over 100 Hot Tuna shows – most of them electrified and backstage. A majority of them between 1973-1980. The Wild Years. And you’re still going strong in 2017. It’s been an incredible experience. Jorma, I truly enjoy your songs, lyrics and music – my favorite HT song is Sea Child. I am deeply grateful for all you’ve done for us over the years. So glad I’ve been blessed to be following a true American musical legend for so long. I can’t wait to read your new book. See you in Huntington, LI next month.

Nice photos and good thoughts, Jorma.
Up early tomorrow to vote. Everybody do their part.
Out to JFK right after, where I hear that the security is on max. A good thing and well
    worth the delays.

Dig yourself a nice pond on the ranch and stock it with largemouth bass and sunnies. In a few years you can spend days catching leaping lunker largemouth. Practice bass fishing in your own yard! paradise

Anybody still bragging about being backstage, 1973-1980 — there without any good reason/purpose, not working with Jorma nor a family member: pathetic.

The best thing that ever happened, for Jorma, was when Vanessa shut that down.

Jorma: The above woman keeps harassing me on your blog. I did nothing to upset her but she came back at me. Then she wonders why so many people on this blog don’t like her antics. She calls me “pathetic” for following Hot Tuna. They are some of the best years of my life. I guess all HT fans are pathetic. How many HT concerts has she been to? She thinks we are interested in her itinerary for her life. She got no idea what being a Tuna fan is. She is too full of herself with a big ego. If she was a fan she would know that 1980 is when HT took a respite from touring. It had nothing to do with Vanessa. Sad.

Thriving on confrontation, and then wondering why it occurs. This is one very disturbed………I don’t know what one would label it as.

Man I wish I could have been back stage during those years..Saw many HT shows then..Turns out I work in NY film biz and my local used to run the stage crew at the Palladium. Heard some good stories through the years. Not some I would want to share here, its a family show..LOL Also one stagehand friend said he used to compare tattoos with Jorma..Only if I had known those guys then..Saw so many shows there and not only HT..To bad it became a disco and now its NYU housing..

Guys/Gals – Let’s enjoy this discussion site by embracing and reveling in all things Tuna. Forget the personal banter, which unfortunately mirrors the disregard for civility which is permeating our lives in the US.

I like Sea Child too. One of my fav songs is from Papa’s album. Tune called String Jet Rock. I’d love to hear that with Larry playing Papa’s role. Oh………. how I’d love that!

  17. November 7th, 2017 at 14:14 | #17

If you’ve been to many shows ,invariably you’ll end up backstage.
I’ve always liked to be 6-10 rows back centerstage.
And we have our “Sunny Day Strut”, faces on today.

It’s the same, as always. Another off-line plan to disrupt with nonsense by the usual
    participants.
Best believe that Vanessa shut that backstage useless hangers-on thing down.
Whatever year she did it — was not a moment too soon. That don’t happen no more.

I was very lucky. I knew someone who knew someone who put me on the list. If you got on the list usually you stayed on the list. You had do something stupid – like dose Jack – to get kicked off the list. Being backstage was electric – it was very trippy. If you know what I mean. It was very psychedelic. Sunny Day Strut – great song. Come to think of it Burgers is my favorite album.

How come last time I saw Jorma perform at Westhampton Beach – Jorma got me backstage again. What a mean-spirited human being. I guess she can’t help herself.

At the risk of further cluttering JK’s inbox with this irrelevant thread, @careygeorgas and @andyk – You are spot on. To the Bickersons among us, as I’ve said previously, take it elsewhere. Please don’t spoil this for everyone else.

So glad to hear about Papa John Creach. I was luckily pushed from above or from inside, a few years ago, into a record store where I found this improbable live CD featuring Papa and released in this millennium. The song ‘Fiddlesticks’ therein, flew directly into my soul, and I became blessed and baptized with bliss. My daughter the same, actually. Notwithstanding I’m a urban old dog, I keep the countryside in my mind as constant background, and that song opened for me an idyllic scenery, marvelous gift that I soon repaid with a couple of lines. Thanks for the opportunity Jorma!

    Rustic Peace
Fine weather or bad that it might be
    in the rustic peace
    it doesn’t dissimulate uneasiness

    &
    Sieves
    They’ll sift as from tomorrow
Today it swings on the rocker with all that gold so strung
the dream loose in the time
    We always called at home
    to see what was changed
in our nature made of sounding lines
    Among the buckets left around
the drake too pushed by the days
    will cluck its own waxbill
so freeing through the close-mesh net its sneeze

I was sad to hear that Meigs Co. voted down a levy for a new jail. Now, I know the last thing this world needs is a new jail, but Meigs’ jail is so old it only holds five at a time. The new facility would have had space for rehab, which is sorely needed in this area. Sorry, also, that the big drug companies got Issue 2 voted down. NO REGULATION for their price schemes seems to be the order of the day.
Glad I’ve got a Tuna tape to listen to today while drying out my boat from yesterday’s rainy visit to one of my favorite fishing lakes – Salt Fork! m

So that is reason why the johno brags he was invited to backstage by jorma? And because of that invitation the johno continue to think he is in charge to control people on here especially Barbara? Is this a revelation? ( new word I just learned)?

The last time I saw electric Tuna with Steve Kimock was at the Wellmont theatre in Montclair in 2012? Kimock opened with a set and then sat in on Funky #7 . And they had Bob Steeler sitting in on additional drums also. Two drummers and Steve Kimock on Funky # 7. It was awesome. The walls were shaking.
A hot June night. Super Jam!

What part of the following did you not understand?

“Share your opinions, agree or disagree with me and others as you see fit but try to do it with some class. If someone’s presence offends you, you don’t have to respond to them.”

I’m tellin’ ya, what I got out of that “Another County…” post was that our host is not going to suffer our petty disagreements and crass remarks much longer. Remember, we’re doing all this on his nickel, and it’s his morning coffee that we’re tampering with. I really enjoy reading what Jorma writes, and being able to respond to his experiences as I relate to them. I’d hate to see it go. Please heed what the man said.

    Amen Carey.
My last words for those who appear angry. If you don’t have something nice to say, turn the other cheek and shut the f’up. This is a Tuna discussion forum not a vehicle to advance personal attacks, regardless of their justification or not.

Second time I’ve seen you refer to your book; hope it’s out on time, can’t wait to read it. Saw you & the Airplane several times in SF in the 60s and you and Jack here in Maui a couple of years ago. Good stuff across the years. Cheers mate.

That would be nice Carey but Barbara and I have ignored them many times past years they do not lose interest. So we both say to you because Barbara is now away out of country for work, to please have your free opinion. We have our own experience here it was not good. I was bullied constant, I finally leave here. Barbara be ok to be told by jorma to leave here. But recent johno and his bully boys post many comments against Barbara, especially johno calling Barbara ” big fat boob”. You reply by ask him if he likes the small boobs? He comment what are you talking about? You reply you just make a joke and apologize to him. Barbara doesn’t call you out on that she doesn’t quote you or complain. Be consistent or just don’t blame Barbara for the problems here.
