Saturday morning at our place

Saturday morning at our place

Foto by Jorma Kaukonen

Well here it is Saturday morning and indeed… it is a new day. Had a lovely morning walk with Percy, our manly Chihuahua and Maverick, the Big Guy, walked himself. A new day today, as it is every day. Took a few steps back before moving forward, some outstanding early morning breaths in the frosty 36 degree weather. Moving right along indeed. My David Flammang J-35 will get the call to serve tonight although I will have two old friends on stage with me for inspirations. You will see my 1958 J-35… the guitar that my musical identity sprung from and my 1936 Gibson Advanced Jumbo. (Well, this one was made in 1997) This is the guitar I cut Blue Country Heart with. Never had electronics… never will. Anyway… I’m fired up.

There are still many things in life to look forward to. This may be a small one, but I’ll take the win.

Have a great day all, and see you tonight on the stream.

Here’s the link again. Be there or be square.

Jorma, thank you so much for your Saturday night YouTube show. You made myself and my wife so happy! Our hearts were full again, with all that’s going on we really needed something and lo and behold it was you playing in our living room is what we needed!
We love you and your family
    Eternally grateful

Thanks for the free show Jorma and as someone said on the youtube chat last night, the free lesson!!

I picked up a subtle but crucial nuance in Blood Stained/Strained Banders/Good Shepherd and the way you do it. The lesson was the very impt hammer-on, (2 notes for one hit) from the B note on the A string to the C note on the A string and conversely, on the B string, the decend from the c note on the 1st fret B string fret to the open B string. Makes a world of difference… Those 2 different moves sort of talk back to each other. Makes for easy listening, a conversation type feel… Real sweet, melodic and a person can slowly dance to it.

Thanks Jorma. I am sure Vanessa is washing the delivery boxes, bags, plastics and everything in them that are coming to the front door.

Take your Vit D folks….helps with the lungs.. magnesium and Vit C are staples too..

All will be well. Be not afraid and ask for wisdom.

If you are indeed doing more of these, how about a split screen of you & Jack playing together aa the ultimate social distancing. Looks like Jack is up for this. I was fretful Jack would fall off that high perch but as usual he made everything look easy. Thanks for doing this. Exactly one year ago we were watching you live from Levon Helm studios…strange circumstance indeed

Of course he’s up for that. That’s my boy! That said, there is a time lag to deal with… a substantial one. We’re working on it brother. Thanks for your comment.

    Jorma/Vanessa,

Thank you both for putting together the free live stream show from your home. Your music last night was such a nice break/escape from the unfortunate situation we are dealing with. Your music certainly helped clear my mind, for a bit and I sincerely thank you for that.

Thank you again and stay safe.

Great performance, Jorma, and a fantastic gift to the fans! I agree with the person above who said that you make it look easy. Maybe there should be a disclaimer at the bottom of the screen that says “Don’t try this at home.”

Was it just me, or were Jorma, Vanessa, Myron and Izze able to bring some peace and tranquility to our harried lives last night? Like many on this blog, I’ve seen Hot tuna many times. (and hopefully many more)

But last night was absolutely beyond special. It was the safety of a beaming lighthouse amidst the stormy seas. I think I had a smile on my face for an hour and 15 minutes – non stop. I think Satchmo would have mentioned something about last night in his “But I say to myself, what a wonderful world.” I am curious why it wasn’t a little longer..just a taste of Jorma is never enough.

The video and sound was impeccable. And once in awhile, the camera would zero in on Jorma’s eyes. A real close up. Now I’m not coming on to you Jorma, but they were warm soft, and caring – it appeared you were talking to Vanessa on those close ups. I’ve heard it said that the eyes are the window to the soul. Thanks for a glimpse into yours last night.

    “When you’re lying awake
    and feel your body shake
C’mon girl don’t let your spirit break
When the life your in, is more than you can take
Got to once more look away
    if living for today
    don’t satisfy your sensual pleasures
    once more look away
    And follow with your heart
as the waves come crashing miles apart

J-dawg, a lot of hearts were touched last night. Every song was special, but you ht Heart Temporary out the park!

Got a good deal on a Bose 500 audio thingy, ordered online from Best Buy, curbside pickup at a location near me, paired it up with my TV Bluetooth, and voila – virtual reality as good as it gets right from the comfort of my easy chair. Linda and I thought the set list perfect, the performance sublime. If the heart is true, joy will follow. Thanks.

Stairs are an effort for my 88 year old White Rabbit so I went downstairs and watched 4 songs on her I-Phone with her because I wanted to show her who and what I was periodically leaving her alone to go see in concert…She was impressed by Jorma’s ability at his age…She’s from above the Arctic Circle in Norway so I mentioned Jorma was Finnish and a “Nord Man” and just by serendipity Jorma sang something about darkness of the winter in the northland just as I said it…Women navigate by families and wives so I had to fill in all the details of Jorma’s female relationships and children etc…Good show…Good crisp guitar tones on my Bose computer speakers…

Your music brings me so much joy and healing. Thank you, Jorma, for being there. I was hoping that you might do this.

Crappy, I don’t know you from Adam, but the description of your encounter with the lawnmower brought visions of Alvin Straight’s solution in the movie The Straight Story. Had to smile.

First, thanks for the tips on getting my lawn mower started. I had a serious talk with it this morning (threatened to disown it) and dosed it with some starter fluid and it fired right up in 2 pulls. The old Toro is 17 yrs old and I guess I’ll keep it another year. Really enjoy Zimmy’s 17 min new/old opus “Murder Most Foul.” I am guessing he recorded it in 2013 as he makes a reference to JFK assassination as 50 years ago. Also, be sure to check out Ana Popovic’s FB page. She’s a great guitarist..and if I recall correctly sat in with HT in Canton a few years ago. She has taken to doing some family jam covers with her 2 young kids…so far a John Mayer tune, a Revivalist tune, and my favorite SW/BF’s “Can’t Find My Way Home.” Fun stuff! Looking forward to seeing/hearing the Captain at the helm of the mighty FPR tonight. Hey to Hurl, Myron, and the FPR crew!

    So…

I took two frozen pieces of tuna out of the freezer for dinner tonight for my son and I. i’m sure he’s panicking and already has Chipolte on his speed dial…just in case!

Are there any chefs out there in Tuna land that could give me a good recipe for cooking them. It has to be simple and assume I have no clue when it comes to cooking something exotic like this. maybe a little Asian flavoring?

Walks are good for the soul. While walking through the hood two days ago, I chanced upon an old high school friend and his wife. We talked to each other from opposite sides of the street for a good bit. I finished by saying “There are probably going to be a lot of babies about 9 months down the road making their appearance – what with the shelter in place decries. (remember when that used to be called “stay at home?!” hopefully, no one will name their baby Covid.

At any rate, Mark shouted back across the street, “Babies or divorces!” men, do you want to score big with the little lady. Get a bucket with some hot water and disinfectant and start scrubbing the walls in “her” house.

    I’ll not be square.

That little niggling whiner fired his gun with his powder wet, and Mama bear moved in for a most tasteful kill. I’m guessing Papa bear would have looked more like the bear in The Revenant.

I have no requests tonight. All songs will be special. You’re a helluva good guy.
