Hot Licks, Laurence Juber & Bill Kirchen

fpr 0
A number of wondrous things happened at the Fur Peace Ranch this weekend. Firstly, it was great getting back in the saddle to teach again… it’s been a couple of weeks. My old bud Bill Kirchen was back in town and that’s always a treat. Laurence Juber was here making his first trip to the Fur Peace Ranch and this was something we had been looking forward to for a long time. Add to this the concert Saturday night at the Fur Peace Station with Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks and you have the makings of a perfect weekend.

Saturday night Dan and his merry band of guys and gals blew into town and blew us all away with his two set show! For his two encores, he invited Laurence, Bill and myself to sit in and that was the frosting on the cake! Sunday after class Bill and Laurence and I got on stage and put on a little show for the campers. I went first and then Bill. You know what I look like, but here’s Bill… and anyway, I’m the photographer.

After Bill dazzled us all for a while Laurence Juber came on and treated us to about forty five minutes of stellar guitar music.

What a couple of nights… what a weekend. Great stuff!

Tomorrow, weather willing, is going to be a day for some yard work… and as always, more will be revealed.

I recall seeing a Homespun video of Lawrence Juber playing a fingerstyle version of Paul McCartney’s “Martha My Dear.” Holy smoke, the guy’s just ridiculously good!

It was great seeing Bill at the Beacon Tuna show in December. I always that that CC & LPA was a fantastic band that was way ahead of its time. Boy, they could play it all and were a helluva lot of fun.

Bill K is definitley on my “Workshops I MUST do at Fur Peace Ranch” list.

Saw him do a free gig at Carrboro, NC 4th of July celebration a couple of years ago and was just AMAZED at his talent…Hot Rod Lincoln blew the doors off the place (which is pretty tough to do at an outdoor gig)….Really Nice guy to boot…got to chat with him a minute after the gig

ALL of the talent at Fur Peach Ranch is ALLways the best that can be found!! And thanks for THAT!!!

Hope you got the lawn cut yesterday

LJ is something else! I’ve met him a couple of times and he is a real nice guy. At a Martin Guitar forum get-together a few years ago, he came and played a small concert, then had a workshop. Then he jammed with everyone until all hours of the night. He hardly ever uses standard tuning and really pushes the limits in his playing. Great stuff. Ask him about his 007th chord sometime..
