Yeah, so Hurl and I met up in Grandview, Ohio last night at Natalie’s for a live stream together. Even though we have played together so much over the past couple of years this was actually our first ‘gig’ together outside of the Fur Peace Ranch. Natailie’s room in Grandview is a perfect small room for both acoustic and electric music. Jack and I did a show there back in November when Ohio still permitted socially distant audiences and needless to say, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Obviously a show with me and Hurl is a different animal than Jack and myself but even with no audience present, the room was magic. Here is our set list:

Jorma Kaukonen & John Hurlbut #1, 2021

So here it is 2021. I was listening to Jefferson Airplane We Can Be Together while I was doing my morning chores and after all these years I have to say, what a track! Sad to say Nicky Hopkins is not still alive to play with. Time spares no one. Now I realize a half a century has passed since this tune was penned and played and some of the thoughts seem sophomoric in the light of history, but as my grandmother Vera said in an interview in 1950, ‘It is not a bad thing to be audacious when you are young!’ Paraphrasing Nana a bit, but it went something like that. The passions of youth are, well, the passions of youth. Anyway, what a great track.

Anyway…

Time is indeed marching on… thank goodness. We’ll be here tonight for #34.

Join us and stay well!

(CNN)The FBI has received information indicating “armed protests” are being planned at all 50 state capitols and the US Capitol in Washington, DC in the days leading up to President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20, according to an internal bulletin obtained by CNN.

“Armed protests are being planned at all 50 state capitols from 16 January through at least 20 January, and at the US Capitol from 17 January through 20 January,” it says.

“Walking the streets of that old fair city’s like being in another land.” How true. Take great care, m

    Hi Jorma:
1)Thanks so much to you and the entire crew for #34, and for keeping me sane (or at least as sane as I ever manage to be).
2)You prompted me to pull out the old vinyl of “Volunteers” and there sure is a whole heck of a lot of great rock guitar playing on that album. (Fellow old-timers: flashbacks guaranteed.)
3)What’s the story behind “A Song for All Seasons”? Did Spencer Dryden just spring that on you guys one day?

and someone sets off a firecracker in front of Jerry. Jerry instantly winds the song down and wraps it up. Show over.

Grace soars on We Can Be Together as does the whole band . If we aren’t careful here rumors will start flying about Grace ,Jack and Jorma getting together and playing some music. As for Nicky Hopkins…….Tower Theatre in Philadelphia Jerry Garcia Band and the music is soaring as high and intense as it can get during Edward The Mad Shirt Grinder

Nothing “sophomoric” about it. It was of its times, and much of it still rings true. And the song it leads into wasn’t bad either.

We Can Be Together was the definitive Jefferson Airplane song.
    Nothing else can touch it.

I’m 66 years old. Volunteers was one of the first albums I ever bought. I played it until the groves started turning white. “We Can Be Together” is indeed a great song. Appropriate. The answer is in the title.

I love Jorma’s guitar work on We Can Be Together. A fabulous song indeed.

Is there a way to find last night’s show on line?

‘We Can Be Together’ has the feel of Grace getting casual with the 60’s and their radical politics…Courting the muse with feminine harmonies like a freaky lady liberty…That’s why I love Grace besides her being really cute & pretty…Good to see Jorma recognizing his epic Airplane stuff…

Jorma and Hurl , what a setlist that is ! When things settle down and We Can Be Together again in a live setting I would very much like to hear you two guys do a show. As for the song, I think Rob said it all……Stay safe and continue to enjoy the blessings that are bestowed on us each and every day.

It is an outstanding song! I can’t get enough of it: The lyrics, the music, the lead guitar, the harmonies, and most of all the vibe that perfectly captures the time. I wish that “youth” were still as passionate in a such a constructive way. I guess if it were written today, it would be something like “We Can Friend Each Other”.
