Thursday, July 14, 2005 2135 Annapolis, Maryland

I got to spend two days with my kid and got a lot of in room work done. It was nice to be able to spend more than one day in the same place... and laundry, of course. We're leaving for Asbury Park first thing in the morning. Back to the grind...

Saturday, July 16, 0708 Holtsville, New York

The gig at the Stone Pony Landing yesterday in Asbury Park with Railroad Earth rocked. It was the first time I had the please of actually catching Earth's set and I enjoyed it.

Sunday, July 17 2005 0637 Holtsville, New York

A nice outdoor festival yesterday... the weather held out and all things were good. It was such a treat to hear Sam Bush and his friends again...it's been a while, since the Stuart Opera House in Nelsonville last hear. Sam's CD, 'King Of My World' has been in heavy rotation in my truck for a about a year now. I love his music!

We went on at 2100 sharp. It was hot and muggy.. the way it's meant to be on the East Coast this time of year. Towards the end of our set, a mist danced in towards the stage... little droplets of moisture floating in towars the stage like airborne crystals. Quite the sight. Here is our set list:

The gig at the Church was another sold out show... two words we love to hear. We did one two hour plus set and here is the set list:

Tuesday, July 26, 2005 2252 Northampton, Massachusetts

An evening off here in Northampton last night and a good walk this morning to town. I love Northampton... and I love the Iron Horse. While we were setting up I got a chance to go next door to the Blue Note vintage instrument shop and chew the fat while I looked around. Then some of my family on my Father's side came to talk before the show. Uncle Art is almost 90 years old... the last one of my Father's generation. What a guy! Talking to Art and his family was a great way to start out the evening. Speaking of which, here is our set list:

We had two powerful sets this evening. Great sound, great audience, and truth be told, we played great. Tomorrow will be a long day at the cruise in NYC so it's off to bed.

Thursday, July 28, 2005 1153 Quakertown, Pennsylvania

Yesterday we had two sold out shows for the Blues Cruise. You load your gear on the ship in the shadow of the Intrepid and the New York Skyline. Powerful symbols. New York, in my humble opinion, the greatest city in the world! I remember driving into the City with Vanessa a couple days after 9/11 to attend a memorial for a friend of ours who fell with the towers. As we approached the Lincoln Tunnel back then, the skyline still glowed with an eerie blue light and smoke was still rising. I cannot look at that skyline today without feeling the loss. It will change, it may be better or not, but it will never be the same. The indomitable spirit of most Americans in general and New Yorkers in particular resounds with me today. God bless this land of ours!

Having written this paragraph in an effort to put my reality in perspective I do have a couple of observations vis a vis last night on the cruise. Whenever something irritates me my lovely wife, who spots things that are about to issue from me mouth would caution, 'Don't sound like you're whining!' Good advice... I'll try to take it.

After the first show a friend asked me with a smile on her face, 'That was a great show, how did you like it?' I could have just smiled as I often do and said, 'Oh it was great,' and thanked her. I didn't this time. I told her that is was a very difficult set for me. A small but extremely vocal segment of the audience made so much noise talking and yelling to each other that I could hear them better than I could hear Jack and Barry and they were right next to me. I had to wonder why someone would pay good money to see and hopefully hear a show and then listen only to themselves. Heck, you can do that at home and have an argument at the same time and pay nothing except for ulcer remedies. Hey look, I know the deal. Ultimately we're supposed to be entertainers and if the audience is entertained and our check clears so be it... but there's more for me. I had to radically change my set list on the fly and not do any of the really delicate pieces I wanted to do. I simply wouldn't have been able to hear what I was doing. Oh well... poor me.

By the time we started the second show, I was able to drop the 'poor me' stance and was back with the program. For some reason, the second audience was a little more reserved than the first... a little. Anyway, the emotional fog cleared and I felt we nailed the second show. As we were playing I looked out over the port side and there was the Statue Of Liberty! Boy that sure put it in perspective! Don't sweat the small stuff I'm always telling anyone who foolishly wants to listen. In that moment I was able to do it myself. Living in a free land... making a living at a profession I love... hey, there isn't even any small stuff with that in mind. New York, you know I love you even if you like to talk... which by the grace of G_d we get to do in this country. Amen. I humorously thought, 'When we come back with the electric band it could be different.'

Indeed... the show must go on. Thanks for listening, y'all!

A fine time had by all. We're off to Floyd County Virginia tomorrow early so it's off to bed now.

Saturday, July 30, 2005 0936 Christiansburg, Virginia

We left Quakertown yesterday morning and seven and a half hours later here we were in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains at Christiansburg. Where the hotel is could be Strip Mall Anywhere U.S.A. That's fine for us since we're confined to where the bus can go, but I just have a feeling that not far from here is some truly wonderful country.

We're going to be heading down to the Floydfest in an hour or so I won't be able to get back on line until I get into Annapolis tomorrow morning sometime.

I'm looking forward to some real fun today

Sunday, July 31, 0444 Annapolis, Maryland

Indeed, were at Floydfest yesterday. Up there off the Blue Ridge Parkway, it just doesn't get much prettier... or better. The rain broke and a heavy fog came in over the mountains as we started to play. It was like being in Transylvania. We had a well received set... and here it is:
