More Than Thirty Years At The Casa Nueva In Athens, Ohio

Let’s start off with a photo.

Here I am with a gift card from the Owner/Employees that I received today at breakfast at the Casa Nueva  in town.

I first ate at the Casa Nueva on West State Street over thirty years ago. The Casa is a one of a kind dining experience in the Ohio River Valley, and a good one. The food is all locally sourced, it is worker owned and well… it could only happen ...

The extended Kaukonen Family… Jorma, Zach, Jenny, Vanessa, Sam, Ginger, Montana and Izze.

Vanessa and Ginger spent Wednesday night at the Ranch and the preparations were legion. We had lobster mac and cheese, spiral cut ham and of course… the bird. We also had home made corn pudding, pumpkin chile and well… lots and lots of delicious goodies not the least of which was a magnificent charcuterie board!

it was a red sky…

And the cold wind and rain followed just like they said it would. Truly, it’s a month or so short of winter but, well let’s just say I don’t see a motorcycle ride in the near future. I’m already creating music scenarios for the West Coast gigs and Denver and really looking forward to the rehearsals and the shows. Hurlbut and I get together two to three times a week to keep ...

A neighborly visit to the River Of Time Boutique & Gallery

We are thrilled as Vanessa’s River Of Time finds its space in the Athens community. It has definitely found its home! Anyway Johnny and I rehearsed seriously since our show at the Fur Peace Station and we kept our new songs in the rotation.

John and myself rehearsing in the Gallery surrounded by original Fillmore Posters that my mother saved a lifetime ago. Thanks Mom!

Anyway, here’s today’s ...

The Fur Peace Station from the air by Jorma Kaukonen

It was a beautiful fall day for the last gig at the Fur Peace Station featuring John Hurlbut and myself. We had really been looking forward to this one although it was a little bittersweet being the last show of 2023 at the Ranch. Time is slipping through our fingers at an alarming rate and each moment, good or bad, is worth remembering.

More from Jorma & his drone

Walking To Byzantium

The peak foliage has passed but there are still hardy stragglers clinging to the branches. Some of the trees are not quite ready to relinquish their leaves and join their denuded brothers and sisters in anticipation of the coming winter. Another year is slipping through our fingers.

I am not used to being home so much and the lack of scripted organization that being on the road requires sometimes leaves me at loose ends. It is an interesting place to ...

Fair winds & following seas sister!

I’m sitting here at the kitchen table. Our daughter, who is now out of the house and living in town has come over to visit mom and dad. She has moved from the table to the spinet piano we bought her some years ago. She is playing a song she is writing and singing softly to herself. As I listen to her beautiful voice chase the keys Vanessa gasps from across the ...

The view from the porch

Saturday last Electric Hot Tuna played it’s final East Coast (more or less) gig at the Fur Peace Ranch. Our friends truly came from the four corners of the earth to join us for this show. We are a destination, not a way point and I am more than grateful that they took the trouble to join us in moderately remote Darwin, Ohio.

Fall is indeed more than a metaphor for me today. ...

Docking at Suwanee Music Park

We had been looking forward to this gig. Playing at Suwanee Music Park has always been fun over the years and this was to be no exception! There were all sorts of friends there to be reconnected with not the least of which was Jim Lauderdale and Verlon Thompson. It was to be a great day!
