Every time I’m in the D.C. metro area, if I have time I pay my respects at the WW I, WW II, Korean War and Vietnam memorials. My father and his two brother were WW II vets. My Uncle Tarmo’s flag resides with honor in our living room. He rests in the National Cemetery in Los Angeles. My Dad and Uncle Pen are both in the Inglewood cemetery in LA next to Mom and Ida and Jaako Kaukonen.
For the first time I will be riding to DC with my buddy Jerry. We’re going to pick up my son Zach after school Friday and we’re going to spend the weekend seeing those sights I mentioned and on Sunday we’ll ride in Rolling Thunder. Whether one served or not, the Vietnam War most definitely defined my generation. Over a third of the vets are gone now and I honor them all.
I will be trying to keep my blog going while away but pictures will have to wait until I get home.
Memorial Day… thanks to all who have served, do serve and will serve!

Thank you , Jorma, for bringing our heads and hearts to remember those who fought to preserve our freedom. We all owe them.
The Vietnam war defined our generation. In retrospect, at a great loss of life, we were able to speak against bad foreign policy and find a more humanistic and sustaining voice. Special thanks to those who served there, your efforts are appreciated. You were betrayed by the mission/politicians.

Jorma, my Dad was in Pearl Harbor during WWII when the japs attacked. It was early Sunday morning when all hell broke loose. On the way back he traveled all the way back from Hawaii to San Francisco on an flat bottom open air troop carrier. He never went on a boat again. He died 7 years ago – but every Memorial Day he would put on his old Army uniform. A true old soldier.

Nice ride….I also come from a family who served our great country. My dad trained the cadets at West Point in WWII, and both my brothers served, one in Korea and the other right after the Vietnam war so we were raised to always remember. This Memorial Day seems to mean something more to me because my son is now serving and my soon to be son-in-law just graduated boot camp so our flag will be flying loud and proud at my house this weekend. Enjoy your time with your son and have a safe ride.

My cousin, Donald Mollicone , served In Vietnam and was killed on Xmas Day
In 1963, one of the earliest casualties of the Vietnam war.
Memorial Day is a beautiful day of remembrance!

Good for you Jorma. Have a nice run and enjoy your time with your son Zach. My dad served in Korea and most of that generation is now gone as is my dad. He passed from this earth four years ago this July. I miss him so. It was dad who taught me that Memorial Day is not really a holiday but a day of rememberence, reflection and gratitude .
