Well, last night we hosted a Psylodelic Event at the Fur Peace Station. We were showing Mary Works great film Rocking At The Red Dog. It was indeed the dawn of psychodelic music and it’s a must see for anyone interested in that vibrant period of American History.

We had Dan Hicks here and we sat in the audience and watched the film together. Truly great stuff! Then we had a Q and A with our own Joh Hurlbut as a moderator which wound up lasting almost an hour and then Dan and I threw down a little set together.

Big storms today in Meigs... direcho winds and tornados

So we headed over to the Fur Peace Ranch today to get ready for my participation in the Second Annual Guitar Mash held at the City Winery in New York City. Now I would have liked to have been there in person, but I was here with Dan last night so we did it by Skype and… it worked. I led the gang in Come Back Baby and Folsom Prison Blues. Good times!

I hear that train a coming...

I hear that train a coming...

Hello, New York!!!!!

Hello, New York!!!!!

Good stuff and a fun weekend. Now we have some serious storm coming in tonight so I’ve got to get my generator ready just in case. I put the plow blade on my tractor day before yesterday so that should endure that it will not snow. We’ll see. If I get the generator out, maybe the winds will pass too.

Great weekend… more will be revealed!

Barbara, my name is John Millikin and I am the nephew of Chesley Millikin who you mentioned in your post. I am currently doing some fairly extensive family research and would really appreciate any insights from somebody who knew Chesley. Could I contact you for some information about my uncle? Thanks. That’s good, HFT!
Even if H.T. is the only band you love:
I’m sure you read books, have a hobby, and know about at least an era of American history, enjoy Art and museums.
You’ve been to museums, or at least you will, next year, pre-Tuna show.
Meanwhile, you can meet John B and whoever else is going to Malachy’s before the show. Enjoy!@Joe in DC

Ray is a sweet, sensitive man.
Paul Shaffer named his daughter, Victoria, after that song title.
There is a very tight circle of dedicated Kinks fans in the NYC area.
Ray enjoyed hanging out with them and they were the fans who waited for him, over at Malachy’s.

I did the fan round-up, while on the road. Was permitted to tell those fans where we would be having dinner after the show — and there they would be, waiting.

Enjoy it all: different musicians playing different music.
If you ever meet them, they are happy to hear that you are: “a big fan”, that you “LOVE” him/her/them… but if you are an interesting individual, reading books, seeing films, going to museums, enjoying Art, know about history; you will have something to have a conversation about with them.

“Ooops..” had some finger stutter there and hit the wrong key! @Jorma– my fathers first cousin was a bomber pilot in WWII were he became MIA,, never to be found. Evidently there were no survivors from that mission– although a pix does exist of the crew with my cousin in the photo. Thanks for sharing that part of veteran history–
Well OK folks,, ‘Time for me to part..’ for now anyhow. Have a wicked good time in the city!!!

@John B –I sure wish I’d be seeing everyone in NYC over the wk-end myself, however, I’m dealing with some bone on bone issues on my knee currently and don’t think I would be able to keep up with the pace of mobility as I once was able to a few years past! I will so look forward to hearing all about the musical journey and friendship bonding as it takes on it’s own fruition of fun, laughter and song– in the company of Jorma and team Tuna!!! BTW– @Joe in D.C. and John B. (or any other)– will you be at the Birchmere gig in January?? I am determined to be there! I’m scheduling my knee procedure around that date 🙂 @Joe in D.C. ,,having the knee done @ Reston Hospital 🙂 @Jorma –your wonderful photos and writings have been most medicinal for the knee pain I’m currently having as a physical ‘hic-up’ with

I think that Malachy sold that bar some years ago.
Ray Davies had his Manhattan apartment for decades, a few blocks away on West 72nd Street. Malachy’s was his “local pub” and he often met with Kinks fans there.

Now you know some stories about that bar you are going to. Walking in with some history will make it an even better experience.
Wish I could be there, too.
    Next year, my dear.

That dive pub was owned for many years, and is named after its owner Malachy McCourt (brother of Frank McCourt. the”Angela’s Ashes” sons). Frank passed away a few years ago and the youngest McCourt brother is Alphie McCourt. Malachy has written several books and Alphie wrote a book titled: “A Long Stone’s Throw”, which I recommend for its combination of tragedy and laugh-out-loud good humor.

I met Alphie through the late, great Chesley Millikin. I’ve commented about Chesley before: He was the best friend of Charlie Watts and did A&R Record label work in London.
Then he moved to America, met The Grateful Dead (and once was their de facto manager: see Dennis MacNally’s book: “Long Strange Trip”), went on the Rolling Thunder Tour with Bob Dylan, moved to Austin and discovered Stevie Ray Vaughn. If you watch VH1 “Behind The Scenes” program on Jerry Garcia, you can see Chesley walking with Bob Dylan, into Jerry’s funeral service. @Joe in DC

I was sitting on my deck @ my country home this past summer in the evening having a beer when up the valley I see this big bird flying about tree level. It was a Bald eagle and I was about a hundred yards away, it was so quiet we heard the whoosh its wings – probably looking for a fish dinner.

I live at the shore johno . The nest we were watching was in Toms River which is close to Barnegat Bay. Good fishing grounds for them. Lately I have spotted a few of them on my way to work which is in North Brunswick. I travel the back country roads to work and that takes me right up the middle of the state. The eagle I saw yesterday was about twenty miles east of the Delaware. Around Cream Ridge . @johno

If there is no pre-show meeting-up this year, you can go to The Met, which is open late on Friday. After 5pm it’s “pay as you wish”. (which is really what you can do any day/time of the week.) Then walk across Central Park (or take the M86 or M79 bus).@Joe in DC

There’s a movie: “A Big Year” about bird-watchers who take a year off from their lives to travel around and spot and photograph the most different species of birds. It’s a competition.
Owen Wilson and Steve Martin were in that movie and I actually liked it more than I thought I would.

Are any of you folks attending the friday acoustic show meeting up for a beer or dinner pre show? I am going solo on Friday so if you have a spot in mind let me know…and when…and I will be there

  54. Comment made on November 19, 2013 by Barbara Jacobs

    I didn’t know that.
Bald eagles were endangered, how long ago was that?, because they are back and you got to see them many times. Have you ever seen more than one, at a time?@johno

  55. Comment made on November 19, 2013 by Barbara Jacobs

That was something to see, for sure.
I like to observe nature and birds of all kinds are interesting to watch.
I can tell the difference between various bird-poop:
Pigeons and seagulls have pooped on me many times. A Robin-redbreast once pooped on me:I was watching it for about 10 minutes as it was pecking around on the ground and as it flew away, it poop-bombed me. Big poop for such a small bird!
Eagle-poop must be a big mess.
Eagles were an endangered species, it seems like that was not so long ago.

You’re a lot like me: we’re “stop and smell the roses” type of people.
johno likes cloud-watching, which is something I love to do.
Watching the sun set is another.
Probably why we love art and museums.
Nature is a work of art (“and I should know, I’m an Art Lover”).

Are you near the Delaware river?
There are a couple hundred Bald Eagles in the NE most of them are in the Delaware River valley. I fish the upper Delaware and have seen dozens – once one was sitting on a branch about a couple hundred feet away. We were both fishing the same trout pool.

  57. Comment made on November 19, 2013 by John B

    @Barbara Jacobs
Couldn’t tell you Barb but I know that the numbers are on the increase and that nationwide the population is very healthy. They may have been removed from the endangered species list. I’m always watching for Red Tail hawks this time of year and occasionally an eagle will fly by. It always brightens my day to see one. Two years ago there was a nest up in Toms River just off of a busy highway that sat atop a cell phone tower. You could see the young eagles in the nest every now and then popping their heads up . After ninety minutes of waiting I put the car in gear and slowly started to drive away when out of the blue an adult eagle came swooping in with a large fish in its talons . It flew right over us and up into the nest. That was an outstanding sight.

  58. Comment made on November 19, 2013 by Barbara Jacobs

Are there a lot of eagles in New Jersey?
If you get into Manhattan early, there’s a new exhibition at The Frick:

“Vermeer, Rembrandt and Hals: Masterpieces of Dutch Painting from the Mauritshuis.” I went to see it before I left town, highly recommend it.@John B

So, you can still drive. That’s good. I know that I’m going to miss an unbelievable show. I know it and I try to accept the reality of it.
I’m finished with meetings in London and tomorrow I go to Germany.
I’m going to surprise my friend, the journalist, Uli Twelker at his house in Bavaria.

    “KNOCK, KNOCK”.
    “Who’s there?”
    “It’s me, ULI.
I think he will be home because he’s writing a book/biography of Georgie Fame.
Uli does the best interviews. During the past few years he interviewed (among others): Pete Townshend (who told him stories that I couldn’t believe he broke loose with), Larry Campbell and did a Jorma interview. (I believe that was done and published and it’s time for him to interview Hot Tuna with Jack.)
He writes for the German magazine: “Good Times”.

It’s fast and it never misses its mark.

    Thanks for that, Joe.
It was over 20 years ago and it’s in the past. There’s something about enduring pain that sticks with a person, long after it’s gone.
That concert at the Meadowlands was a real trip: I was in a wheelchair with an external fixator drilled through my leg. My back was broken, so I have metal rods, 10 inches, implanted on each side of my spine and had a spinal fusion, to fuse my lumbar discs.

Christine drove me in my wheelchair around the backstage area:
“LOOK OUT MICKEY! GET OUTTA’ THE WAY — we’re coming through!”

Having said that: You wouldn’t even know that it happened, by seeing me now.
I don’t even have a limp. Good as new, although older than then.@Joe in DC

John B – I think I remember him posting on here about that show… When I was in AK i do not remember tuna playing, but….King Cove…yeah I got out to Dutch Harbor a couple times…The Aleutians have terrible weather..hah The worst weather I experienced up there was a place called Deadhorse, AK…above the Arctic Circle…another world 4 sure… I took my son to the Beacon once like in 2011..yes

My son is a teacher in King Cove Joe . He has some incredible weather stories to tell. He has the Bering Sea on one side and the Gulf of Alaska on the other. Tuna played there a few years ago as I recall. That was before my son went up there. He came home last summer and I took him to Keswick to Tuna. It was a great show for him. @Joe in DC

Barb – sorry to hear about your past accident…really sorry.

Doug – I used to live out there in Camarillo, CA and Bakersfield, CA; actually 2 separate chapters in my life and times. Camarillo had ideal weather; very Mediterranean. Bakersfield was, well, how do I say it…terrible weather.

As for Tuna noreaster weather on Saturday…nothing to worry about..just bring a jacket. Back in the 1980’s I lived and worked in Alaska for about 7 years…now I could tell you some weather stories, worst I have ever seen….no wonder Tuna to my recollection never came to play in AK at least not when I was there….hah

Just a possibility at this point Barb. I hope not. I prefer the cold crisp air that we should have at this time of year. Regarding your history of having to deal with bad storms and airport delays while trying to get back to the city for Tuna shows it is natural that a possible nor’easter is coming together. We must get word out that you will not be attending this year and perhaps the storm won’t materialize as they often don’t or if it does it will just veer harmlessly out to sea as they often do. @Barbara Jacobs

    You’re welcome to it.
Most people I know who lived in the L.A. area have moved away: earthquakes, mudslides, wildfires; it was just too much to deal with.@doug mlyn

I’m sorry to report that concert seating upgrades in NYC venues are only available for those who are in wheelchairs. That’s an upgrade that you don’t want, unless it’s needed.

Back in 1993 after I (a pedestrian) got hit by a car in 1992 and almost died:
I was lucky enough to get to the point where I could use a wheel-chair.
My friend, Christine drove me out to a Dead concert at the Meadowlands.
We went backstage and said “Hello” and the look on Jerry’s face was of total shock:
“OH,WOW — you really did get hurt in that accident. Bear(Owsley) told me that he called you while you were in the hospital, and told me you said that you would be back at concerts within a year.”
    And, so I was.
Bear really did call me while I was in the hospital (for 3 months) as did Carlos Santana and a few other friends, at that time. I was happy to listen to music that they sent to me (on my Walkman CD player!)

“It was long ago but it seems like yesterday…”

Last year I was working in Australia and went to the place on the road where Bear drove, going out-of-control; trying not to hit a kangaroo crossing the road (the equivalent of a deer, in the USA). I put some American Beauty Roses down and thought about the old days.)

If my memory serves me well: that first Jorma show at the Winery was on a day of weather, more than a bad rainstorm — it was a Nor’Easter.
I went down to the lobby of my Condo building and my doorman advised me to stay inside: “No cabs, train service not running and bus service very slow.”
I went out into the weather, anyway. By the time I gave up and went home, I was a rain-drenched mess.
My doorman said: “So, how was the show?”.

Yes I am. I’m suggesting a seat upgrade for all concerts – esp Hot Tuna shows – sfter all us ole folk don’t hear or see as good as you yung ones. I saw ZZ Top sat. nite, I was front row – i’m still shakin and humming “Legs”. No thanks to AARP.

    @johno
Are you suggesting a Tuna concert seat upgrade for AARP card-carrying members?

She was the wife of Herman Munster. Before t.v. fame she was a movie actress.
(It’s not P.C. to refer to females who act as “actresses” They are “actors”.)

A Nor’Easter is headed for NYC? Leave early folks, drive safely and enjoy the show.@John B

Now if AARP gave us closer seat at all concerts – esp Hot Tuna shows – because my eyes and hearing is shot – maybe then I’d open one of damn mailers – see I’m pissed already.

i leave Virginia 5 am Friday for the big apple for 2 tuna shows…nor easter or no nor easter, AARP member or non AARP member…grumpy or not grumpy..its Tuna Time….

  91. Comment made on November 18, 2013 by John B

Yvonne DeCarlo ? Is that Morticia ? If you want something to get grumpy about the stage is getting set for a possible Nor’Easter Friday or Saturday. I ignore the AARP mailings but I no longer have to ask for the senior citizen discount when I go to the movies. It kind of ticks me off though that they they just assume I should get the senior discount. Does that make me a grump? @Barbara Jacobs

  92. Comment made on November 18, 2013 by Barbara Jacobs

See? — Another recipient who throws out AARP mailings.@Joe Levine

  93. Comment made on November 18, 2013 by Joe Levine

if AARP gave tuna ticket discounts I would sign up, but to date they do not so I trash all their mailers.

  94. Comment made on November 18, 2013 by Barbara Jacobs

They actually started mailing to me, while I was only in my late-forties.
By the time I turned 50 and still didn’t sign-up, I was getting mailings every-other-month. Now, I get them once-a-month. They enclose a “membership card” in the envelope. From what I read in their mailings, I can receive discounts on movie tickets and some other things that I don’t need. It’s not as though I will get a discount on MTA transit system fare — it will still cost me $2.50 to ride a NYC bus.
I’m not entitled to senior fare discount until I’m 65.

I think AARP is very wasteful with their membership finances because they send out so many unwanted mailings and “Membership cards”.
When I want to become a “member” of AARP — I will contact them.
Until then: STOP SENDING ME MAIL, AARP — I’M MIDDLE-AGED!@johno

I get really pissed off when I get those AARP mailings – now I know why i’m grumpy too!

That was a cool idea to participate via Skype, Jorma.
    Ah, modern technology.
Everything is O.K. at your home. Putting on the plow blade was good preparation.
I hear that yesterday in NYC was very foggy and then windy but today is sunny and nice there.

The first time Jorma played at City Winery, there was a big rainstorm in NYC.
Many subway platforms and tunnels were flooded and service was very limited.
I couldn’t get a cab and buses were running slowly. It would have taken me over 3 hours to get from my apartment at East 56th street and Lexington Ave., down and across town to City Winery. Larry Campbell’s mom, (the late, great Maggie)
left for the show early and got a lift downtown. She called me at home after the show and I told her about my efforts to get downtown: No train, no cabs and it would have been over 3 hours, waiting for 3 buses to get there. I said “I’m getting a jet-pack”. We laughed and it is a good memory, that resulted from my grumpy night.

(I didn’t realize that I was too young to be “grumpy”,Jorma. At what age does one officially join the Grumpsters? I’ve been getting those AARP mailings for the past 5 years. If I get an AARP card, I’m going to whip it out for those discounts.

Back in the early 1980’s Yvonne DeCarlo wrote her autobiography and she didn’t want to go out on a book tour, unless she could drive her station-wagon from city-to-city. We asked her why she didn’t want to travel by plane.
She yelled: “BECAUSE I’M OLD!!!” She was grumpy.)
