Sold out in Beacon at the Crier
On Thursday last, Myron and I hopped into my Nissan Titan and drove up to Beacon, New York for our Friday gig at the Town Crier there. I haven’t played the Town Crier since it was in Pauling, New York… and that was well over a decade ago. Barry and I hadn’t played a Jorma duo show since Fall of last year so we were looking forward to the adventure. Here is our set list:

Saturday we are in Brooklyn for a fundraiser put on by the Racoon Lodge. (That’s not a typo for Racoon… they avoid copyright infringements that way.)

This gig was a fundraiser for the Guild For Exceptional Children and was put on in the gym of Our Lady Of Perpetual Help. We couldn’t advertise this one because of sundry arrangements with promoters we work for all the time, so this was strictly word of mouth. All would have been welcome, but we had a great turnout… almso a thousand people.

Dear Jorma,
Just wanted to say thank you for an outstanding weekend of music and fun. I had such a blast at the shows. I thought you guys were Awesome at the Towne Crier, really neat place, Trial by Fire was the high light and also Seachild, then came the show in Brooklyn and you guys just rocked it, felt like old school again. Thank you to Bill, Barry and yourself for taking the time to do the show for the kids and their families and bringing out awareness to Autism which we seem to hear about more and more everyday.

Yes, I was going to point that out, how Norton’s entrance into Ralph’s apartment influenced the Seinfeld writers.
So, we’ve shared our middle-age memories and also learned something new:
Next time there’s another benefit that Jorma is going to do a show for:
1) It isn’t a secret.
2) We can tell each other, by -e-mail; just not on this website.
3) We can get tickets and go see the show.
If it’s another Bay Ridge show, we can meet before at a great restaurant that I go to there. Yes, there’s a happy hour and good food. There’s an indoor parking garage a couple of blocks away (it’s notoriously difficult to find a parking spot in Bay Ridge) and we can hop on the Fifth Ave. bus to the venue (a ten minute ride).@Andy K

LOL! That was such a funny show and the characters’ humor was very often centered around all of the special events, activities, places and destinations that were available to those Raccoon “brothers under the pelt”. @Steven Levenson
I just saw that the boys are scheduled to play the Common Ground on the Hill Festival in MD on July 12th. Will that be Electric (hope so!)?

Back in my “formative” years it would not have been unusual to spend an evening with my buddies, listening to Jorma in his different configurations till 11:30, when The Honeymooners came on on WPIX. I remember thinking that Ralph and Ed and Jack & Jorma were alike in that they were both two guys who did stuff I enjoyed the hell out of. 40+ years later and I still do.
One of the reason Ralph was so invested in the Raccoons was members could be buried in the Raccoon National Cemetery located in Bismark, ND, causing Alice to remark that she’d always wanted to see the West.

Jorma, thank you, Barry, Bill, and the good Racoon folks for your support of the kids. As a single parent of an autistic daughter, it is gratifying to see people pull together to help these youngsters to scale new heights. A lot of my friends sported blue shirts today in honor of Autism Awareness Day. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to hitting FPR for Glass Harp and Moonalice in the coming months. God Bless!

I know and have heard how wonderful it was. Believe me, I would have been there,
but I was out of town and unable to get back to NYC in time.
Just to be able to attend the Beacon show in Nov. (or early Dec.) I have had to enlist Joe in D.C., to help by ordering a ticket for me. I’m going to be out of the USA and working, so I won’t be able to pay attention to ticket-sale dates and concert-date announcements.
I’m going as a regular fan — just like you guys. Since I’m going to be hanging-out with you before the show, I’m not just going to be a “flat-leaver” when we get to The Beacon. It’s the first concert where I’m just going as a regular fan.
I have to plan it with military precision and return to NYC a few days before
(and I don’t even know the date, yet).
The Bay Ridge Raccoons were terrific. Very helpful and friendly.I will tell you that It was a wonderful night . The guy that won the guitar was overjoyed when he was up on the stage with Jorma. Everyone was so nice and of course the music was just outstanding.In June Tuna comes to my old hometown of Toms River NJ. I can’t wait !

I had to google it (although I must have seen those shows hundreds of times):
They were members of the International Order of Friendly Sons of the Raccoons,
located in Besonhurst, Brooklyn (Bensonhurst is, as I pointed out before;
Bay Ridge adjacent).
The official greeting handshake involved touching elbows (first right, then the left) followed by “WOOOOOO!” as they wiggled the raccoon tail on their lodge hat, followed by ” Brothers under the pelt!”
Jorma: Did you and Kirchen get to keep your coonskin hats?

Is OLPH a really big church on 4th or 5th avenue in bay ridge. If it is my grandmother lived on 62nd St. She used to take me there as a kid. Does that make me a raccoon?
