When I get into D.C. tonight, I’ll ramble on about the first three electric shows, which kicked proverbial butt, but more on that later!
@doug mlyn

Hi Jorma,
Erma Franklin, classic story. Thanks for passing along terrific music history.
I’m sure many of us relate in a small way, the utmost joy of turning on friends with songs. My wife and still have most of our 45 rpm’s!
And speaking of Erma…
Jorma, you did a Q&A a few years ago on NY Radio WFUV-FM; when asked which JK original composition you’d like to hear an artist perform, you suggested Aretha Franklin singing “Turn My Life Down”. Wow, great choice! So, we have the original 1969 LP with Marty’s soulful vocal. But, that’s one original many of us would love to hear you perform. It has some classic back strumming. Maybe you’d consider working up a 2015 arrangement while you promote your new CD ‘Ain’t In No Hurry’. PS. Looking forward to Beacon Sat night, the 13th (lucky number in JA lore). Regards…George on Long Island.
Thanks, I’ll listen for the Bob Weir version. @Hamneggs
Oh my, thanks for the history. I forgot about Aretha’s sister and you just reminded me of Big Mama Thornton with “Hound Dog”. Additional thanks for the Jack connection to the song. It’s hard to get the songs you grew up with out of your head and I obviously have retained some favorites. Always good to hear from you Jorma. Have a great time in NYC. All the best to you and yours with good wishes for the New Year. Hugs!

“White Rabbit” was mentioned in this thread so here is my “White Rabbit” Unsolicited Opinion…….. No one but Grace should sing that song, no one but Janis should sing “Piece of My Heart “and no one like Tracy Nelson should sing “Down So Low” So, since they will not be singing those songs again, (maybe Tracy is still singing it) I would love to hear a male voice on the vocals.
HI Kate… Jorma here and I just thought I’d weigh in on this one. No one would presume to try to fill Grace’s shoes. She is one of the great female voices of my time and it is unfortunate that she does not sing any more, but that is her choice. Teresa Williams is one of the great female voices of this time and her agreeing to sing the song so Jack can play his legendary bass lines must be respected. This does not diminish in any way Grace’s rights of primogeniture for a song that she wrote… Our current version is darn fine though… if I do say so myself! Moving on… Janis’ version of Piece Of My Heart is also legendary… but the song did not originate with her. You must listen to Erma Franklin’s (yes, Aretha’s sister) version… the original version, I might add. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5fqWugnIhk
Jack and I both had the single… and he took the 45 over to Janis and played it for her and she dug the tune and decided to cover it. Listening to Erma’s cut… you can hear where Janis and Big Brother got the whole arrangement… almost verbatim. Both versions are great but go to the well and check it out.
You know me… credit where credit is due. Be well sister!
Well Jorma/Jack/Tuna….hope you arrived safely in the DC area.
Your DC/VA/MD fans are looking forward to a butt kicking electric show Wednesday.
FYI -6th and I synagogue is in Chinatown so their are lots of good spots to eat in the area. So this will be Jacks – pre 70th bday show..cant wait…thx
so glad you enjoyed Donna The Buffalo. Saw them for the first time in 1995 and was taken away on that musical journey that only certain bands seem to be capable of. I’m so happy they were well received too. We have them for 3 nights including New Years Eve here in Tampa @ Skippers Smokehouse! can’t wait, sure wish they could bring Tuna along!
Also saw Larry and Teresa with Hot Tuna in Jamaica last year @ the Little Feat Camp and they nailed White Rabbit then too. Thanks for your post.
Really enjoyed Donna The Buffalo. They provided a variety of sounds, rock, blues, zydeco….and nice songwriting and instrumentation. And they can jam! Keyboards, bass and lead guitar were highlights. Were very well received by Tuna fans.
While there is no doubt about the power of these electric shows kicking butt, I also LOVE the opening act, Donna The Buffalo!!! Any comments on their sets would be welcomed. Love live Jack and Jorma.
My fave electric Tuna story from the Capitol Theater in Passaic,NJ actually started the night before, or really the morning of! We went to the early and late shows @ The Academy Of Music on 4/25/75 and then later that day at the Cap on 4/26. My stub for 4/25 says it was $5.50 for the Lower Balcony, Sect R/C Row J seat 10 My Cap ticket also says $6.00 Sect R/C Row RR Seat 124
@doug mlyn
Last month my buddy in New Jersey found a ticket stub from the Capitol Theatre from 1976 for a Hot Tuna show we went to – guess how much it was – $6.00. Can you imagine 6 bucks. Doug, coulda been your first Tuna show. You are a lucky man my wife only likes acoustic Tuna. Electric blows her eardrums out. Crank it up on Saturday for the Birthday Boy! Me and a buddy are going. Wife’s stayin home.
Albany last night was electric! Great to hear White Rabbit. Jack was animated/Larry was smokin’ Look forward to the Beacon with a stage big enough for Jack to be jumpin’!
I have no doubt the electric shows kicked butt.. Making the trek again for The annual Beacon show. This has become annual event for my wife and I god bless her for being the great partner that she is.. Who knew in 1976 when a buddy of mine said he an extra ticket for Hot Tuna at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, that almost 40 years later I still have the same excitement in anticipation of a show. Besides I get to hang out with friends and family that I only get to see once or twice a year. Feeling grateful!
