We pulled into the stretch last night and finished the tracks on my new project… Tomorrow camp at the Ranch begins so I thought I’d just post some closing shots.

On my left is my old Gibson J-50. I learned to fingerpick on this guitar… Embryonic Journey, the first Hot Tuna album, Quah… and more… this instrument. Still sounds and plays great. On the right, is the Jorma Kaukonen Martin M-30 #1. The story of my life continues…

    @Jorma
Thought this note might give a smile. My first guitar was bought at a rummage for $15.00. Some unknown brand but what sealed the deal was it came with an instruction booklet on how to play. I knew nothing about guitars but I tried mightily and practiced for hours/months. Although I have big strong hands it was very difficult for me to keep in time. It was only after a new friend stopped by did I find the source of the problem. The neck was so warped that the strings were about a half inch or more off the frets. I had no way of knowing. Should have asked. Jingle Bells never sounded so awful as when I “played” my guitar.

And you still use it – how much did you pay for it?

Fender Jazzmaster?!? Really f’ ing cool Jorma. What year is that j-50?

    • Comment made on October 15, 2014 by Jorma

The J-50 is a 1958. I bought it new from Pop’s Music Store in Dayton, Ohio in 1960.

      It’s a gem…

With ya there, chuck. Much as guitars have their own personality, so do the old amps.

What I meant to say was – to all you people that remember ‘peaking’ – touché.

    Dear Jorma,

Gear envy is right! Love Myron’s guitar boat!

Have you see the Rev Gary Davis movie “Harlem Street Singer”?

I saw it a few weeks ago in NYC. It was really good!

    You were in it 😉

    Best,

    Cyndy

How are the leaves in SE Ohio – peaking yet? I haven’t used that phrase in over 30 years – for you guys that don’t know what I’m talking about – forget it. You wouldn’t get it anyway.

Jorma do you think the new project will be out by Hanukkah? I want to be able to drop sufficient hints so my wife knows what to get me.

You are a fortunate man in many ways. I must confess I have a bit of gear envy after reading this post, but I am thankful you have the tools to make more beautiful music for the rest of us!
