So I was blessed and honored to be asked to be a part of the Dear Jerry celebration at Merriweather Post in Columbia, Maryland. Myron and I got in late-ish on Tuesday for the rehearsal on Wednesday and the gig on Thursday.

The view from the hotel Tuesday night... yep Camden Yards.
The first person I saw was my old buddy Sam Bush. What a treat! Then the hits just kept on coming.

Jorma & Buddy
Buddy Miller! Cool beans. I’ve been a fan of his for years. To get to play with him was the cat’s meow… and that wasn’t all.
There was Don Was on bass… Audley Freed on guitars… Matt Rollings on keys, coolness… Raymond Weber on drums… and the McCrary sisters with soulful back up singing! Talk about a house band! And last but not least, Russ Pawl on pedal steel.! Yeah buddy!!!
Now some more pictures:

Matt Rollings, Buddy Miller, David Grisman, Don Was and Sam Bush
The boys play Shady Grove…

Getting my do done...

Jimmy Cliff Sings... beautifully!

Almost 20,000 people! Wow!
Then it was my turn to hold forth on Sugaree!

Jumping into Sugaree...

Barry Mitterhoff joins the fray...
Great to have Barry Mitterhoff on board for this classic tune!

I take a selfie with Grace Potter!

What a great time I had.

Caroline Garcia and I
In the video interview, they asked me, ‘If you could say something to Jerry right now… what would it be?’ ‘That’s easy,’ I said. ‘I bet you wish you were here. I know we do!’
And then it was time to head up to New England for a gig at the Bull Run.

Noble sentiments!

A quiet tarn...

Thank you for posting!
a little off topic, but I just talked my wife into going to the big Island end of June. and I said look honey.. what a coincidence Hot Tuna is playing two shows the exact week we’re gonna be there. How lucky am I.
Hey Jorma,
The Dear Jerry show sounded wonderful, all that talent under one roof..You did an excellent version of Sugaree, he would have been proud. It looks like your make up artist has some awesome ink too. Great show at the Crier, loved the stories and the poem was beautiful.
Safe travels and enjoy the time at home.

29,000+ fans. Wow! That must have been electric.
I was at the Merriwether show, what fun. Jorma KILLED Sugaree, what a wonderful version of a true classic. Question for Jorma, have you done Sugaree solo before? Seen Tuna do it w Larry and Teresa but not like Thursday night. What a treat! Would love to see it again. Maybe Electric Tuna at FPR in August? Just sayin… Rock on Cap’n.
I’ve always wondered a bit about this amazing blog Jorma has gifted us with. My guess is that it fulfills him much the same as his music does. How lucky are we for that?
caught the Sugaree performance as well. I had to listen to it more than once, great interpretation of that tune, one of those Jorma goose bump moments again!
Great pix, Jorma. I especially like the one with the 3 mandolin aces, as well as you with M.G.
The Crier Show was wonderful.
Thank you
Peace

This blog posting is very interesting and the photos are great.
“The quiet tarn” photo is beautiful. A “tarn” is a small mountain lake.
It’s a new vocabulary word for me. Thanks Jorma !
Watched Jorma’s performance on the WaPo website (see link below). And yeah! Jorma done Jerry proud – playing Sugaree as only Mr. K. could play it – bringing it to a whole new place that only a really authentic and personal interpretation like that can. Nice!
