I’ve been an expert on how to approach public figures (I don’t call them “rock stars”. Jorma has verified before on his blog, that he doesn’t consider himself to be a “rock star”.) for over 30 years, working in the music business.
I get paid for being an expert. I also work for free, for charity events.
Last weekend, I was working for free, giving my time and expertise at charity events in NY. I flew in from Europe to work.
I don’t live in Brighton Beach. Even if I did live there, it would not be “sad”.

What one should never do:
Don’t ever ask for a handshake, while at the urinal/ in the restroom.
(same for autographs and/or photos/selfies ).
Don’t plop down at the table and take a taste of Jorma’s kassler ripchen.
Same for his farmer’s platter.
Don’t drink from his glass of iced-tea, water, coffee or whatever is in his glass/cup. (No swapping spit or back-wash).
Other than that, us publicists/ security people are more concerned with what happens outside on the sidewalk.
A restaurant/diner/coffee shop is considered to be a controlled public environment.
The sidewalk is not. Especially in New York or in any other big city.
Other than that, proceed as suggested in my comments, above.
Hey there Jorma and Jack;
Great laid back acoustic show last night at 6th and I in DC.
Such a contrast between last weekend at the Beacon and last night..from one extreme to another; loud rocking electric to a quiet acoustic set. I really enjoyed last nights show….had my 27 year old son along with me; it was his 3d time seeing the band, plus had other friends with me as well.
Have you guys ever thought about playing at the Hamilton in DC? Real good venue, probably has about the best sound going in DC…kinda like the Birchmere; has the dinner thing going on…just thought I would throw that in.
Once again; many thanks to HFT for 3 great shows in the past 9 days. Glad you did it and glad I was able to attend. Happy holidays to you guys and yours.

There are no rules set in stone.
If you are a fan, an approach can simply be a smile and a thumbs-up, while on your way into or out of the restaurant. Or, while actually at the next table.
Add a “Hi, good to see you!” or “Great show last night!”
Or, just a smile when eye contact is made.
I’ve never known any artist who was annoyed by that. If they don’t want to be approached or acknowledged, they will be sitting at a table in the far corner,
with their back to the restaurant diners. That’s the only way to have personal time in a public place.

He is one of the nicest and most unassuming persons I have ever met. Forget the fact that he is one of the finest blues guitarists on the planet. He is a beautiful spirit who writes beautiful music.
Saturday morning we saw Jorma having breakfast in a restaurant just down from the Beacon Theatre. It was a thrill to see him but we didn’t dare impose on him during his personal time. If we had been outside on the sidewalk that would have been different and I am sure he would have responded with kindness and understanding.
It’s even more remarkable for Hot Tuna to be sitting at the next table in a place where, maybe,fellow diners don’t realize it. Hot Tuna fans can be stunned to see Jorma and Jack and can also approach them and be greeted on a human level of kindness and respect. They are eating without any expectation, except for the great food that they find in the most regular places/eateries. That’s regular surprise and happiness.
This is the true magic of Jorma: a regular guy, comfortable amongst the real people. Not looking for recognition and if approached by those who do recognize him and Jack — they are polite and o.k. with it. Even being away on tour on Thanksgiving.
I can say from my own personal experience, that they are unique in that way: being one with the people and their fans.

Happy Thanksgiving! I recognized Otto’s, Willow Grove. Authentic German fare and a spot to get an authentic German beer. In this era of the microbrew revolution,it’s harder and harder to find the real thing. You have to choose from hundreds of brand that are like the authentic. That just doesn’t seem like progress. Thanks for listening.
