Another fine weekend at the Fur Peace Ranch with Spencer Bohren, Doug Macleod, and of course, me with a song writing class.

I so love spending all my home time here at the Ranch…It’s something I always dreamed of!

Saturday night came and Michael Brewer and Tom Shipley descended upon with their wonderful music. What a moment of beautiful old time folkiness came with them.
Then it was time for Jonathan Edwards.
Jonathan sits down at the 1913 Chickering.
When my cousin Dan Birman’s dad Joe, passed, he gifted the Kaukonen family with Joe’s old baby grand. It sure sounded good with Jonathan playing it!

Going upstate tomorrow – I can’t wait. I love it up there. But the best thing is I’ll be travelling to a sunny spot. The hurricane is supposed to stay off the coast of long island. On the island it’s supposed to rain and be windy. But upstate it’s gonna be sunny and cool. Hope you guys have a great weekend.
ps drove cross country and was in San Francisco in the early 70’s and it was still really cool – but I used to hang out in Greenwich Village which was the hippest spot in the East. I used to stand on MacDougal St and sell my paintings on weekends – some of the best times of my life. That was also when I first saw HT – 1973. Thinking back, those were the days.
Thanks for your kind reply. I was much too young to have been there but I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall around you guys back in the Pre-Matrix days. I was only in grade school in the early 60s but our music teachers were turning us on to Joan Baez, Odetta and some others. Speaking of time travelling, I would have liked to see San Francisco back in the late 50s and early 60s.
Looking forward to our Labor Day weekend.
A little work all three days , than work on Wendy’s and my farms.
Maybe some road biking in Cinn ( little Miami rails to trails )& than drag out the HD’s for some rides through the countryside in Ky.
They’ll be some good music .

Yes, yes, that’s it! The moment! It’s obvious that you live by the slogan “onward”. To the next moment. We’ve all done 40 years ago, and I for one don’t want to go back. New friends are good, old friends are priceless. This blog and it’s creator seem like old friends to me because there is an obvious striving to be here, now, and it’s mighty doggone refreshing. The past brings one to where they are, it’s not who they are. Armchair philosophizing done.

Brewer and Shipley? How long have they been back together? I saw them at the Downhome Music Festival of 1979 just South of Fairfield Iowa. It was my understanding that was their last gig together back in those days. Indeed, another act had cancelled and the promoter booked them last minute after an earlier “last gig”.
Hey Nick… Jorma here. Your comment kick started a bunch of thoughts that for me really go beyond your note… so thanks for firing me up.
Mike Brewer and Tom Shipley have been around for a long time. I met MIke in the very early 60’s. The well of folkies is deep indeed… and I was one of them on a lesser known scale. David Frieberg was part of that story. Who today remembers the very successful commercial folk duo, David and Michaela? As Pete Seeger would say… ‘Wasn’t that a time?’ Anyway… Tom Shipley has been an independent producer for decades… he is a member of Engineers Without Borders and part of the staff of Missouri University Of Science And Technology. The boys have have never had to ‘get back together’ because they were never really apart. They have been lifelong musical friends and play together whenever the spirit moves them. People sometimes ask me, ‘Do you ever think about retiring?’ I say, ‘Why, so I can spend more time playing the guitar?’ Most of us who play music do it for the sheer love of the moment and if we can make a living doing it.. that’s the frosting on the cake.
For me, one of the reasons I am able to have these conversations with you all is because of Jefferson Airplane. Many people only know me only because of this, and that’s OK. That part of my life is how I got here, but it’s not who I am. The whole 60’s and 70’s things that saw bands as conjoined families is occasionally but not always true. Wow… I’m really starting to ramble on. Anyway… thanks for firing me up Nick. Our lives are constructed of amazing little microcosms but at the end of the day, if we can look in the mirror and like what we see…

Another great Saturday night at FPR! Special thanks to Hurl and the staff for their hospitality. B&S were great as was Athens’ favorite son Jonathan Edwards. And, always an extra treat when the host guests with the artists. I wish I could have met Mr. Macleod. I’ve never seen him play but have always really enjoyed the articles he has written for Blues Revue mag over the years.
Another productive, rejuvenating and relaxing long weekend at FPR. It just keeps getting better. A lot of super fun live music too.
Jorma I was thinking about the silo and I thought a big kaleidoscope inside the silo would be cool. Though I’ve never been there – a projector inside the silo projecting onto the ceiling or walls would be really psychedelic. Just a thought.
We do have a light show on the outside of the Psylo… done by The Brotherhood Of Light. It’s a digital rendition of a liquid show. Pretty darn nice, if we do say so ourselves….

Interesting start to Brewer /Shipleys show was SHAKE OFF THE DRAGON( w/JOHN CIPPOLINA ).
Than we meander over to the PSYCHEDELIC SILO –John Cippolinas sister was on a streaming video talking about John.I always enjoyed Quicksilver,Gary Duncan crackled , but CIPPOLINA was sublime .
Garcias art work was cool , but the real star of the silo :The modified HD , Dead themed by Prarie Prince .
Very cool airbrushing , Particulary the Indian chief with full headress- skull of course.
It would be great if you could post a close up of both sides of the gas tank.

Looks like the sumac is starting to change colors – a harbinger of the beauty to come with the next season. I guess that’s sumac. Still looks purty, even if it ain’t.
Mike and Tom’s show was every bit as fine as my already ‘high’ expectations. I’m sure some of their songwriting stories had an impression on the students, as well. Thanks to all you at The Station for another fine evening. m
