Welcome to Pellston...

Welcome to Pellston...

Early flight… small planes… all good though!

As soon as you get off the plane in the Pellston Airport… there’s baggage claim… and a bear. Yep… we’re in the North Country now! And what better to do in the North Country? Find pasties.

Now my Dad was from Ironwood up in Gogebic County in the UP. Pasties are what’s for everything so since we were so near the Macinac Bridge… we figured ‘What the heck? Let’s go to the UP.

Yes folks, it's a BAB.

Yes folks, it's a BAB.

Cross the bridge, enter the Upper Peninsula and lo… Suzy’s.

Goodness abounds

The wonderful joint, rich in the Pasty Lore of the area.

I ordered a beef pasty with fresh coleslaw…

This is it. Suzy's beef pasty.

Seated eating… outside, of course.

Good food... good friends!

Then back across the bridge for a look at the Blissfest festival grounds.

I know what you mean – clean air, clean water, great fishing and no neighbors. Really miss the wildlife. Wish I could move up there tomorrow. My wife would shoot me. She’d go crazy.

Talking about bear – Just came back from the Catskills and it was so peaceful – 7 days in the country and I don’t like civilization anymore. This morning as I sat on my porch upstate and saw a herd of 8 white tailed deer playing in a foggy valley meadow while I awaited the sun over the mountaintop. Wednesday evening I was ready to take a dip in the stream when I saw a 200 lb black bear – 25 yards away – heading to the stream as well. I retreated to the house – real quick. It was so nice to see great blue herons, hawks and turkeys every day. Oh well I guess I stuck here on Long Island for a few weeks. I’ll try to make the best of it.

Lotsa Finns up on the U.P. Jorma. I have friends from the Navy lived outside Marquette in the Negaunee/Ishpheming area. When I was visiting them in 1990 an old fella saw my Jorma shirt-“Kaukonen”! he says..”Now there’s a great Finn name if there ever was one”…..True story….boy if you and Jack walked into my pasty store I would fall over…safe travels and looking forward to next weekends festivities at the Arts and Mind Fest!!!
