So yesterday Vanessa and Izze and I forayed into North Beach. I actually found a parking place on Grant St. which augured well. We went into St. Francis Of Assisi where Paul used to pray regularly.

The girls on the steps of St. Francis
This is a beautiful little cathedral and it had been many years since I had been inside.

Calm and serene
I headed for the candles…

One for Paul, and one for Signe too!

We stayed for a while in the cool quiet and then headed across the street to the Cafe Trieste.

Another kind of sacrament... coffee, and an almond croissant

Yeah Paul… I missed your presence.
I stopped at the coffee counter and bought some beans to take home.

Good times
Too bad I never got to show Paul my Aeropress Coffee maker. He would have dug it.
Time marches on… and so do we.
Onward
God bless Brother Paul
Such a sad day,you are missed paul and signe, but never will be forgotten,so many years you carried me through good times and bad,im at a loss for words.the airplane and starship have and always will be a staple in my life till the end, someday i look forward to a jam session with spence, signe, paul, and jerry from on high.sorry for the loss we all feeling Jorma sincerly…BTW thank you Jorma for everything you have done and do keeping our spirits up and as always look forward to seeing you next chance i get : ) best regards brother!
I honestly can’t imagine what it would be like to lose three wonderful friends and colleagues within such a short period.
Somehow, “My condolences” and “You have my sympathy” just don’t seem to rise to the occasion.
There’s no doubt, though, that this is a beautiful and fitting blog entry.
Greg Martelli, from your description that would be St. Peter and Paul Church. It’s right across from Washington Square Park (which is where the cover photo to “Trout Fishing in America” was taken, if you’re up on your 60’s culture).
Nice post.
I first met Paul at the Trieste about 11 years ago. I can understand why he loved the place. Their particular brand of “roofing tar” makes it worthwhile to visit North Beach as well as City Lights and the USA(Sicilian)Cafe, both just around the corner from the Trieste. I do the USA for lunch and Tratttoria Contadina for dinner. The MUNI bus takes me through Chinatown and goes to Union Square, not far from my usual hotel. My last time out, I rode the cable car to Lombard Street and walked down it to North Beach. Very pleasant.
All I can say is –
You guys&girls are class acts.
There’s a Catholic church(St.Pauls?) across from a park and SF rock poster shop where Joe DiMaggio went that we always stop in to visit when we are in the Bay Area.
Peace &Serenity be yours
