Morning at the FPR... getting ready to load the bus...
So a week ago tomorrow we started out on this little odyssey… Seems like a lifetime, or is it a minute? Hard to say. Anyway, we loaded up at the Fur Peace Ranch.
The bus... and Zach's Gran Cherokee
Vanessa and I got a Jeep Gran Cherokee for my son Zach, and I needed to drive it to Hagerstown to drop it off with him on the way to New Jersey.
The torch and the keys are passed.
Youth takes over the wheel as it should be. The bus picked me up at the Pilot Truckstop and we continued to Red Bank, New Jersey.
A young man heads back to Virginia.
So, the ‘work’ part of this trip began. The Count Basie Theater in Red Bank has long been one of our favorite stops and this was a great place to begin our four day run with Leftover Salmon. These are a great bunch of guys and fabulous players. The Tuna guys and I had been looking forward to this part of the run for a long time. What do we have here? Aqua Rock? Who knows… anyway…

So… that was that. Yesterday was a ‘day off,’ which means we drove 600 some miles on the bus to Kent, Ohio where we will be at the Kent Stage tonight… acoustic.
The Electric Trio run is over for a bit… but we’ll be back!

Dayum, Jorma, I just got a helluva challenge thowed at me. I’m on Levon Helm Studio’s mailing list, and they sent me something said you’re gonna be at the Barn Dec. 2. Don’t hardly see how I can miss that, but it’s a long damn way from east Texas and I’m just gonna have to see if I can make it happen. Can’t think of a better place to see you and your guitar. Next best place to my living room, and I don’t think I’m gonna get you in there, so I’m putting on my thinking cap, getting out my rabbit’s foot, and bustin’ up my piggy bank. Onward (to the Catskills, I hope).

Hot Tuna acoustic in my hometown at the Rio Theatre. Then, the next day Electric HT in Golden Gate Park! Hell yah!
Last year in the Park, it was the largest crowd I’ve ever seen. Maybe 100,000+ at the Tuna show. Hell Yah
“Feel so Good>Invitation>Santa Clause Retreat>Feel So Good” at Golden Gate Park in October, Jorma….sure, it’s gonna take some practice to get the cues down, but I think it will go over like gangbusters, baby!

Tastes – it’s why a knucklehead like me can say I really liked movies like “Dumb and Dumber,” “Snow Dogs,” and “Master of Disguises.” This in spite of the reviewer Rotten Tomatoes saying “Master of Disguise is in the top five worst movies of the 2000’s.
When the Eagles Hotel California came out, I told a good friend I didn’t like the album. he was shocked and said quite incredibly, “Really?” I said I really disliked the song Hotel California. He then says, “That’s my favorite song on the album!” (I’ve tried to listen to that song, but I just can’t take more than about 30 seconds of it.
I’ll bet most of our kids would not like Van Morrison’s classic, “Astral Weeks.” I think that was one of the most exquisite albums I ever had the pleasure of listening to.
one of the greatest songs I’ve “ever” heard play was Good Shepard at Space in Evanston on a Wednesday night two years ago. Jorma, Cassidy (especially) and Barry just ripped that song apart. I doubt my kids would share my enthusiasm, although I’m sure they would note, as Izze did, “that they were very good at it.
It is nice to be exposed to new things though. I remember heading up to bed one night, hoping to catch the end of a bull’s game on TV. Much to my dismay, my wife was watching a special on Karen Carpenter. I sheepishly asker her, “Are you watching this?” (in other words, can I change the channel) With lightning bolt rapidity she said “yes.”
Before heading back downstairs, I decided to listen to one song – I was hooked almost instantly by the her melancholic voice and tragically shortened life. It turned out to be much better than the Bulls game.

I enjoyed all 3 NYC area shows immensely. It was great seeing Jack step out so much and the setlists were amazing, I mean Feel So Good, Sea Child, Sleep Song, Water Song….doesn’t get much better. And Leftover Salmon was an excellent pairing. Those boyz can pick!
The Space @ Westbury is a fantastic venue, intimate with perfect sightlines and acoustics. Up there with the Egg in Albany. Come back Baby (to the Beacon in Nov) – tix on sale tomorrow!

Living in DC I am really happy and surprised to see you playing electric at the hamilton day after turkey. I have been their for other shows the past few years. Great place. Small. Historic building with lots of history attached to it. If you have not read up about the hamiltond life you may want to check it out. Should be good for tuna. Any idea Jorma when tickets go on sale for that show????

I’m the guy who keeps begging you to come to Tucson. But short of that, the stream on Saturday night was just terrific. It was so well produced, I guess is the word. I would say edited but it was live. It was just great. And I wish you to more of them. Or come to Tucson. Or both!
I was at the Count Basie also. Loved the sound of the Firebird!!! Great show good people doesn’t get much better than that.
