Bigger than life...

Bigger than life...

Some wintry mix falling and outside the window of the bus we see the Tootsie Roll eighteen wheeler. I’m not much of a candy eater but Trick Or Treating always brings out the Tootsie Roll in me.

I haven’t been to Lee’s place since he passed. I worked on two projects there, River Of Time and Steady As She Goes. Lee played on two songs for me on River and he and Muddy and I just hung out during Tuna’s Steady As She Goes.

Time flies… really flies. It seems like Levon Helm should still be here but he’s been gone for almost half a decade… and that’s just the way it is. I missed him at his Woodstock manse, but I could feel him looking over my shoulder.

I think your friend and mine – Harvey Colman – is still coming to the Tuna shows. At the Beacon last month I heard the Harvey scream. He’s still with us in spirit.

Hey Jorma, I was at the Orpheum show. Going on 43 years for me seeing/listening to you play music, the soundtrack of my life. Once again, you did not disappoint. Your acoustic set was fantastic (any set that includes Sea Child is by definition fantastic for me), only wish you had more time. What a great double bill. My long time buddy, also a long time HT fan, and I have seen more Orpheum shows than we can count. We were simultaneously thinking to ourselves that in all the years and shows, that must have been the first time we saw you at the Orpheum. Grateful we all have made it down the road far enough to have that experience. Onward!

“Santa Clause Retreat”…..Hoppkorv, of course….Hoppkorv being some sorta Swedish sausage… a great Tuna record….a couple too many covers, but the end of the “Rampage Years” trio with Casady and the Man O’ Steel on the tubs. now THOSE…..those was the days.

Friends at the Barn told me about Jorma’s great show there.
Levon is always right there, up in the rafters, over our shoulder.

Geez, that was an easy one–Hoppkorv of course. 1976.

28 songs at the Ramble! How the heck do you do it? You need to put it in a bottle and sell it.
    Keep on keeping on Cap!

    must be the season…

I woke up this morning and for whatever reason, thought about the song “Santa Claus Retreat.” Ok tunaheads, without looking, what album is that song from. You are on your scouts honor. I’ll give you a hint – it is not Quah.

The song has been off my radar for a few decades now – love Jorma’s voice on the song. Might be a good one to add to the holiday repertoire.

Looks like you played all night at the Barn. Can’t wait for Friday – Jorma comes to Riverhead, Long Island. I’m so excited – twice in a month I get to see the Captain. That alone is amazing. This acoustic show is a early Christmas present along with a Hot Tuna Alumni T shirt from my wife. Perfect!

You, sir, are an inspiration. You beautifully sum up the power of doing what you love with the simple statement “I’m not slowing down yet…!” Focus on what you love and be grateful for what you have – you are a living example of what a life that philosophy will produce. Thank you for providing a shining example
(and it matters not whether it’s done wittingly or unwittingly). You don’t owe it, you just show it. Onward!

Hey- caught the Stowe Tuna show followed by Jorma at LHS ( followed by my grandson Owain’s 1st birthday party on L.I. ), reflecting upon how I’ve been doing this for 40 goddamn years now! Of course, a couple hundred Grateful Dead shows in 23 years occupied much of my attention…anyhow, a long way from ,say, the Commack Arena to Levon’s barn! BTW, I admire how nicely them expensive CF Martin guitars stay in tune- I guess you get what you pay for!

Jorma/Hot Tuna and the TTB perfect together. I wish you were joining them for their annual Sunshine Music Fest here in St. Pete in Jan. as you, Jack and Barry did a few years back. Ah, there’s always next year. But, please, come see us sooner than that.
