When I got back from the last little run, Fall was making its presence felt here in Southeast Ohio. Every time we sit down to eat I get to listen to Dad’s old radio and have Mom and Dad’s travel poster from the 30’s watch over me.

Mom and Dad's old poster... Dad's radio... nice memories at breakfast
Pumpkins as of yet uncarved… it’s coming though!

Boo
Last Friday Vanessa and Izze and Ginger And Montana and I went up to the Ridges, where they had October hayrides around the grounds of the old insane asylum.

Some say it's haunted...
Such an interesting history… This asylum was still in use in the 70’s and it was built right after the Civil War.

Amazing
We were riding around in an Amish horse drawn wagon… perfect in itself.

Vultures atop the ol power plant

Whoah big fella!
The girls stopped to take a look at the old cemetery.

We've all got to end up somewhere...

Wait for the wagon... we'll all take a ride!

Good times in the country
Then as Saturday rolled around, my dear friends Marty And Jerry celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and renewed their vows.

Dancing to Unchained Melody
This is good stuff… you don’t hear about a lot of 50th anniversaries these days. Love these guys!
Then in the evening, Loudon Wainright III came to the Fur Peace Station and, as always, gave a marvelous performance!

Just before the concert...
Loudon Sat down at Joe Berman’s old 1913 Chickering.

Loudon at the baby grand...
Loudon was marvelous, as always.
On Sunday, Vanessa and Izze and I sent to the Carpenter Inn to help celebrate Children’s Roshashana.

Izze contemplates a career as a baby sitter at the Inn.
Carol and I played music for the service… my pleasure.
At home Izze sat down at the Yamaha and played ‘A Part Of Your World.’ Brought tears to my eyes!

I love this! Mom's Zubeida Aga painting looks on.
Wonderful as Fall moves on!

Fall in the country.
Nice…Family 1st…luv and peace, uncle jack
@johno
Johno, I couldn’t agree with you’re statement more.
They smoked the Grammy show.
God I love HFT
Thanks Andy
Every time I watch it I can’t believe we have Jack and Jorma or Hot Tuna still touring. We are incredibly lucky. And I get the feeling they are digging it.
@Andy K
Grace was always a creature of the moment and her speech was short. Grace’s magic was always from the bite of her muse and best delivered straight through the music. That’s why she always downplayed her talent when asked about it directly. Grace best expressed it through her painting. She leaves wordless a resplendent wonderland of the 60’s lavished with psychedelic finery and all the trappings that went along with it both spiritual, musical, and physical…
Alexander Kantner:
Music is transcendent. Music has the potential to raise us up. To ennoble us. To give us the courage to not yield to despair. And to help us to make a stand against greed and war, oppression and exploitation, ignorance and injustice. And I believe that it was my father’s hope that we all carry this fire through these dark days in which we live, or, better, in his words, that we become “Volunteers Of America”.
Marty Balin:
I’m grateful to the wonderful musical journey my life continues to take. To all my fellow Jefferson Airplane band members, through its various changes, I thank you for a dream come true. It was the chemistry of our mixed passions and the love from our fans that led us to this celebratory lifetime achievement award, which I’m very proud to receive. Thank you.

Yeah he did a great cover of Dylan’s Times They Are A Changin’
Hiya, Brian 😉@Brian Doyle
Thanks a lot Brian – just watched it. Jack and Jorma were just smoking. Nice speech Jorma.
@Brian Doyle
Oops, here it is. Starts right after 39:00. (Watch it while you can. PBS is notorious for dropping links quickly)

@johno
I can’t believe it isn’t up on You-Tube. I got all excited and jumped up to point out Jorma, Grace, Jack, and ‘the woman who sang on the battleship’ to my 84 year old mother. In the process I wasn’t listening to it all, especially Marty’s statement summing up the band, and I want to hear it again.
No recording posted to You-Tube? Come on! I want to hear Jorma’s licks again too.
Re: Grammy show – Jack was resplendent in suit and purple tie, Jorma looked ageless with fingers as nimble as ever…interesting to see their dads features in Paul and Spencer’s sons…haven’t seen Grace in forever…Wonder what was up with Marty not being there…cried while watching it, at the recognition they received, for those no longer with us, and at realizing on a deeper level just how much this music means to me.
Yes…he was a great guy. He loved Hot Tuna!
@Ruby Russo
@johno
Yes….he was the best friend I’ve ever had. Happier with than without.
Thanks a lot
@jim hitchcock
Did you know who The Bird was. His name was Harvey
@Ruby Russo
Best intro ever still belongs to The Byrd, Hot Tuna Live in Japan. Yep, Hot Tuna rocked the house on PBS
Shufflin shoes….well put.
@johno
Shamrock was another large bar across from Armory on Kingbridge near Davidson or a Grand

I missed the show – damn it. Does anyone know if it’s anywhere online.
A daughters’ head on Dads shoulder, priceless. I thought Grace looked as beautiful as always (Greg Allman indeed). And of course another amazing performance by the boys. Great show.
Just finished listening to J D doing You’re Only Lonely. Special guy.
That was pretty special, J D Souther’s run up to Linda Rondstadt, JK the elder statesman with Izzie leaning on his shoulder before fidgeting, looked like Gregg Allman to his right…
Nice suit, Jorma. Jack had his shuffling shoes on. Good to see Mr. Van Cortland’s well-done intro.
great show tonite. looking forward to the beacon in nov.
Ham & eggs, trying to remember the shamrock. I used to hit the archway when home from school 1972 and forward.
RunDMC shouting out Jefferson Airplane and the Bronx pioneers is a beautiful thing indeed. First heard rap outside The Shamrock on Kingsbridge Road in the wee hours of the morning many moons ago

Tremendous performance. Warm atmosphere. Grace said “If I fall over just pick me up and take me away.”
Jack and Jorma really carried the show and delivered a heart-felt performance with deeply felt sound to their playing. And Cathy was on her best game. Good to hear Jorma bend the strings like in the day…Paul wasn’t gone that long so there was a missing man thing to the presentation.
@Ham n Eggs
@Brian Doyle
Huh, already set to record on my DVR, and I didn’t set it
Jorma gets much deserved Lifetime Achievement Grammy.
On our Florida PBS at 9pm tonight!

Testing the host’s patience 😉
Typical comment.
Actually, there was a long period of time when I couldn’t post a comment about anything, without being trolled.
Andriy says “Hello troll!”
WTF is she talking about – diahrrea of the mouth.
I don’t like maple syrup on my waffle. Too many calories……………….
@carey georgas
They are trying to “acid wash” them. LOL!!!
O.K. :
“You’re the cream in my coffee
you’re the sugar in my bowl”
The gang of some of those “experienced” commenters, used to go bezerky whenever I quoted,(or even mentioned) another band/musician, other than Jorma/Hot Tuna.
They are now trying to ignore those comments that they posted.
The internet is forever, worldwide.
I thought you’d throw out the next line…@Barbara Jacobs
Thanks. ( Don’t even get me started!)
In my opinion, they were the most rollicking live band.
I have photos that I took of them back in those days. The photos are stuck in one of those place-and-stick photo albums. At some point, those glue-pages turn to cement, so I can’t remove them. I would need to bring the entire photo album to Bill, for show-and-tell.@carey georgas
Oh, mama mama, you’re like 18 carat gold…@Barbara Jacobs
I can recite that intro and then sing every song on that LP, in order of performance. From memory. Still.
Did you know that Bill Kirchen from Commander Cody is a good friend of Jorma’s. He came to the Beacon and played at Jorma’s 70th Birthday Concert.
@carey georgas
From way back at the dawn of the Third Coast. I was there from ’72 to ’75, then went back into the piney woods, been here ever since.
@Barbara Jacobs
Yep, I can hear the announcer right now introducing that album!

“FROM DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS — LIVE AT THE ARMADILLO WORLD HEADQUARTERS —
IT’S COMMANDER CODY AND HIS LOST PLANET AIRRRMENNN!”@carey georgas
Thank you.@Ham n Eggs
@Andy K
They recorded it over 3 nights, and I was in the house for one of them.
@Carey Georgas
I recall a great Commander Cody & the Lost Planet Airmen live album recorded in the 70’s at the Armadillo WHQ in Austin.
Wonderful photos, Jorma.
Another excerpt from the limbook:
“My consciousness awoke sometime during 1952. I remember standing in front of my parents’ 1949 Philco Radio, listening to “The Blue Tango” by Leroy Anderson and His Pop Concert Orchestra. It was number one on the Hit Parade for several months that year.
Every time the tune came on that radio — I would run up, stick my nose in the
wood-trimmed grille cloth, and dance a jig.
I still have the old Philco Radio. I had it restored by a friend in Atlanta who
collects Wurlitzer Juke Boxes.”

@Carey Georgas
That’s pretty good – I had Burgers on vinyl and played it til there were no grooves left. The rest of their music was outstanding also: Americas Choice, Phosphorscent Rat, Yellow Fever, Hoppkorv and Double Dose. We are so lucky to have their music. And have Jorma’s blog to talk about it. Jorma – Thank You.
@jim hitchcock
I bought a 1942 Zenith radio at a yard sale a couple of weeks ago, stands about 3 and half feet Tall, short wave and every thing. Imagine what history this thing has broad cast.
Overwhelmed with the CRS’s. Omission being the RCA VICTOR LSP-4238 pressing.
Jerry sez “KEEP ON KEEPIN’ ON”…………….
@jim hitchcock
Hold it! Volunteers on vinyl. Categorically disqualified?
PAZ CHIN-IN Pentacle dispersion/which flag stripe?
@Carey Georgas
@johno
Burgers on 8-Track. I win 🙂
I see the light- Is that an Orb next to the wagon?
I think most of us are – at least half
That’s what makes this blog so good.
@carey georgas
I am experienced.@johno
That’s really cool Carey – both go back a long way – Burgers. Then thru the 70’s – the heyday of Hot Tuna. Saw them around 100 times mostly backstage then. It was a real trip. If you know what I mean.
Hey, Jorma, you guys ever play the Armadillo WHQ in Austin?
Now they recognize the folly of trying to wall-off what is the general condition of the rest of society lol…
Just found blog. Liked Jack and Jorma from Airplane days. Bought Burgers when it came out in ’72, loved ’em ever since. I live in a kind of backwater part of Texas, so I never got around to seeing them until this summer in Colorado. The genuineness of their performance and sincerity exhibited in this blog refreshed me to no end.@johno
Are you a new HT fan – or an old one who just found the blog? I’ve been a fan since 1973 when a friend of mine had front row tix to HT at a college on Long Island. HT blew me away.
@carey georgas
You, sir, are the embodiment of the phrase “stop and smell the roses”. Your appreciation of the moment is present in every post, and it is an inspiration to me in my journey through this world.
Blaupunkt is VERY high end, their automobile modules considered the best in the day.
Wurlitzer??
Was pondering whether the radio was a Heath kit but does not appear so. My brother built one back in the sixties and that thing was a gem.
That would be a Blaupunkt… my first hi fi set was a Heathkit. Built it in 1964,
I just got back today from a long weekend upstate – it was beautiful – yellows, reds and oranges – the Catskills are ablaze in color. If you’re a leaf peeper – get up to the mountains. It will be peak this week – the foliage is amazing. It was cold last night – 35. Tonite will bring the first frost on the pumpkin with it expected to go down to the mid twenties.
I think my favorite time of year is fall, besides Christmas. After living in upstate NY where it is so beautiful this time of year to down South it’s taking some adjusting but I’m loving the weather, 40 at night and 75 during the day. I’m told that I can drive up to the mountains where it’s beautiful, so I’ll have to venture out. I heard that the Beacon show rocked, sorry I missed it but looking forward to coming up for the shows next month and catching up with old friends.
Take care and enjoy the family. Izze is growing up so fast…..
