As amazing as the tour with Derek and Susan was, there’s no place like home. We had a camp and a concert the weekend I got back so we all hit the ground running. Gretchen Peters was there to teach a songwriting class and play a concert with her husband Barry Walsh. Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams were also teaching and played a magnificent show… I got to sit in with both families and what a treat it was!

Before it was all over Larry and Matt and I had to pose with our Jorma M30 Sunburst beauties. Matt now owns Frank’s guitar with was the one that started all the sunburst models. Thanks Frank. You’re going to miss that guitar though!

Jorma did you see the eclipse this Monday. It was so amazing – I had the glasses and it was truly a cosmic event. We got to see the sun 71% covered by the moon. The next one will be in April 2024. That one will be on the East coast it will be a total eclipse in upstate NY. I can’t wait for that one.

In NYC., Andryiy is in my apartment, where the entire transit of the sun is visible from my windows throughout the course of the year.
About an hour ago, there was a darkened area,a slice,on the right side.
No darkening of the sky, although it’s 90 degrees and clear sky.
Now,at 3:15pm-ish,the sun isn’t in it’s usual place in the skyline and it’s so bright, that people on the beach are feeling the intense heat.
can you look at the eclipse through the “Sex Specs” that adorned the cover of one of the Hot tuna albums?
Hey Jorma – indeed I missed it before I shipped it (even drove down to NY with just so there could be no Customs mishaps). But if I’m honest about it, Matt will do justice to the guitar with the music he’ll make on it – far more than ever I could … But I did enjoy my 5 years with it!

Total eclipse of the sun on Monday in the US…
“Said crossing Jordan I need not fear…”
Allelu! I finally have a moment to thank Jorma and Jack for a splendiferous show at the Arcada in ST. Charles. After a whirl wind tour with The Tedeschi Trucks and Wood Brother bands, I thought I might see two tired old troubadours, longing for the warmth and comfort of their homes. As the band Heartsfield once sang, “Rocking chair a taking me, away I go…”
The Arcada show was piggy backed on top of two shows in Minneapolis the night before. It’s about a 7 hour ride by car that has power steering that works; and, of course, a very wary eye for Smokey, especially around the Eau Claire stretch of highway in northern Wisconsin. The point being that Jack and Jorma had to be about as dog tired as the two old dogs laying upon the grassy hill that Jorma sang about in Heart Temporary. (once again – what a great, great song)
The boys took the stage to a pretty thunderous applause; from my perspective, it was a very appreciative crowd that ventured from their sofas, on an absolutely gorgeous August night. The clapping was enthusiastic and robust! I can’t recall the last time I’ve seen a band on a Sunday night.
Sunday nights for me are generally laid back, a sort of a recharging the batteries for the upcoming week’s maelstroms. I like to sit back on the deck with a Stella or two, watching the birds descend upon the bird feeders – LOL – highly therapeutic!
However, my concerns that it might be a laid back show were quickly dispelled. Jorma’s voice and picking were incredibly strong; I can’t emphasize that enough so I’ll say it again, Jorma’s voice and picking were incredibly strong. Maybe it was because they were only playing 6 or 7 songs a night while on The Wheels of Soul tour – but the boys definitely had some energy and a palpable eagerness. As Jorma mentioned, they had a great time on the harried July road trip, covering a lot of ground. But then he said, “But that was then, and this is now.”
They started off with True Religion – dang, that’s just a flat out fun song. And how is it that Hesitation Blues never gets old? Roads and Roads, (how apropos after the Wheels marathon!), just warmed the cockles of my heart; Lord, Jorma just went to town on the solo part in that song. Preacher definitely picked the guitar on that one.
Trial By Fire was the song of the night for me. Jorma segued into it with about for about ten to fifteen seconds with some delphic picking that left a lot of us guessing what the next song was going to be. It wasn’t long before “that boney hand come a beckonin’, saying buddy come and go with me…” We all gladly followed!
Sleep Song was another golden apple that I’ve never heard Tuna play live. It’s almost as if some Muse gave Jorma the following lyrics; they are just to perfect.
“Winter wind keeps blowing through the trees
But life keeps breathing gaily as you please
Hey now, silver birches lying by the road
Branches lined against the winter snow.”
After Water Song, definitely showcasing Jack’s incredible bass, Jorma and Jack got up and took a bow. It was then Jorma said, “This is where we pretend like were done and you clap and we come back.” Instead, they just took their seats once again and played Genesis. After all, it was a Sunday night and a lot of us old fogey’s had to hit the hay. I think even those two old troubadours were ready to lie upon that grassy hill at this juncture!
Suffice it to say, I was quite surprised with the energy put forth by Jorma and Jack on the last stop of the tour. They were tight as a bull’s ass. Khalil Gibran once noted, “Man’s value is in the few things he creates and not in the many possessions he amasses.” The body of music created by Jorma and Jack far surpasses any possessions they may have amassed. We are blessed by it.
Keep those lamps trimmed and burning…

This post may be brief, but captures the essence of the FPR. I was fortunate to meet Matt and Larry during my madden voyage to the Ranch. He is a fine picked and friendly dude. His relationship with the instructors, staff, other students and guests is what it is all about. I was taken back to the Ranch by this post. I have no doubt that Martin is in good hands.
I noticed that the Arts and Minds Fest past without much fan-fare. Of course, you were on the road. I hope to hit the Fest next summer and see you and yours sooner than that. For those that live in the NYC area, go see Matt. He and many other students continue to the art of fine picking. Support local music!

Hey Jorma, it may not be much of an entry, but my experience visiting here is that it doesn’t take many words for you to express humility, gratitude, and happiness. You can even make the short ones uplifting.

I have to agree there is no place like home. I didn’t realize how much I missed it till I moved back. Not looking forward to the winters though. Take the good with the bad I guess. You look so happy when you are home.
