San Francisco and Hardly, Strictly Bluegrass were delightful as they always are. I flew in the day before the show and out after our set on Sunday. That’s just part of the gig and it’s more than OK. Back at the Fur Peace Ranch there is always something to be done. We have a camp this weekend with Chris Smither and Doug MacLeod so there was the usual honey/do list waiting. Speaking of waiting… Bedford Township finally OK’d paving for St. Clair Rd. Our heartfelt thanks to the trustees… and the workers who did the job.

It is true that all our vehicles are four wheel drive, but it looks like we won’t need that for a while.

Now… some interesting Jefferson Airplane news. Jampol Artist Management has taken over the reins of protecting and expanding the legacy of the Airplane. For years the management we had did little or nothing creative. In the short time we have been with Jampol much has already happened. Our music has appeared in more movies in the last year or so than in more than a decade and now this!

Yes folks, it’s a Cover Girl ad featuring one of Marty’s great songs, I Like it. This is a pre-Grace gem and there’s an interesting sidebar. Back in those early days, the guitar heroes were guys like Mike Bloomfield and Buddy Guy and other blues greats. I remember playing the Avalon Ballroom with the Airplane after Takes Off came out. We did ‘I Like It’ and I actually got a round of applause after my little solo. That had never happened before and I still remember that moment fondly.

Having our song featured in a Cover Girl ad with Ayesha Curry, Issa Rae, Katy Perry, and others has given me creds with our eleven year old daughter that money can’t buy. It’s the little things for sure!

Indeed…

Also, I was just thinking this morning (no kidding) about possibly bringing my bike and going for an early morning ride this weekend before class – then I thought of the gravel road and thought “that wouldn’t be good” – BUT, now that I just read the post that the road’s paved I’m bringing my bike for an early morning ride!!!

Late to the party, but thanks for that HSB set. The set closer Funky #7 was something really special to me. As a kid growing up on Long Island in the 70s, Hot Tuna was an essential part of my life. Always takes me back and makes me feel good today to see and hear you guys jamming with such gusto. Meanwhile tomorrow trying to find me a scheme…

That sounds amazing, so contemporary and totally right on with the visuals. Jack’s bass along with Marty’s vocal. Great!

@Brian Doyle You could be very right on that, we may never really know the full truth. I lived in Maryland when the Pentagon Papers were leaked and that shed a very bad light on LBJ. Age has faded this memory a bit, but I did live in Laurel, MD and went to school in Bladensburg and because of Fort Meade and the NSA in Laurel area, we had a lot of things going on. We used to take a Greyhound bus into D.C. for $1.00 round trip and on the way back stop in College Park to see what was happening at the University of Maryland for the college campus experience. I actually locked eyes with George Wallace when he was in the ambulance right after he was shot. Who knew back then that these historical events would leave such an impression on us. Jefferson Airplane sang the anthems of our time.

The documentary cut corners and seriously misrepresented Johnson’s role in aiding the build up. Oliver Stone’s movie ‘JFK’ was the accurate version where Johnson told the generals in the smokey back room “Get me elected and I’ll give you your war.” Burns’ series tried to make Johnson look like he was a victim who was forced into defending the advisors and was begrudgingly dragged in to it. Heck, I’ll say it outright, LBJ was part of the CIA conspirators who killed JFK in order to get the war…LBJ even admitted there was a conspiracy to Cronkite in an interview CBS then buried…The documentary also misrepresented JFK’s position and tried to make it look like he was taking a stand against communism and was pro-war…The statements they showed from Kennedy were just to placate the right-wingers…JFK was actually formulating a neutralization policy at that time and intended to withdraw by 1965…

Book Tour in the afternoon, hopefully a show in the evening !!! Can’t wait

Back to the Cover Girl Ad, great tune. I am sure it brought a smile to Marty, hope he is doing well in his recovery.

Indeed its the little things, when my daughter Diana was 11 we did the Hot Tuna Blues cruise, with her sitting in the front row with her headset on listening to the Spice Girls. I know the feeling

Hey Cap’n, I have a similar photo of that Rte. 61 sign taken many moons ago during one of my treks to the Promised Land called the Fur Peace Ranch. That sign was one of the inspirations for my latest tattoo. Good stuff!

Jorma, the sounds of the sixties were written by artists like yourself, Ken Burns noted the explosion of music during this time period. You should be proud of your accomplishments and I know from personal experience how humble you really are. read your latest post and I agree with you 100% on what should be here for your site.

@Brian Doyle Brian, in a discussion with Ken Burns about this, he wanted to delve more into the war and the politics along with providing the sound track of the times. He did not interview either John McCain or John Kerry but he did notify them that he would be putting in their newsreel interviews, etc. Along with Jane Fonda’s full statement while in Hanoi. His biggest focus was the impact of the war on the young and the political moves behind the scenes that dragged it out for so long. Many of the interviews with veterans brought tears to my eyes. I served during that era but they sent me to the other side of the world.

Burns’ Viet Nam documentary also included many Hendrix songs but never mentioned Jimi’s death – which, as the facts come in, could have a lot to do with that turmoil and war…

    Great song- I like it.
    It’s embodiment of Marty’s ethos

I would applaud loudly if you ever played the lead in another Marty gem, the kick ass guitar that sets the tone for “IF YOU FEEL”

Great ad. Great music and the models aren’t to shabby either. I love the eyelash flutter timed up with the cycle engine revving in the background near the end.

Great news about the book. Thanks in advance. I’m sure it took a good chunk of your time. Hope it’s been a pleasant experience for you. I imagine the memories and emotions can take you in a million different directions.

“Embryonic Journey” played in Part 9 of Ken Burns “The Vietnam War” for a very sad commentary on a veteran who died over there. A very well done documentary, earlier episodes featured “Somebody to Love” and “White Rabbit” and it’s always good to establish that cred with our children, yeah, back in the day we were some bad a**es. I was taken back in history with it. Reminded of events I’d completely forgotten over the years, the political turmoil that took place, truly an eye opener.
Glad to hear of the new management, looking forward to some exciting stuff!
