From 10,000 feet
Every time we come to Maui, a trip to Haleakala is mandated, and it never gets old. The drive to Kula is amazing enough, and then you enter the National Park. I show the Ranger at the gate my Golden Age Passport an me and my carload of family and friends are passed into the park free. Age is recognized at national parks.

Not a bad view
This is one of those places here everywhere is a photo op and more. If you consider that the last eruption here was in 1790, it seems like yesterday.

Lava grows
We’ve been up here when the temperature was in the 30’s, but on this day, the low 60’s were delightful.

The caldera...

Mountains of the moon?
The power of nature is always awesome wherever you encounter it… it is truly in your face here!

Life in the rocks...
To see vegetation so far above the tree line, is truly breathtaking.

Another look at the caldera...
Yeah, the hits just keep on coming!

One great shot after another...

Looking down from 10,000 feet
What a great day Sunday was. Yesterday our Fur Peace Ranch On The Road began and we have been able to invite our creative souls with the sound of the ocean gently rolling in the background. Every now and then a whale breaches and a cheer goes up from the beach.
Good times!

Another glorious day bids us goodbye...

Sometimes you have to make the best of where you are… and sometimes where you are… is the best!
Onward!
Great game last night – especially if you were a Patriots fan. Action packed right up until the very end.
Football sort of viscerally hits me like the game of the automatic war crowd…The gladiators…

Baseball is my game,don’t really follow football
Except for the Super Bowl, love playing the pool.
Tonight I had Falcons 8, Patriot 4
A cool 5k win, sorely needed.
Can’t quite explain it
But every time I play Victoria I want to get up and dance
And I don’t Ever dance
But I do love me some Kinks
but
Wishing I was down there! It’s freezing here on Long Island.
@Brian Doyle
Maybe if we play it up enough we can get Jorma and Jack to play down here. Right now everything is green and the crickets are chirping. 66* at night.
Forgot to mention Crosby Stills Nash and Young did Denny Sarokin’s song ‘Sanibel’.
Spent numerous tropical vacations on Sanibel Island. It’s one of my fave places in the country. It’s down in Florida off the Gulf Coast near Fort Myers. Sanibel is a laid back tropical gem. Some of the best shelling in the world. Good times.
@Brian Doyle
Wish I could make that show. Out of personal neglect and budget I’ve never seen Jorma play. Shows like this are like a comfortable pair of old shoes for us too and sometimes the only way to connect with an almost sacred thing to us that recedes to a vanishing horizon with each passing year…
Someone mentioned Mauna Kea up above – that’s the Big Island.
Embryonic Journey is so woven into our lives – such an iconic piece. Amazing that it was your first!
Nice pics. Great scenery.
Beautiful pictures Jorma .I had the good fortune to visit there in 1981 and again in 1985 .Hope you enjoy every second in paradise .Peace
Wow.

I video-ed Denny Sarokin doing his song ‘Sanibel’ live at the Sanibel Community Center January 30 2017. It was part of the showing of a Florida fresh water documentary my uncle Larry Doyle and David Carter presented:

speaking of SF, the fillmore show is just 2 short weeks away!! As many times as I have seen Hot Tuna, I still get that pre-show anticipation and excitement. Really looking forward to this show!!
Just imagine – Jorma’s first song was Embryonic Journey.
That’s just incredible!
Roads and Roads is one of my faves – great cd.
@rich l
“High upon a mountain top
Fortress thick and bonded,
Thoughts about a brighter day
Together in the sun” – Roads and Roads
I sure would love to hear that song live someday!
@Richard
Yep and tomorrow we are going to get tickets to the benefit show in Brooklyn!
Beautiful pictures…especially the sun sets. Caught a beautiful one tonight in SC. Haven’t been to Hawaii in many years, since I left SF. Your pictures bring back a lot of great memories.
🙂
@Ham n Eggs
Thanks for sharing, that was nice.
Jorma, was Embryonic Journey really the first piece of music you ever wrote? That was the song that really got me deep into JA, wasn’t very aware of JA in the 60’s except for the hits on the radio, heard Embyonic Journey in the mid 70’s and that’s when I really delved into the old catalog. I always found the songs written by you were the ones that grabbed me and really stuck to my soul, and that led me to the Hot Tuna material. It’s been the soundtrack of my life ever since.
It was my first piece… 1963 I believe.
@Andy K
Thanks, Andy. Don’t get me started…
Presale for the Staten Island show is working..Just got 7th row..Yeah man..cant wait..
@carey georgas
Glad to see you are OK.
You’re in Texas, right? I thought you might have been run over by the stampede of 3 Million illegals that streamed across the Mexican border to vote in November. 🙂
Keep those sunsets coming! Haleakala is indeed a rare and beautiful place. Excellent photos from the summit. I gotta check on gettin’ me a golden pass.
Spectacular
If I might make a suggestion, while you’re there you might take the trip up to the observatory on Mauna Kea. It is the state of the art. Can’t go in, but the view of the night sky, plus the sunset, is worth it. Get Izze excited by astronomy. We did it and my kids love it. Dress warmly – it’s 14,000 feet up.
I hope you and your family have a blast, Jorma. See you guys at FPR this summer I hope
All the best
Thanks for the pictures. Spectacular! Really nice – from 10,000 feet!
