Fifteen years ago, my friend Jerry and I rode Rt. 66 from Santa Monica to Jackson and Lakeshore in Chicago. I’m sure glad we did it!
With a second driver so we could drive home without stopping we got home in Ohio on Thursday morning.

Jorma, almost finish reading your autobiography. I read slowly and make notes of places , people and those things read about and need to do research of them to learn more. I learn more about these things and it is very good for my knowledge. Every person who is not registered to vote, please do this because the mid term elections are very important this year. I make a p.s. to “ Carlo pagliono” to get well soon. Barbara will be for business in Milan soon and she will bring you the chicken soup. I live in her apartment while she lives in Europe and she close the email account but she forget to take your email address from it. She has that with your contact information in her apartment but I can’t find it. If you want to give here I will send to her.

The Dan Lynch bar. Great “old man bar” to catch live blues. Was a regular stop ,back in the day,when in the neighborhood. 12th and 2nd I believe, just around the corner from the Old Academy of Music. Good times!
A quick Lone Star Roadhouse story: Had many a great night seeing Hot Tuna, Jorma solo, “Jack and Friends” etc. I used to like to get there early as to grab a table right up front and see the sound check. The best one however was in 1991. We had just got married the day before in NYC City Hall and Donna and I went to the show. I got to introduce her to Jorma during the sound check and he was gracious enough to chat with us and then brought over his guitar to the table and played Embryonic for us. Something we will never forget. Later he dedicated it to us and played it to end the first set. Don’t get much better than that.
How bout Living Just For You. Man, I had not heard that live in decades until I heard it at Fur Peace this past March. Front row too. Very, very tight. Beautiful melody. Descending line, nursery rhyme. Sharp ending. Props to Justin all the way thru. Cream would have done it no better. beatles packed as much in 3 min 20 seconds..
Hey, we were lucky in NY to have Jorma and Jack pass thru so often. Even better now that the Dude acknowledges G-D.
I went to Vanessa after the close of the first set and said, “my Lord, what a treat. It was sublime Vanessa. l leaned into her a bit. I havn’t seen Electric Hot Tuna in a long, long time”
She said,”what have you been living under a rock? Go buy a hamburger.” No kidding. That’s how it went down. She was pitching hamburgers, and I was sharing my joy… She could relate. She had a sweet smile as she pointed out the grill. Needless to say I was pretty excited…Might not have heard it since the mid 70s, and then BOOM!!!!!!!!!! Living Just For You

Last show I saw was electric HT at the Huntington on LI back in December—hadn’t heard Roads & Roads electric since the Jorma/Vital Parts days, and that’s way too many moons.

One night at the Lone Star, it was well after 2 AM and Jorma (solo) was still playing, my brother and I made our way through the crowd and out the revolving door and as we stumbled onto the sidewalk, a girl dressed as a vampire was entering through the revolving door.
The uncanny thing was that Jorma was playing Vampire Women while she entered!

Ah, the old Lone Star…loved the Iguana up on the roof. Saw many JK shows there, including an acoustic version of TGTN with Rashied Ali, Steve Sacher (replacing Jaco) and a couple other guys (10/2/85). Always an enthusiastic audience…as Jorma remarked late one night (or early one morning), “It’s always cerebral at the Lone Star”. And a guaranteed long show; on more than a few occasions I’d get back to my apartment between 3 and 4 AM, catch a couple hours of sleep and head to work. Those were different times indeed.

I loved the show .Tuna was great i laughed and believed Jorma when he said early in the 1st set that he was exhausted .The boys had a real 3 day grind and played as good as i expected ,.My son loved it and sitting 5th row in that theatre was a treat .Would have loved to meet up as well as meet Jorma but my trip and the show were perfect .thanks John and a wishes to all whom are celebrating Yom Kippur .Peace always to all here ..

I saw Randy Hansen at the Lone Star somewhere around 1980 – I can’t remember…Randy is a Jimi Hendrix imitator…Texas is the Lone Star state and I guess that was the theme…And since everything is bigger in Texas they had a giant dragonfly hanging from the ceiling in front of the stage that was like 10 feet long…She’s my little rock n roll…Gonna shock it to your shoulder…BTW, I kind of agree with Johno’s views towards the military in America…I think they got it right in the 60’s..No offense intended…New York is suffering generational change…When I visited I looked for the Dan Lynch bar east of the Village…I walked and walked thinking “How could I miss that thing?” only to realize it was replaced by a soul-less sports bar…Dan Lynch’s was cool…It had a cheap pool table and the best funky live bands…I think I saw the Holmes Brothers there…Back in 1991 I played a cat in a winter jacket with his hood zipped up and his face covered by that green tunnel with fur on the end of the zipped up hood…He was OK but I beat him…Thought the cat was strange covering his face like that when playing pool but I just wanted to beat him…Didn’t need to see him…A few weeks later I was at Dan Lynch’s and overheard two regulars talking…One of them described how Bob Dylan had the habit of stopping in every now and then and playing a game of pool with his face hidden by his hood…
The Lone Star days were important because they were at a time in the mid 80’s when Hot Tuna had stopped touring. There was the Lone Star – a country music joint on Fifth Avenue in Greenwich Village where Jorma would come and play. Once in a while Jack would accompany Jorma and we had Hot Tuna. Many a late night at the old Lone Star.
I was there also .I found the jam to be very progressive .
Really enjoyed that Lone Star Cafe show, with Jorma, Jaco and friends, and if memory serves me, Rashied Ali on drums. Hope somebody recorded it.

Looks like we’ll be getting the remnants of Florence blowing thru here in the Catskills tomorrow. Hope we don’t lose too many leaves. They expect high winds and a lot of rain. I loved spending my spring and summer upstate in the country. Living in the country I was able to get closer to myself. I am grateful for the opportunity to slow down and meditate on what’s really important. For me the country is a lot like what heaven will be like. It’s going to be beautiful – and nothing will hurt.
Hey, ya’ll. I’m in Playa de Coco, Costa Rica visiting some friends. Watched a sunset over the Pacific yesterday. Only one word I could think of to describe it: “Boofah!” (sic?).
Saw a great show in Tucson at the Rialto on the 10th! Picked up my 8 year old son from school earlier that afternoon and headed downtown around 3 to hang out a little with him and ran into Jorma. Since I teach, Aidan said he got to meet a “teacher’s teacher.” Fun stuff! Thanks for taking the time to talk to my son Jorma, you’re a true gentleman, and for signing the book to him as well as me, as it will be his some day. I also really liked the part in the book about the Rolex, which we discussed briefly at the ranch when I was there in May, as I have my Dad’s now. After reading the book, I decided he’ll also get his grandpa’s rolex to walk in his graduation ceremony. Aidan also got to meet Steve, who hails from one of my old homes, Bethlehem, Pa., when we stopped in Chicago Store. What a day! I wonder if Steve ever bought the lap steel???

nothing turned me into a guiar freak more than hearing ‘hesitation blues’ on my classmate’s older brother’s copy of ‘flight log’ c. 1979. i’ve been attending your shows regularly ever since. i read your book cover-to-cover today. i couldn’t put it down. i did have one question. in reference to jaco at the lone star, you wrote ‘i think it was dr. john.’ could it have been the new orleans radiators? i was in new york that week, and i saw three gigs at the lone star. you were one of them (and loud as hell) and the other two were the rads. jaco turned up at least twice. on one evening, he left with my buddy , and they stayed up all night doing coke. i wonder whether his unclad escape might have been the other night.

Justin Guip is an excellent drummer. Imagine traveling and playing with Hot Tuna. It must be so exciting for him. He fits right in with Jack and Jorma. Not too loud and not too soft. He is perfect.
Finished the book yesterday – I just couldn’t wait. What a book! Who would have thought Jorma would write a blockbuster of a book. Great job! Thanks for the CD. We are the luckiest fans alive. Thanks Jorma.

Such a great show at the Rialto! I bought in early so I got one of the best seats in the house about 15 feet from Jack. I knew before getting there I’d be seeing the best rock bass player in the world in addition to two great pickers but I must say I was really impressed with the drummer. He was right where he was supposed to be, did not resort to unnecessary and distracting embellishments and showed off only when he was given the nod. He did exactly what he was supposed to do.
