High point in the neighborhood
Foto by Jorma Kaukonen
except for this cathedral shot, i didn’t take any picks around the neighborhood surrounding the Crest. The street scene was like something from Fear The Living Dead. Rats and drug addled street people. I felt bad, but I didn’t want to be there. Inside the theater was a different story.

Beautifully restored...and a fine place to play!

From Vegas a dash to Scottsdale, where it was 90 degrees Fahrenheit at 9 in the morning. Yikes.

Another hang with some great folks to sign books.

I love these people!

And then a short ride to Tucson where we will play tomorrow at the Rialto Theater. We were last here some years ago with Leon Russell. I miss that guy.
Bed time… hope this air conditioner works.
@AndyK Indeed !! Thank you Andy
@Mitch Spector
Two thumbs up!
Hot Tuna !! Still “AMERICA’S CHOICE ..Happy Friday ..
America hates its crazies…
@Tom Fabry
I got to see them once at the Academy of Music on 14th St. What energy and fun!
@Tom Fabry
Fingers crossed, legs too. In fact, I’m a pretzel!
@AndyK
And the times are certainly a changin… He who is first will be last and the last will be first.
Pray for the folks in path of the storm. The storm in DC and the smaller one in N and S Carolina.
All will be well…. Trust and have hope
@AndyK They recorded that one over three nights, I was so close I could put my chin on the stage for one of those nights. I figure I got one or two whoops in on the album somewhere, but I have a rather indistinct whoop and have never been able to pick myself out of the crowd.
But boy, did I have some fun!
@carey georgas
One of my favorite albums was recorded at Armadillo World Headquarters….”live from deep in the heart of Texas, Commander Cody & the Lost Planet Airmen”
Enjoyed seeing Bill Kirchen- The master of the telecaster – play w Jorma and the Boyz at Jorma’s 70th B’day Bash.
Did a great version of Dylan’s Times They Are A Changin’
Goin’ back to Main Street Crossing, where I saw Jorma, on Oct. 1 to see Michael Martin Murphy. Hopin’ to take a ride in Geronimo’s Cadillac. He’s one I got to see back in the salad days at the dawn of the Cosmic Cowboy phenomenon. At the Armadillo World Headquarters, no less.
Caught the On the roof episode last night Loved it .Great interview ,Enjoyed the show and learned a few more very cool things .Hope all is well for all here on this awesome Blog .Peace and love ! Thanks Jorma
Good you got to see Grace…Sometimes in those still moments of time people become precious …If Jorma thinks El Rey was killer that’s where I would have teleported in another reality…They get a nice constant 72 degrees in those desert “Earthships”…
Granted, I traveled from NC to Sacramento earlier that day and was of questionable mind, but I’m pretty sure that the second half at The Crest went down like this:
1. Been So Long
2. That’ll Never Happen No More
3. Roads and Roads &
4. Watch The North Wind Rise
5. Sleep Song with Steve
6. In The Kingdom with Steve
7. Hesitation Blues with Steve
8. Walking Blues with Steve
9. Hit Single # 1 with Steve
10. Funky #7 with Steve
11. Encore: Rock Me Baby with Steve
Having a great time reading your book. I read a chapter or two each night. So far the book is amazing. I don’t want to rush through it – it’s that good. How you remembered all of the details of your incredible life is unbelievable. Getting good – when Hot Tuna was being formed. Thanks for the ride.
You guys are covering a lot of ground on this tour. It is really exciting to read about this from far away. So many nice theaters.
Boy I wish I coulda been at the El Rey.
Sounds like one for the ages.
I’m a slow reader. Loving your book. I just got to the where you could SEE the music, and driving up the 17 at dawn.
Yah buddy.
I’m glad I’m sober. Like you said to me not too long ago… “Without that, none of this is possible”.
Indeed sir.
Safe travels Hot Tuna!!!
Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk. Great choice of stars you picked to post from the walk of fame.
May sweet things come in the new year.
And speaking of the other New Year…
WOW! Hot Tune Acoustic/Electric New Year’s Eve in Berkeley, CA
Wish I was a Californian, but I’m not complaining as I have acoustic in Albany and Electric in NYC to look forward to 🙂
Fantastic show at the Crest! And yes, the walking dead roam the streets, but next time you’re here would be thrilled to show you the fantastic parts of Sacramento including the American River bike trail, 32 miles of fun and beauty. Also, perhaps I was in lala land, but didn’t I hear Walking Blues played that night? Not on your set list. Eternal smiles of gratitude, please return to the City of Trees soon!!!
Happy Rosh Hashanah Jorma! I caught two shows during the last little electric run (Portland and Los Angeles) and both were great! The L.A. show was particularly great… the place was packed and I sensed a different energy both from both the crowd and yourselves at the El Rey vs the Portland show.
I’m also loving your book and something really rang a bell with me about addiction. I used to not be able to travel anywhere without weed. I used to devise devious ways of transporting it. Like empyting out fiber pills and putting the herb in the empty capsules. Which used to take quite some time. (Nowadays I need the fiber)! It was unthinkable not to travel with it even though it was illegal back then and I was taking a chance. I’ve since given it up and find it very freeing not to have to worry about things like that.
I was at the Vegas show. Hadn’t seen the boys in awhile since they hadn’t hit Vegas in awhile and was thrilled to see them on the schedule here. I took my son who happily agreed to come with me and we both had a great time. He is now the proud owner of a great t shirt (The famous “if you don’t know Jorma…) and it will be worn on his college campus. The legend goes on. The show? Wow, so much fun. I am amazed at how the whole band is just so good and so powerful and so gentle all at the same time. Steve Kimock lends a great touch and a different feel to the band. Thank you Jorma, Jack, Steve and Justin for such a fine evening out. Safe travels:)
L’Shana Tovah to the Kaukonen family. Health and happiness for 120 years!
Jorma, come to Souh Florida for Shabbat. Bring the fam…we can have a shabboton!
Wow! Flew from South Florida to Vegas and boy was that shlep worth it! It’s possible that the show in Vegas was one of, if not the best, Hot Tuna shows ever….and I’ve been seeing them for 41 years…since I’m 16! Steve Kimock added something spectacular to the already perfect band. Best Good Shepard I’ve ever seen or heard!
What fun it is being a middle aged groupie! More fun than being a teenaged groupiie! Must be the money thing.
Thanks again guys for another stellar evening . Sad you wont be returning to Jamaica this winter. So neither will I .
Just finished the book, Been so Long and loved it. I always said to myself, while reading your blog, that you’re a great writer and should write a book! And so you have
Had a great time at the show .My son enjoyed it .Hope the rest of the tour go’s well. Coming to Ohio for the November 2nd dinner at F.P.R .Going to celebrate my brothers 68th b-day Nov 1st and bringing him with me. .Been looking for a chance to visit F.P.R .Psyched .Peace always !! Thank you Jorma !
Sad about the Sacramento scene outside the theater. Sadder still: how common that seems to be these days wherever one goes.
