Back at the Ranch, last weekend we had Ramblin’ Jack Elliot and Al Petteway. Jack and I have been friends for quite a few years now and after last weekend I count Al as one of my new best friends, and what a show he put on.

In the spirit of making every day count in some way, I’ve been cleaning up stuff down at the old A-Frame. My parents couldn’t get rid of a lot of this stuff before the passed… so now it’s finally up to me. It’s tough, but it’s getting done.
I think I’ll take a break and go into town.

In this day and age, it’s not so much who you vote for, but who you vote against. A wise old co-worker once told me his voting philosophy – he said he votes against whoever is in office. Once they get entrenched, they start serving themselves.
Could Abraham Lincoln get elected in this day and age?

While it is true that in order to get far in politics, candidates make many bad compromises. However, there are still very real differences among them on issues that matter. Our democracy is capable of change, albeit incrementally. For example, campaign contribution reforms are possible, but won’t happen if we don’t vote.

Please don’t discount your vote. I don’t like to hear folks say, why vote it really doesn’t count for anything anyway. If it truly didn’t count, why is the GOP so intent on purging voters from the rolls?
I prefer the war the 60’s generation started…If I vote faithfully I am probably going to get good cop bad cop alternatives that do almost nothing to change what I dislike the most…If candidates get to the election level they have almost certainly been screened so they will guarantee the status quo…We have certain powers in the country that are not affected what so ever by election outcomes…If the vote I wish to make were actually effective it would be one for no confidence and a major reworking of our political system…My life experience in American is I am encouraged to vote and when I do it is exploited and considered approval of the things that then turn around and screw me for one more round…America is a process of the public asking for more than is possible in reality and politicians promising it…
I can very much relate with the having to deal with the post mortem parental debris. Mom passed three years ago and I still feel like I’m just getting started. At least you have a spare A-Frame for warehousing purposes. The “Jerry” cup down there belongs in the museum.

Jorma, I was partly responding to the purported Abe Lincoln quote above.
Sometimes, maybe more than sometimes, a nation or group of people get the leaders they “deserve”. Majority rules doesn’t always yield the best results. That was my main point. One very good example is the Dred Scott decision here in America. Another example was the vote in 1932 Germany.
Sometimes the masses can get ginned up, and may be easily mislead. That is what I was addressing. The story of Pilate’s wife’s dream is unknown to many, so I thought I would share that. The Jewish and other friends of the Jewish carpenter and Rabbi Jesus, were drowned out by the mob.
I believe God can work through dreams. Remember Daniel’s work with the dreams of Nebuchadnezzar, or Joseph’s Dreams, Genesis 37:1-11.
I do vote, early, and then grab a coffee. Hope and pray for the best.

@Tom Fabry Is there a metaphor hiding in there somewhere? My understanding of the story is that Pilate only allowed a voice vote to get either the monkey, his wife, or both off his back.
As for men behind the curtain, in my opinion we must not let the orange haired one continue to erode confidence in our institutions. Our elections are the cleanest in the world, and we should give thanks, not have doubt.
As I’ve aged from my hippie days, I like to think my ideology has not changed, but has been tempered by reality. The conspiracies of my youth have turned out to be a realization of the vagaries of human nature. I believe in human exceptionalism, not American exceptionalism. The American democratic system, as flawed as it may be, still allows human exceptionalism the best conditions under which to flourish. Just go vote!
Wasn’t it a vote, among other things, that put Jesus Christ on the cross? Just sayin…For those forgetful or unaware, Pontius Pilate’s wife had a dream and she then reported to Pilate to have nothing to do with this man, Jesus.
“While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: ‘Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.’ (Matthew 27:19).
Soon after there was something like a vote where the people chose whether to free Jesus or Barabus.
I will vote on Tuesday too. Just hope there are no men behind the curtain manipulating the tally.

People have died for the right to vote. It’s our responsibility to preserve democracy by exercising that right.
