As Jews Nessa and I were encouraged to go to services this Shabbat and, among other things, show solidarity for the victims and the families of the Tree Of Life Congregation in Pittsburgh. For a number of reasons this was not in the cards for out family but it is always in the cards to perform acts of service and ours was the two mile stretch of SR 681 that we have adopted as a site to clean.

Rick, got us involved in the highway cleanup over a decade ago and he is getting ready to leave the area but we shall carry on the tradition. Brenda and our own John Hurlbut from the Fur Peace Ranch joined us as well as Andy from Athens… who brought doughnuts. To show up on a chilly Saturday morning to help pick up the incredible detritus that people empty from their cars is amazing indeed.

It’s the little things we can do that really make a difference. Talk is cheap… I know, because I do plenty of it. It was more than a pleasure hanging with friends over bags of trash containing stuff you don’t even want to know about.

We were done by eleven… it was a Saturday morning well spent!

As Martin Mull once said, “I used to be plastic, now I’m elastic, I’m flexible.” I say this at the grocery store when they ask me if I want paper or plastic -generally get a smile out of the check out person and bagger.@Tom Fabry

I saw The J Geils Band at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago in 1974 or 75. A great show. Peter Wolf was the quintessential front man.

(Actually, my first Hot Tuna show was at The Auditorium a couple years before that.)@Chappy

Fine example of rubber meeting road (pun intended). We can holler about all the polluters, fear the environmental deregulations, or do something about it. Even if it’s something as simple as composting, all the little things add up to something greater than the sum of the parts. Way to lead by example, Jorma.

I recall a TV ad years ago wherein someone threw trash out the window of a passing car. It landed at the feet of an American Indian, who then had his eyes tear.
    Very powerful.
The common $50 fine is not enough of a deterrent and I can’t recall hearing of someone getting a ticket. There should be a greater emphasis on this quality of life issue (along with banning spam calls!).
In the meantime, right on Jorma and all those doing more than their part to help!

Here is a book with some ideas to consider. The author tried to go 1 year w/out negatively impacting the environment.

Every couple of days when I take our trash out, I am astonished and embarrassed by the amount of waste two people produce. Plastic packaging is the worst of it. We need better solutions. And we must reduce, reuse, recycle. I’d emphasize “reduce” in particular.

Plastic. So much plastic. Made from oil and sometimes we fight wars and bury loved ones for oil. One step we can all make is use less ourselves. Even metal decomposes over time, but not so w plastic. The oceans are filling up w plastic. We eat fish with plastic in it. I read one statistic that w every meal we eat out, we consume plastic. Thanks to you and all who do that! I just can’t understand why people throw stuff out of their car windows instead of simply waiting until they’re home or arrive at a place with a trash can. I see people do this and if I pull up along side them, I shake my finger and ask if they throw stuff out their windows at home. It really bothers me. So rude and pointless.

I often think that the companies that sell “on the go” type food and drink should print a message on there items. “You bought it, you own it”….then throw your 4 dollar cup of coffee in the trash. Love your work Jorma, on and off stage. Peace

Sad to see/hear that people still litter. That said, thanks to you and the team for pitching in. I recall reading an interview with Pete Townsend some years back where he was reflecting on one thing or another and he said that if you see trash on the road then pick it up! Looking forward to the two final shows of the year at FPR: Magic Dick and Hot Tuna, respectively. The J. Geils Band did certainly rock the crowd back in the day and Magic Dick contributed greatly. Speaking of J. Geils Band, I was listening to one of Peter Wolf’s solo albums recently “Sleepless.” It’s a great album with FPR favorite Larry Campbell all over it!
