The Songwriting Gentlemen

Last week we hosted a songwriting workshop here at the Sundial Beach Resort in Sanibel. I never cease to be humbled by the passion and honesty that all our students in Songwriting Workshops manifest. Every writer in this year’s gaggle of guys (no ladies this session for some reason) really rose to the occasion. It was an exciting week for me! After the wrap up Friday morning John H. and I took the moments to do some walking, swimming and relaxing!

We found ourselves walking three to four miles a day which to many might not be much… but it was a move forward for me!

Weather is well… weather. As the air temps rose, the juxtaposition with the cooler water made for a deep fog.

It is Monday today and our students are coming in for a week long master class. I look forward to all my classes, but this one should be really fun!

Speaking of the Allmans…imagine a boxset of the January 1971 double bill at the fillmore west with electric hot tuna and the allman bros band..the poster for that is amazing indeed.

I participate in a collective of sorts on FB, the King Tut Vintage Album and Cassette Museum of Jacksonville, where every day for 4 years, a different album was discussed among folks who visited the site. Its no longer daily; new Exhibits are posted more sporadically now. But all of the album discussions, are there for your enjoyment if you’re inclined. It was the best it can get at this time of the year the last few days…80, blue sky, low humidity…Honored to have met the man…A real gentleman…Speaks to you like and old friend…A ‘real’ person…
Looks like you hit a nice stretch of weather on Sanibel. I wish I was there. They say that pirates used to ply their trade in the backwaters just east of Sanibel.

Buy it! Worth the price just to hear Outskirts of Town. Shades of Stormy Monday in there. Sound is pretty good. Complaining about it would be to me like bitching about an Alan Lomax recording sounding like it was done on an old antique reel to reel recorder. We talkin’ history here!

I also immenselycenjoyed the pre- Hot Tuna disc and was giving serious thought to also buying the ABB disc. I noted there were differing reviews of the sound quality. Would be interested in hearing how it compared to that of Before We Were Them.
Just got my copy of Before We Were Them I ordered from FPR. Ah, the good old days, free form and high flyin’! Sure am enjoying it. I also went to Owsley Stanley Foundation website and bought the Allman Brothers Live at Fillmore East done a year before the eponymous Live at The Fillmore was recorded. It’s next in the queue. I also dropped a $50 donation on them, because the restorations are done on a donation only basis. It seemed a worthwhile use of my money, restoring very unique soundtracks of our lives before they degrade into the eternal mist.
I’ve taken many worthwhile classes at FPR, but the songwriters workshops were perhaps the most beneficial to me personally. When I think of Sanibel Island I am reminded of Jean Shepherd, my favorite raconteur, who passed away around twenty years. I had a discussion once with Roy Bookbinder about him – he left an impact on both of us. Great place for creative vibe.

Four miles is some pretty good hoofing, especially if you’re walking on sand. From the beauty captured in your photos, I”ll bet time and space kind of separate from each other as you hike. Some of the best medicine I know of for clearing the mind and calming the spirit. Have a good week.
What a great place to be in February. Usually spend a week or two in the Sanibel area almost every winter. Can’t go this year because my wife needs to have an operation on her foot this week. But I miss the beaches, the shells and the sunsets. I think that the Sanibel area is one of the most beautiful places in the country. Sure miss it this year. Glad to see that you’re enjoying yourself.
