I-70 Somewhere in Eastern Colorado

I-70 Somewhere in Eastern Colorado

Fueling up this morning on I-70 I got out of the bus to watch the sun rise and it occurred to me that although I have complained about many things in my life, being on the road is not one of them. Maybe it’s growing up in a nomadic family from WWII to when I left home… who knows? I love my time at home with my family and I more than appreciate their everlasting tolerance of my wanderlust, but there is always something waiting down the road. Like Gretchen Peters says in one of her songs… ‘Heading where ‘the blacktop turns to blue.’

Yeah…

I even kind of like the smell of fuel...

Several years ago, David Bromberg did a solo show at Knuckleheads. He played for a bit, leaned in to the mike, opened his mouth, and a perfectly timed whistle blew. He looked up and said “Everybody’s a critic”.
This happened a few times, just as he was about to sing. There’s actually a short video of this, without his comment but with laughter,on youtube.

Just got that travelin’ bone, is all. The marvel is how you can keep a foot firmly planted in both worlds and be equally successful. Kudos.

Can’t tell you how many great road trips I have taken with both wives and friends to Hot Tuna and Jorma solo shows over these many years. Some of the best times ever and have been able to see and experience much beauty and history of this country. Just a great bonus to the music. Though the road trips are shorter today, they are no less enjoyable and all things considered I am grateful we can all still do it.

“Gonna hit the road, start lookin for the end of that long white line…”

Red Rocks was one of the truly amazing places I’ve visited for shows (another is the Lime Kiln in VA). Got to see CS&N and the same week, the first of the several Last Tours of the Doobie Bros.
    Safe travels, m

    Jorma,

I travel for a living, too. I get it when you say you enjoy the road and home time with family. Those feelings are not mutually exclusive.
