Our Labyrinth from the air
Drone shot by Jorma Kaukonen
While we were waiting for Paul, Fred, Kenny and Gabe to show up there was a break in the endless rain we’ve been having and I took the opportunity to put the bird up.

Bird's eye view of the station

They were running a wee late, so I just kept on flying.

In control... for once.

Then the boys showed up… and so did the sold out crowd!

Yup, the lot was full!

We had been trying to get these guys for a decade, and it was worth the wait!

The men rock the Station!

The sleek, stripped down Funky Feat delivered the goods in spades!

Fred's got my Jazzmaster and Paul has one of Myron's Strats

Again, so grateful the guys spent two days with us!

I got to sit in on Dixie Chicken and Spanish Moon… Thanks guys… for everything!
Back in my little world our Espresso machine was on the fritz. I talked to the folks at Whole Latte Love. ‘It’s the solenoid,’ the tech said, and he emailed me instructions. I ordered the part and it came the other day. There are more tiny little parts in this machine than Carter has Little Liver Pills.

Teeny, tiny parts... and lots of them.

I took pictures at every step of the disassembly so I could reverse the process. It worked!

Mmmmm.... java, java

A fine week indeed…

The ROK unit is awesome! Check the link. This is not a stove top boiler… and it’s all billet!

Rock Them All High Tonight Jorma!
Rock Them All Hot Tonight Jorma!
Jorma, I have just read your brief “interview” printed in the recent edition of “AAA World”. Hopefully you are taking some satisfaction or comfort that, after all the years and experiences, there remains much interest from many different different directions in your experiences and accomplishments, past and present. We met after the Hot Tuna concert at the City Winery in DC late last year. In signing your book for me, we referenced being “members of the tribe”. Ongoing success and best wishes to you, your family and also Jack C. -AEG, Sterling, Virginia
freshly ground and French press…. my only vice. perfecto!
On “The Simpsons,” Chief Wiggum threw patrolman Lou’s ass in the slammer because Lou got him an “ice” coffee when Wiggum had wanted a “nice coffee.”
Try Bustello “Cuban Style” with Molasses and then frothed. Donna makes it this way for me if I ask nice
My wife Beatrice is a real coffee drinker,me I am just one cup in the mourning but I like it strong..We have been enjoying Bustello for a few years now..
@greg
How bout a nice coffee with and after breakfast and with the after breakfast part, enjoy a nice organic American Spirit… Just 1 or 2 a week.
Had a first Cappuccino in Rome, at a cafe on Via Nazionale,…..I hear there is a Jorma/Tuna following in Italy.
Rolling Thunder.
Sun comes to New York today and its the longest day of the year….be outside… Thank God
The wartime use of chicory is something I didn’t know. I just thought it was a Louisiana thang. It’s still readily available on local grocery shelves. I’ve only tried it once, at Cafe Du Monde, and it was quite abominable to me. Tasted like coffee with a root ground up in it. Dark roast served black and hot with a touch of sugar for me. Never had a latte, don’t like it cold. Black coffee, freshly ground and fully packed.
Peets(the inspiration for, I daresay…Starbucks) Major Dickason Dark Roast Whole Bean, grounded and brewed black and strong.
There is nothing finer than i fine strong tasty expresso after a delicious dinner!!
100% Kona. There’s no other bean like it.
@carey georgas
Indeed, lots of chicory coffee popular in New Orleans. served many places including Cafe DuMonde. Cans of French Market have chicory. I think it became popular in WWII to stretch available supply of coffee.
I live on the edge of Cajun country, and the Frenchmen, they like their coffee dark, Cher. There’s a regional brand called Seaport that’ll curl your toes. Ever had coffee blended with chicory? Some serious chit, man. If you don’t like it stout, stay away!
Feat’s Don’t Fail Me Now!
Had the pleaseure of seeing them in Boston a winter night few months b4 Lowell left us.
He was sweating profusely and pale. Clearly not well.
Caught up with the rest of the band last year on Staten Island @ the beautiful St. George Theatre.
They haven’t lost a step!
My usual morning choice is Seattle’s Best Post Alley #5 Intense dark and a Bustello in the afternoon. Certainly enjoyed fresh Royal Kona while in Hawaii (brought back a plant, so hopefully I can grow my own. Funny how our horticultural adventures change as we get older). I must admit the coffee at Fur Peace is among the best I have had, but maybe it was the company as well.
@carey georgas
Science may some day prove that one who fixes his or her own coffee machine, actually experiences elevated tasting sensations. Stay tuned.
Also Carey, canonization would take 2 miracles. 1st coffee repair just may qualify for a beatification…. Jorma probably has a few other “miracles” related to his Hog, on stage guitar repairs and jerry rigs, which could push him toward canonization. I heard a story about a sewage line and a bus tranny he was somewhat connected to, but unsure if they qualify to be submitted…..
Good thought on the canonization though… Something we should all aspire to, for prayer is the key to heaven and faith unlocks the door. Jorma does get good points though for example to his friends and audience and also not keeping his light under a bushel…Just sayin’.
Dark Magic by Green Mountain. Very impressed with the k-cups
Lately I have been enjoying Bustello made in my French Press. Its easy and makes a nice strong cup of Coffee. Not quite Espresso but gets the job done. Also good if you don’t have electricity handy but can still make hot water. I may take one on my next road trip
There’s nothing like that first cup in the morning. What is your favorite brand of coffee. Mine is Gevalia. It is rich and smooth and from Scandinavia.
There are many fine coffees and let me start by saying that, quite simply, I love coffee. If all I have is that stuff in the hotel… so be it. I’ll drink it with full appreciation. Give my druthers, I’d druther have whole beans ground by me right before I brew that magic beverage. Chicory might have been a necessity in wartime, but to me today it’s an abomination. Black and strong, that’s perfect!
Summer fun Jorma ..Peace
You got that right, brother. I got one you just set on the stove and let percolate. Not quite as fast, but it makes an espresso fit for espresso lovers. I’ll have to look into doing my own roasting. Wish I could grow the bean here. That’d be fun to try.
I would venture that fixing a consumer class espresso machine would qualify as a miracle when considering one’s canonization for Tinkerer’s sainthood. Takes do it yourself to another plane in my humble opinion.
make that Aeropress
I’m with Rick Quinn… without espresso there is no life. Missed the FEAT tix tho. BTW control (even with a drone) is essentially unmanageable LOL.
Wow…Funky Feat were awesome on Saturday night! Had seen LF a few times over the years and they were always great but at large venues so it was too cool to see them in the intimate setting at FPR. The dual lead guitars with Fred and Paul all night was only topped when Jorma made it three! Loved Paul’s great slide playing and Fred Tackett is incredible…got to see him on born-again Bob’s show at the Akron Civic Theatre back in 1980 and whatever one’s feelings were about that tour one thing is for sure and that is his band with Fred, Spooner and Tim Drummond was rocking…solid rocking! Coincidentally or maybe by divine intervention, last week I stumbled across a YT video of Marcus King and Heather Gillis with a great send up of “Spanish Moon” and I’m thinking I may get to hear that tune by FF. So, to have the Captain kick in with Fred and Paul on that one was just plain super! Took the opportunity to visit my 91 yr old Mom in Cleveland on Sunday. Tuned in to the show that night via the livestream after we had dinner. Half way through the FF’s first set she said to me “that’s very nice music!” Yes, Mom…yes indeed! She’s still on her game!
Earl Bailey on Deep Tracks Sirius radio played “Sweet Papa John” on Fathers day and said Johnny wrote it about Papa John Creach. Anyone hear that before? I always assumed it to about himself.
Nice job on the espresso machine. A true renaissance man.
Jorma, one word AREOPRESS
Had one for years… Rachel Price and I bonded over the Aeropress in 2015. I have the Baratza Mill in house, the hand mill for the Aeropress on the road and the ROK hand powered Espesso unit for the bus. I also roast my own beans when I have the time. Real coffee is not for sissies. 🙂
Jorma, playing with Feat is ok, but fixing the coffee machine is beyond awesome. I am truly impressed.
OT: I am planning a (potentially solo) road-trip to the Ranch for the Arts and Minds fest on July 20. It looks like it will be a great weekend on music, food and art.
I am wondering if anyone from the NJ/Pa/NY area are considering the run. I am putting out a call for any guys or gals who would like to ride-share down and back. If you would like to hook-up, let me know and we can follow-up off line.

I remember Seeing Rick Danko open for you at the Lone Star Roadhouse singing “Java Blues”
Stopped by a diner, and the blond behind the counter
Asked if she could help in any way
I could tell by her smile, her number I could dial
If I was in the need of company
I asked her for some Java
Instead she brought a cup of chickory
A taste of Java is like a volcanic rush
Nobody’s gonna stop me from drinking too much
Costs many more than you care to pay
But money is nothin, compared to a fired-up day
Don’t try to cheat, it’s impossible to beat
The only pick-me-up that’s here to stay
Java Blues… coffee’s got me
Java Blues… coffee coffee coffee
Java Blues… well the coffee’s got me
Java Blues… coffee coffee coffee
You know that I’ll stay high
Drinkin coffee till I die
Java blues
Carters Little Liver Pills- just showing your age again-they stopped calling them liver pills in the 60’s although thinking about it with all the self liver abuse I’m certain that me as well as other Tuna fans have done to ourselves over the years, we could probably all use a good liver pill about now. Did you fix the Espresso machine?. I don’t have too many vices left but a good cup of coffee better yet espresso always hits the spot. As Kids and teens we used to laugh at my Father who regularly frequently used “old timey” and “corny” expressions and sayings but as I am now verging on becoming a “senior citizen” I find myself using them more and more. One of my favorites is “now we’re cooking with gas”. How about this rain, I don’t know about Ohio but here in North East PA with all this rain this year it seems like its turning into a rain forest
Jorma I was waiting for you
to post on the Phil shows to
ask u grateful dead questions
Without hijacking another
thread. If you could answer
What is your favorite dead studio
album. I have been listening
to workingman alot now. Not
trying to open a public debate
on workingman vs American Beauty.
Jerry’s steel pedal “phase”
was so short, but so good. It
is haunting in the songs high
time and dire wolf. They
so took their time in the
pacing of high time. Slow
Almost lull you into space
But never wanting anything
More. Also love easy Wind
as I think it’s their best
Blues ever.
On another subject. Been
listening to Doobie Brothers
alot recently, especially
The album captain and me.
Patrick Simmons is such
A good finger pickin guitarist,
its just that the electric
nature of the band was formatted
For small runs of acoustic
Fingerpicking acoustic.
In case I missed old news
do Pat Simmons and yourself
Have musical history as I
Have read from him that you
Are an influence? Has he
Ever taught at the ranch?
