Wishbone Ash with Andy Powell fronting Bob Skeat on bass, Joe Crabtree on drums and Mark Abrahams on guitar mesmerized a full house last Saturday at the Fur Peace Ranch. The music was as fresh as it was well… a long time ago. This is heady stuff and Andy and the guys really laid it down for us. Andy invited me up for the encore, a rousing rendition of Jimmy Reed’s ‘Baby What You Want Me To Do?” Always an existential question and always fun to play. Nothing like a slow shuffle.

Spring has finally truly sprung here in Southeast Ohio and I’ve had a chance to get in two motorcycle rides this week. For me, there’s nothing like a good ride to clear the head and put things into perspective. Perhaps I’ll even get in another one before this weekend at the Fur Peace Ranch with me and G.E.Smith.
I know this one is going to be a great hang!

He used to play on Saturday nights in a bar in Canada. He only played inbetween periods because The hockey Night game of the week took precedence over that Edmund Fitzgerald stuff!

Any Gordon Lightfoot fans out there? He’s touring this summer on his 80th Birthday Tour with a stop at Bethel Woods. He was always one of my favorites. I got my tix. Getting ready to move back to my country house up in the woods soon. I can’t wait. It wasn’t a bad winter on Long Island. Not much snow.

Funny thing happened today. I checked the Bethel Woods website and they just listed John Fogerty and Special Guests on Sunday August 18th. Which is another Woodstock 50 year Anniversary weekend at the original site of Woodstock in Bethel NY. Could one of those special guests be Hot Tuna. If Woodstock 50 in Watkins Glen is cancelled – Tuna would be available on August 18th. It’d be great.

Psilocybin Mushrooms one and all—I dropped many types of acid, to include liquid drops from the Jester himself—and would take the ‘shrooms any day.
Hot Tuna came to Franklin Pierce College in November 1976 (22 November to be exact—Tunabase has the date and venue, but no set list). Shrooms were all over the place that night — the campus of 1,100 students was electrified by that and Hot Tuna doing what they did in those days (five hour show with three song encore).
The concert committee sold tee shirts with little shroom men on them. I know Steeler ate a bag because I gave them to him. Don’t know whether Jorma and Jack partook. . . . Xanadu!
@johno You know something’s gonna happen, but that deal looked like it wanted to try and replicate the experience using today’s talent while paying homage to those still with us and who actually helped make a the real deal happen. Sadly, (for me anyway) I have a hard time visualizing a half million Americans gathered together today with peace as the theme and the same nonjudgmental acceptance that made the Woodstock gathering the nonviolent wonder that it was. I hope it’s just a case of cynicism on my part and not a true picture of reality.
There’s still a heartbeat today for Woodstock 50. If it does not happen. There’s always the original site in Bethel NY that is having a weekend of song and celebration. Sunday August 18 is open. Wouldn’t it be great if they put Hot Tuna, Canned Heat and John Fogarty together again on Sunday August 18. It would cap off the weekend nicely.

Hello Brother johno…. For a truly clean, pure, genuine and love infused altered state, may I suggest to you that you spend a weekend at Fur Peace Ranch should you get an itch to prompt more of humanity and the supernatural to collaborate. The chow is really good too.

I might be talked in to a tiny speck that induced a background effect…Only because it couldn’t possibly be harmful…But let’s wrap up the lessons of the 60’s with casual wisdom and realize it is a place, visited once by an incredible generation and its accompanying equally one of a kind once in a life time bands, that probably can’t be lived and probably shouldn’t be tried…

I wish I had done more LSD then I did. That was one of the best times of my life. Must’ve tripped over 200 times. At every Hot Tuna show I attended between 1973-1980 and numerous other times typically upstate NY. Seen Hot Tuna over 100 times. Everyone it seemed were tripping at the shows. It was psychedelic heaven. Never had a bad trip. Shit – if I could get some good stuff – I’d do it tomorrow. It is just a higher consciousness. One that is beautiful. Can’t believe I’m still alive. Many a time I had to drive home at night after the shows or go thru the Queens Midtown Tunnel at 6am while still tripping in the right lane going 45 mph. Dropping off friends in Brooklyn. No problem. But we all got home by the grace of God!

I believe Jerry Jeff made the right decision when he moved his gig from Bleeker street to Luckenbach,oh so long ago.
I guess he’ll finally get off that LA freeway.
Too bad ,I hope his friends and family are there to support him.
Spent many late nights toasting him.
When I was back at college and on the concert committee we had a choice in 1975 whether we should have Aztec Two Step, Jerry Jeff Walker or Hot Tuna play for our Spring concert. We luckily chose Hot Tuna. I was lobbying for HT. We added Journey as an opening act. What a GREAT show!
I remember when Jerry Jeff Walker opened for Jorma at the Capitol in Passaic NJ.
Saw Van Morrison at the Chicago Theatre on Wednesday – the show was off the charts. 74 years old and still going strong. I’m not a big fan of moon dance, (heard it way to many times), but he did this funked up, jazzy version of it that was incredible.
He had this girl on percussion that played the vibes on that song – She had more energy than the Duracel bunny.
He ended with G-L-O-R-I-A – why is it I never grow tired of hearing that song?! about a 10 minute jam, where Van just faded off the stage near the end…
Three artists I’ll never miss when they come to Chicago, Hot Tuna, Joan Armatrading and Van the Man.
I think it was Aristotle who said, “If man had everything else in life, but had no friends, he would choose not to live.” To a large extent, the same thing can be said about music.

Saw a Florida license plate today that said: “TUN NAH”
Talked with someone who saw Jerry Jeff Walker Saturday at the Grand Opera House in Galveston. He announced that he has throat cancer, and tried to sing Mr. Bojangles, but couldn’t finish, kept playing his guitar and the audience sang it out for him. Touching, sad moment. He said he hadn’t played in 6 months. Didn’t offer any prognosis, of course. First anybody in these parts had heard. Send good vibes his way. I don’t know how well known he is in the northern climes, but he is a New York boy by birth. Came to Texas as quick as he could.
I hear JacknJorma are going to play the historic Troy Music Hall in upstate NY in November.
It’s a great venue built in 1875!

Peter Frampton is doing a farewell tour. He has a rare muscle disease that affects the flexors in the fingers. Saw him in 2017 along with Steve Miller Band at Bethel NY. He was great. They both were great.

Back in what I call the ” Formative Years ” A couple of buddies and I saw Wishbone Ash at the Philadelphia Spectrum…early 70s and I think Blue Oyster Cult was on the bill. Really enjoyed the show …… see you this weekend Jorma for the G.E. show. When I saw G.E. there last time the interplay between you guys was awesome.

The first show I ever went to in NYC at age 14 in 1970 had a lineup of Wishbone Ash, Blue Oyster Cult and Kiss. I managed to sneak myself and my date backstage after the last set and met some of the band members. She was very impressed “what a hero I was”. I wonder what she is doing today? 2nd show ever was JA at the Fillmore East. Now that was life changing event. Had to “borrow” 3 dollars out of my mothers pocketbook because tickets to the balcony were 2.75.
The philosopher blues man. The interesting part of that existential question is that it can have a different answer every time asked. What’s a guy to do? One thing I do know, she won’t turn a Blind Eye to the Error of My Ways!
Back in the mid-70’s here at OU, my neighbor – a sopor freak – would play incessantly Wishbone Ash and Golden Earring. We’d come back from Swanky’s and jam to some real fine fast hard rock.I can’t be to hard on Bill, tho, since he’s the one who turned me on to Quah. m
