So here it is on an overcast Easter morning. Our family celebrated Passover in our own way here at home. Vanessa and her sister Ginger took Easter to their mom, Virginia who is in a rehab facility recovering from a fall. The girls will be outside Ginny’s window with decorations, signs and well wishes. That’s just how it is here in Southeast Ohio and I imagine everywhere there are people with common sense.
Well, we had our second edition of our Saturday Night WWC concert series last night and we had a great time sending it out to through the ether. I want to thank Myron Hart for leaving his lair in Johnson Hollow to do sound and production and Andie Walla for leaving her infant son at home with dad to do for us what she does so well: direct and produce video! Our daughter Izze ran the long shot camera again and did a pro job. Thanks Izze! Of course major thanks and kudos go to Vanessa, without whom none of this would be possible. Love you girl… always! Our Ranch Manager, John Hurlbut made the 20 some mile trek from his home on the other side of the county to Join me for a song. I’ve have to pleasure and honor to accompany John over the last who knows how many years. Tonight he and I wanted to play a song honoring John Prine, may his memory be a blessing. We picked Angel From Mongomery. Many thanks for this John… on many levels brother. I’d also like to thank the many folks who donated money last night. We will use this to keep the production going until the war is over. Your collective generosity is muchly appreciated!

Jorma, thanks to you and your team for doing these shows and posting them on YouTube. I have been a fan since high school in the seventies – long since wore out my copy of Yellow Fever. Been trying to play guitar off and on since back around then. Have learned a dozen or more of your songs – or blues “standards” the way you do them – like “Walkin Blues” for example.
Have hit somewhat a dead end because (I have been told) my playing sounds like you (at a more elemental level)- and there is already a Jorma Kaukonen! Watching this was kind of like I dropped by your scene one Saturday afternoon, with a bottle or 6-pak, and my guitar I suppose (maybe you would let me interject a few lead runs, or soulful blues double stops – as if I were Eric Clapton). Aside from your fantastic playing, I like the cool way you manage the vocal challenge – always has been a problem for me – lack of range in my case.
I have been told that the sort of music we grew up on/with, at least me (about 15 years younger than you) – let’s call it blues/rock, acid rock, “hippie music” – that nobody wants to hear it anymore. Dying out, almost gone . . . well I guess not that many want to listen to such as rockabilly (from 50’s/60’s) or doo-wop anymore either . . . I would almost refer to it as “classic rock”, but these sort of radio stations today, owned by one or two corporations – Cumulus and ClearChannel maybe – with such limited play lists – you never hear, say, Savoy Brown for example, or Quicksilver doing “Forty Days” – are scarcely even worthy of the name – let alone the good stuff from years gone by – I mean Elton John and Billy Joel and various poppy Top40- put forth as “rock”?
Loved every minute of it.

Thanks for breaking out the Gibson. It has well-earned it’s place in the case at the Psylo, but it’s good to see it in action again. I think you were playing it with Michael at the Swindlefish show quite a while back, seems to me. I was just spinning an old Pair a Dice Found cassette, really like the Happy Turtle song. Great show last Saturday! Thanks to the crew: Vanessa, Myron, Andie, Izzy, Brother John Hurl, and Jorma! Sound and video was spot-on perfect! Highlight was entire show and double thumbs up for “Angel…” with Hurl and “Embryonic Journey.” Blessings to you all and remember, music is good for the heart, mind and soul! I normally don’t throw out song requests because I love ‘em all, however, I’d love to hear some stuff from “Pair A Dice Found:” Parchman Farm, Urban Moon, To Be With You, Flying In the Face of Mr. Blue, SF Bay Blues. Hope WWC starts to subside and we can all get back to FPR in person. Neil Young wrote “Live Music is Better” bumper stickers should be issued.” Amen to that! And while live music in person is best, I think I speak collectively for everyone I know in saying that we appreciate the live-streams in the meantime. Keep on keepin on!
Another great show! These live events put the “Saturday night” back into Saturday nights. They bring folks together and underscore the immense value of culture in our society. This pandemic has brought shared culture to a screaming halt. Concert venues and clubs closed, record releases delayed, museums and galleries closed, etc. It’s so wonderful to have events like these that keep the flame burning bright during this otherwise dark period.
Wonderful show! A great treat during these times. I’m fortunate enough to travel a few times a year to different places to see friends/family and I line up those trips with Jorma/HT concerts. That is, until now. I have tickets for Burlington in July and Asheville in September – we’ll see. Lot’s more important things to worry about for so many. But these Saturday nights are so special!

Another wonderful Saturday night after a good days work around the house. Many thanks to all who participate in making that happen. Now that Been So Long is available in paperback, would it be possible to purchase one and have it signed, so I can preserve my hard cover version? Also, in case you may have an opening for a truly beautiful tune next Saturday, “Living Just for You” may be a good one to bring happiness and smiles to all those tuning in.

Since my guitar lessons have come to a screeching halt, your streaming shows are providing motivation to keep me striving. I was just learning finger roll techniques and hammering on/ pulling off. Been working on Travis style picking for a couple of months. Watching you work and recognizing some of the techniques as you use them have been a real edifying treat, not to mention the aural benefits. Your performances have been about as digitally intimate as it can get. Pixilated right into my living room. Thanks.
