Yeah man... I'll miss ya brother

Yeah man... I'll miss ya brother

So I’m down here teaching on Sanibel Island. It’s a good time… no complaints. I just heard from my friend Michael Falzarano that our old pal Buddy Cage passed today. I really got to know Buddy in the mid eighties. I had met him before, but we never hung. When I moved to New York in ’84 he was playing with Bad Dog and we did some gigs together. We became friends and our orbits circled each each other over the years. He was a lovable eccentric… always.

I know you had some hard times old friend and if there is a better place, you are there now.

Fair winds and following seas….

Our Buddy...

Our Buddy...

Don’t think I was at that one, which would probably explain not remembering it. But thanks.

The Palladium show was in early 1981. NRPS first, Jorma solo second, Vital Parts 3rd. Excellent show, too.

Thanks, Rob. I definitely saw Vital Parts at Palladium at least once, but I don’t remember exactly when, and I must confess I have no recollection of New Riders. (Doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, as we know.)

That’s funny, Brian, I have no recollection of Willie not showing up for the Meadowlands show. I do remember it started early.

    I was at that Meadowlands 1978 Dead show…Willie didn’t show up…It was a day time show…

Today on Sanibel is one of the best days of the year…78, blue skies, and low humidity…Warm sun…

Jorma has to get out there to see the sunsets on Sanibel.
    They are spectacular.

I don’t think Buddy was with them for the Giants Stadium show. I saw them about a month earlier and they had Bobby Black on pedal steel. But anyone here that saw the Vital Parts show at the Palladium saw Buddy with NRPS.

Admittedly, I can’t claim that I was a big New Riders fan. But if Buddy was with them when they were on the bill with the Dead and Willie Nelson at Giants Stadium in September 1978, then I can say I had the privilege of having seen him. (Well, sort of.) Thank you, Jorma.

The nRPS was a better band due to buddy Cage, so sorry for the loss of your very talented friend.
From back home: The Athens News just won several awards from the Ohio News media association, including this one:
    • Best Local Profile – second place. This was for a profile that Athens NEWS columnist Dennis E. Powell wrote on Jorma Kaukonen, co-owner of the Fur Peace Ranch in Meigs County and member of the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame (Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna).

    …and the magic continues. m

We’ve had a warm winter this year on Sanibel and Jorma had good weather…

This is dry season and we’ve had more rain than usual this year…

Sorry to hear about his passing. He was the first person I ever saw play the pedal steel live – or at least that I noticed in my then young life. He was great. RIP Buddy.

Seen the Riders many times with Buddy, always awesome. Sad to see him join the big band in the sky, but they did need a pedal steel player

So glad I got to see Buddy with NRPS at FPR back in 2016. He was an incredible guitarist. I remember chatting with you briefly a few weeks after that show and you mentioned how much fun you had that night sitting in with them especially because you were set up next to Buddy. Thoughts are with his family, friends, and many fans.

I heard him play at Englishtown 1976 but didn’t really know what I was listening to…

Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas had also passed at a biblical 103…
