Thanks for confirming Danny Gatton reference. Saddened by his passing. Glad I got to see live a couple of times..once at the Birchmere in NoVa and once at the old Watermelon Festival in Richmond. He put on great shows both times. @Jorma
The Neowise comet will be around til August. Though the best time to see it is this week. Wait til dark and look in the northwestern sky just below the Big Dipper. Best to be in the country where it’s very dark. Neowise won’t make it back this way for another 6800 years.

Ain’t rained in over a month, along comes a comet and it hasn’t cleared up since I learned of it. Guess it’ll rain until NEOWISE is outta sight. Oh well. I said I like changeable weather, sometimes you just can’t have it all. Maybe the clouds will part along about dark this evening…

.y last attempt at water skiing was an abortive one, but one I don’t think I’ll forget
We went to the grandparents house of my daughter’s boyfriend. There was a group of about 6 kids, all in there early 20’s. The grampa asked if anyone would like to go water skiing. Surprisingly, all the kids remained silent. I had just turned 60 and said, “I’ll give it a go!
It had been about 20 years since my last time skiing. And I had a pretty bad arthritic hip. As Gramps circled the ski rope behind me, my daughter nervously said something to the grandfather. He couldn’t.stop laughing. He circled around again and said he had.to.let me in on their little.talk
Taylor had asked, “Is this safe? My dad has a lot of physical ailments.’ Don’t you love it when your daughter shows that much concern for you?!
Well I tried to get up three times bit just ended up drinking a lot of water. I just couldn’t push off hard enough with my right leg.
Ah well nothing ventured, nothing gained.
I can easily see how playing with someone like Danny Gatton (or, say, Jorma Kaukonen) could cause a gigging musician to say: “Hmm, maybe I should rethink this guitar thing.”
Great points, Jorma. By “best,” I was referring to off-the-shelf, not modified. And I meant to say that Randy California may have had a pre-Sears Danelectro instead of a Silvertone. I wouldn’t swear on it either way. By the time i saw him, he wasn’t using anything like it; i think he was playing a Strat. I know that Jimmy Page used a 1957 Danelectro for open-tuning stuff.
Wow…thank you and Jack and the FPR crew…GREAT show last night..music incredible as always and stories were very much appreciated…especially enjoyed ones about being on armory bills with Link Wray and Ray Charles. One quick question: did Jack say he was playing with Danny Gatton in MD when he decided to switch to bass? I thought that’s what he said but not sure…

WalMart guitar! That’s a first. Who woulda thought… The best dept. store guitar i know of was the Sears Silvertone with amp-in-case. I’d love to get my hands on one in decent shape. Randy California used one well into his Spirit years (maybe his had Danelectro on the headstock) and got an amazing tone out of it–of course it’s the player and not the guitar but the guitar helps.
I’m not sure the term ‘best’ applies here… we made it into something with top quality components. The Sears guitars all said Silvertone on the headstock and I have one where the case is also the amp. Great tremolo…
Jorma, was that a camo colored lazer, fashioned like an AR, on the wall over your left shoulder last night? Never noticed it before, is it new? First time I saw someone play one was Johhny Winter in the mid 80’s. Always partial to his Firebird but he really seemed to like the lazer. I’m not a “gun guy” but was fascinated by it and curious if it had always been there.
That’s a WalMart guitar that we put some real pickups in. The fret markers light up different colors… it actually sounds pretty good for being as silly as it is.

Thanks for all of the Saturday night streaming concerts and particular thanks to the man who has raised more eyebrows than just about anyone in history for making the trek across country to play such great music. Saturday nights during quarantine are nothing short of a complete blast.
Jack, Jorma, Vanessa, Myron, John, Andi…the whole crew: Cannot possibly thank you enough for that amazing show last night. It really was like hanging out in the living room with you all. Besides the tons of fun, you’ve probably done more for people’s mental health than all the therapists out there.
And Vanessa should talk as much as she wants!
The depth of connection between you two guys was on full display last night. The kind of knowing that comes only with decades of close camaraderie was palpable. The only script was the set list. The improv off that script was so natural, I was verging on feeling voyeuristic. Like I was hiding out of sight watching two old friends engrossed on a front porch somewhere. You guys’ propensity to share the intimacy of your relationship up close and personal is a rare gift, and I receive it most graciously.
I’d heard Jack had played once upon a time with my fellow East Texan, Po’ Lightnin’. To hear him talk of that experience, plus finding out you guys learned “Come Back Baby” behind Lightnin’s version of it, was a treat beyond my expectation. Old friends, shine like diamonds. Ya’ll are living proof.
Corners without Exits has always been one of my favorite songs. But I was never able to tell what Jorma was singing in the last line of the “middle eight.” Now, thanks to the wonders of the internet and the Quarantine series, I finally realized he’s saying “The last frontier is lying deep inside.” What a fantastic lyric.
