Maine scallops and pasta

Maine scallops and pasta

A rainy, rainy Sunday here at the Fur Peace Ranch. Last night was our fourth quarantine show but I’ll get to that in a minute. Pouring rain all day long. A good day to stay warm and look out the window, and perhaps give a guitar lesson on Zoom… and have a great home cooked meal. Pasta (Tinkyada gluten free) with a non dairy (unsweetened almond milk) white wine and shiitake cream sauce with fresh Maine scallops topped with a Chardonnay Bellavitano cheese. Big smiles and happy tummies all around!

And… last night another fulfilling evening for us here at the Ranch!

It’s been almost a year since our dear friend Spenser Bohren has been gone. It seems like only yesterday I was sitting on the library with Spenser and his wife Marilyn talking and inviting the warmth of friendship. We all miss him so much but he has left a legacy of song behind him and Johnny did him proud.

That’s about it for this rainy day…

Stay well all!

I hear ya Ted… but I’m not plugged in. This is acoustic with a nice condenser mike and a great sounding room. We’ll do what we can, but this is supposed to be a concert not a guitar lesson. I don’t mean to sound flippant. Sound first. Your concerns are duly noted. We’ll see what we can do.

Def prefer to be yo’ fren RK – so I am sorry you apparently took some kinda offense – none intended.

I thought I was bein helpful by ‘splainin the import of the johno reference to “Il Duce”, as he may have over-estimated the background of the general readership with regard to 20th century whirl history – for the benefit of anyone reading that may actually hail from Rio Linda . . . considered in that context, if anything (not that I’m lookin for it necessarily) perhaps I should get some kinda salutary recognition, don’t ya think?

    @Richard K
johno is correct – Koomoe is Il Duce reconstituted – for those of you from “Rio Linda” – “Il Duce” was the name given (or taken) for Italian fascist dictator
Benito Mussolini from first half of past century, who allied himself (and necessarily the Italian “people”) with Hitler’s Germany and such in Great Banker War II – and was executed when he/it broke down

It’s gonna be either Hilary or Cuomo.
Biden is history. He’s too old and compromised.
    Gonna be interesting.

At least Cuomo is stating the facts..The guy in DC is always FOS…

def Art (Deff Leppard – “Foolin” is good) – “Saucers?” is a real kick in the arse (and I mean that well!)

Within past years, and I don’t remember exactly where, as I have read and heard a lot of Airplane/Tuna/Jorma commentaries and interviews – somebody referred to Jorma as “king of the free-floating air space guitar” or something like that – from essentially minor pentatonic scale with a few major thirds thrown in (for you git-pickers out thar that would comprehend the import of such concepts) Jorma good at development of “something cool out of nothing in particular”

Have You Seen the Saucers – great, rocking song with great guitar solos. And to the question Paul puts out there, “The government tells you … another missile is flying. Have you any idea why they’re lying to you?” Well, yes. The military wanted to keep their top-secret missile tests secret. Duh. So they were happy to see wacko theories about strange occurrences in the desert. What a coincidence that these UFO sightings tended to occur right near White Sands Missile Range! Heh.

Jorma – thank you so much for this blog during the time of plague, it helps to keep all of us sane and inspired. You might want to think about starting a “Recipe” section for all of the wonderful meals you keep describing. Besides playing guitar, cooking is another of my passions. I’m still hoping to make it to Fur Peace Ranch in early October, if the situation allows. I’ve been looking forward to it for years! Otherwise, we’ll get there next year. Stay well.

Not sure whether Sandy is male or female – could be either but most likely female if I may say.

Anyway, you have good taste in cool hippie music. I know Jorma is not a hippie, perhaps never was, but hope you know what I mean. Do you like “Have You Seen the Saucers” – from Thirty Seconds album? I always found that to be a powerful opening number at that show (although I have my own – informed – ideas about “flying saucers”).

Would be a good discussion, don’t ya think? – what does/did indeed constitute a “hippie”? (kinda quiet here lately aint it Jorma? heh heh)

Well, our Governor and Crazy Dan Patrick have decided it’s time to get back to work. Glad I’m retired. I guess we’re fixin’ to find out just how astute the Texan consumers and workers are. My ass, for one, won’t be going out for dinner and a movie, or the mall. It is going to be very interesting to see how the consumer responds. I hope common sense TRUMPS political inanity. Maybe the leaders will wind up following the people for once.

When Jorma is finger-pickin a melody up the neck on metal strings in the Livestream it has an electric tone that is unique…Sort of like the original electricity that goes way back to the 60’s like the electric quality of stars…

Sat there smiling again through the whole show Saturday night. So good! It’s funny how music comes and goes around in one’s head and heart. New Song has and remains one of my all time favorites (as I see it is for others). What a way that first album concluded with New Song opening things up for the Mann’s Fate closing! Two or three years ago when I was having a rocky time physically, every morning I listened to Stars In My Crown. Soothing. Now in the midst of this very strange (and for many, awful) time, for some unknown reason I’m back to “Jorma” along with live recordings. Music is a wondrous! Thanks always, Jorma. Thanks, Fur Peace Ranch.

Retype a massage? I’d pay to see that, too.

  27. Comment made on April 27, 2020 by carey georgas

Random. Ain’t so bad if you’re not making plans. If I retype the massage identically, the it comes back as having already been submitted. Sometimes it goes through. Oh well. Not like I ain’t got plenty time to kill.
What I was trying relate is: I would pay money to read about a person(s) who has lived their life according to the rhythm of the road, only to find a totally unexpected and uncontrollable “road closed” sign dropping like 16 tons. How such a disruption affects people for whom the road has been such a central part of their life and career would be good reading. This is a seminal period in our country, and the road warriors’ plight and adaptation to it will be an interesting part of the history of this pandemic. Again, I’d pay to read such a publication. Just sayin’…

Nice bridge work by Smiles. Is the water shallow enough for him to stand in the river and do his work? Is he going to get to a railing for anyone 79 or 16 years of age or over to use?

Nice looking chow. Left overs the next day in a frying pan would be nice w some garlic and more of that cheese.

I See The Light was quite the abridged version. When you were done you said, Yikes!

I presumed you caught your self unaware, misplaced your bookmark or something, and instead of doing usual sequence of:

    2 verses
the one go around finger picking melody run thru
    the 3rd verse
AND THEN the BIG BIT ROLL, starting at the 7th fret E where Jack use to send sonic blasts through at least one beautiful NYC theater (Beacon),

you instead started the song with I believe the 2nd verse, and then went right to that middle part, you know, the Jack showcase bit, where he would step up stage a tad, with his big heeled boots/shoes, his bellbottom/”Flares” and those big colored glasses, and big bass and big eye brow moves and look tough, cool and ballsie as hell, which as a kid growing up was quite a sight to see. And of course you were there too, thin as a rail, w a Les Paul or something, a tie dye, and a whole lotta flanger, phase shifter or whatever. Loud and it was 2am

Last night you came out of that middle part, (not sure what you would call it, not a middle 8 I don’t think) landed back home, did a verse and out you went……and then you said YIKES.

No harm no foul… Its a great tune to play. So many parts. It can certainly go on for 10 minutes easy.
Always liked the message too…wish I could have always lived it….like “in this world I’m living in, I SEE THE LIGHT, sins are GONEEEEE, now I know what is wrong and RIGHT….. ah, but alas, human nature being what it is and the ways of the world and flesh, the battle rages..

But never too late to yield to the Lord of All, Lord of the Starfields, as Bruce Cockburn sings and work with the Light and then be more able to be a tool, an agent of the Light and be a Light of The World.

Nice show Jorma. Thanks. I hope Ohio opens soon in a safe way.

Another great show last night! Thanks to the FPR crew for great audio and video. Each week brings new treats. Brother John (aka Hurl) brought it once again with a nice tribute to Spencer on “Old Homestead” and his own classic “A Little Faster.” Need to get a CD of JH out one of these days. And “IKYR” was a superb set closer.

Thanks again for coming into my home and sharing your wonderful gifts.
3rd Week In The Chelsea has always been my favorite JA song. I love that the melody is so light and happy but at the same time you can absolutely feel the questioning of oneself and despair of the lyrics. But the best part is you definitely found that sunshine waiting for you a little further down the road. And you most definitely deserve it. Reminds me of Dylan’s Positively 4th Street. I always heard a happy go lucky song because of the melody till I really listened to the lyrics and found one of the angriest most hate filled songs ever. I had to pass on working security at a Joan Baez concert a few years ago and I always wanted to ask her if that song was about her as I have heard told. Probably would have lost the nerve to ask anyway, may have not liked her response!
The Old Hempstead sounded like it could have been a John Prine penned tune. Mr. Hurlbut even sounded a bit like John as well.
Finally, I’d love to have a recording of that rendition of A Little Faster, that mother cooked. Very tasty.
