Hey everyone… Monday the First here, and probably there. Tomorrow is Groundhog Day. What will Phil say? Hmmm… It’s not that cold here, speaking in terms of East Coast winters… it’s just nasty. Drizzling snow for the last 48. I’m waiting for the mud to seep up to the surface.

#36 was a blast, as always. I hadn’t really thought about Hamilton Camp’s Pride Of Man for over half a century. I remember David Frieberg picking it on some giant 12 string. Cool… anyway…

After the show Vanessa was still chuckling about 86’ing the nudge who was saying really stupid stuff on the chat feed. My only comment at time was that it’s easy to be a tough guy sitting behind a keyboard, or like my friend Ben H. says, ‘Everyone thinks they’re a trough guy… until they meet one!’ Before I knew it, my pal MIchael M. up Detroit way sent me this great folk tune done by Jeff Daniels.

Caution: Almost every line is marinated in adult lyrics. This one may not be for the faint of heart or the kids in the house.

Good work Jeff…

Sometimes people just confound me. Like we say down here in the country, ‘Oh well.’

In a more upbeat thought process… fortunately it ain’t my business what people think of me. Anyway, thanks to Jeff for writing and singing it and to Mike for sending it to me.

Moving right along. Groundhog Day tomorrow and who knows what next? Nessa and I have more good stuff coming your collective way.

Keep smiling and.

Stay well!

At Mr ham /eggs .A not very subtle suggestion ,we could blare trumpets .
Well done as powers of persuasion might equate to a very unique performance of Turn my life down ( wouldn’t be disappointed with “In Time “, either .)
    #37 -wow .
    The video was great
    Keep on Truckin

Yo Ham… Jorma here. Where do they find this stuff? Amazing… but it does make it easier to find out what’s going on. This is not a demo. It is THE basic track for Turn My Life Down. Karp found the basic for Highway Song when i was resuscitating that number. Anyway, who knows where these things come from. In terms of learning this tune… or any tune… Chords are important ( well, yeah) but the right hand is where the rubber meets the road. As Roy Book Binder would say… ‘Your left hand is what you know, your right hand is who you are.’

Why only Spenser? It’s just the foto the guy who posted it had… I guess. This is not an ‘official’ video so as far as I can surmise there’s no publicity forethought in the presentation. Glad it’s there though.

      Stay well

It’s a phosphorescence test Lucy lol…We’ve had a weird winter here in Sanibel…Steady mild weather that doesn’t hit the normal coldest low winter temperatures and doesn’t hit the normal warmest high temperatures either…This week had the strongest cold front so far but the lowest it got was 48…

I rarely check in here anymore Richard K. I suspect one person is using several aliases to garner attention and sow discord. Too bad. Jorma and Jack’s music is one of few long term constants in my cultural life. They helped rescue me from adolescent noise like Led Zeppelin. I still listen, but don’t get to read thoughts here of like minded adults regarding this aspect of shared experience. Nor do I get snippets of Jewish philosophical and cultural wisdom I miss since leaving title insurance business.

Incidentally Mr. Kaukonen; did you catch any acts long ago that pleasantly surprised you for one reason or another, music you had maybe perceived as being kitsch, but caused you to think, “Hey, they’re not bad”?

One of the many memorable scenes in the Esteemed” Life of Brian “,was the group sitting in the amphitheater.
The argument was over whether their nemesis would be :
    The Judean popular front
    OR
    The people’s front of Judea
    OR
    The Judean people’s front .
They had turned down the badger spleens and Bird beak delicacies .
The scene where they debate the merits of Roman rule is more amusing

    Tear down the wall?
Tear down the wall MF .

    Volunteers -great album .

    “Popular Front”, not progressive.

  19. Comment made on February 2, 2021 by carey georgas

Just finished a fine article in The Washington Post about Shemekia Copeland and – ready for it? – politics and the blues. She got a new recording out, Uncivil War. Anybody hear of a movement called the Progressive Front? From back in the 1930’s. I hadn’t until I read the article. Quite a provocative piece.

    @Jorma

First of all, I’m loving the weekly shows. Thank you to all involved!

You mentioned that you like a fresh set of strings on your guitar(s) for each gig. I’m wondering if you’re stringing all of those guitars we see weekly on the Q series. Coming from someone who strings his guitar maybe 3 times a year, that seems like an awful lot of work!

    • Comment made on February 1, 2021 by Jorma

Nope… that’s only when I’m paying one guitar for four hours a night in a performance situation. The Martin XP Authentics are one good sounding long lasting string. In this home situation I just play them until they start to sound dull, which usually about four playing ours per instrument not counting ones used for tunings. I just like a bright string.

Lol….I think that’s the same, one and only, talented Jeff Daniels I was fortunate to see in To Kill A Mockingbird on Broadway 2 years ago. Mr. NoNo had to go go!

Is the ground hog related to the wharf rat or the Phosphorescent Rat?

  25. Comment made on February 1, 2021 by Greg Martelli

I don’t know who’s picking the songs ,but Hurl is certainly the songsmith .
Pride of Man ,black cover, burnt umber accents .
Coming from his early career perspective as owner or mgr of a record store ,he brings a unique sensibility to the shows.
We’ll be looking to seeing his welcoming smile at Fur Peace as soon as the fates allow.
