Another dandy from our house to yours.
Believe it or not, got a ‘real’ gig in Delray Beach, Florida tomorrow at Old School Square. Seven PM showtime… two sets. Be there or…
Tonight… Superbowl. Go KC!
@Jorma Jorma, thanks for the info and for being accessible. As my back is healing quite fine and I get out of the house more Imma gonna take a trip up to Virginia City again. There is a Saturday Daytime Lodge up there I could visit and then head over to the Red Dog Saloon to see if Covid has shut their doors. Thanks again Jorma.

Hi Jorma,
Thank you for the reply. I just wanted to put it out there. I like the Hobo Jungle and Elizabeth Jones(witches) song but prefer the final Quah lp:-) To quote you, nuff said…..:-)
Also, In my humble opinion. Ain’t in no Hurry is my favorite lp of yours since the aforementioned lp. Really fantastic! Seasons in the Field is awesome. When you played that with Larry and Teresa at McCabes I was stoked. I’m not sure if that’s a tune you play solo. It’s remarkable. I’ve missed a few quarantine shows in the hospital. All good though. One day at a time for me:-)
So on that note, thanks for the reply and the tunes. Hope brings hope.
Take care to everyone out there on this blog and their families. We’re all in this together:-)
Troy
@BrendanC
If I’m not mistaken, Crumb did a bunch of drawings of the old blues masters. Quite taken with the genre, was (is) he.
Reading Rockaway Blue by Larry Kirwan . A murder mystery and the protagonist is a retired 30 year cop/ Nam vet trying to find information about his son, a NYC cop who had died on 9/11 three years later.
“… but The Irish Pub on Seventh Avenue retained some of the breezy informality that had first drawn them as kids the night they caught Hot Tuna at Carnegie.” -Chapter 21, page 157.
Peace✌🏻️❤️Love All Ways🔥🚲🌹🙏🏻🖖🏼
Book just came out and it’s a nice read, even more so if your familiar with Rockaway.
Hi Jorma,
I left a reply#36. I think I did it wrong and it ended up way down the line. I hope you read it. Thank you again, kind sir:-) I promise I’m better at manning a ship than posting:-)
Hi Jorma and Co,
First time caller. I just wanted to thank you for your music. It’s been an integral part of my life! I’m a yacht captain and have used your music as a soundtrack on countless voyages up and down the west coast. A pure joy!
I prefer seeing you at McCabes but the internet shows have been a blessing. I’m unfortunately battling cancer since last May and my prognosis isn’t good. It has spread despite of my best efforts. Very hard to put into words.
I’m 49 and a struggling with the hand I’ve been dealt. The internet shows have really helped me fight the good fight.
Anyway, I apologize for the sad words. I just felt the need to thank you.
On another more upbeat note, I have a test pressing of Quah that was Pat Iracis copy. Stamped received Sep 7, 1973. It is the deleted one with different tracks on side 2. I know this isn’t a forum for selling, but I’m thinking it should go to a good home. Taking it to the grave seems like a selfish proposition. Let me know if you are interested. Im not sure if it’s the only one out there? It’s my pride and joy, but……now I’m rambling.
Maybe I’m still kicking when you tour the west coast:-). Or maybe a Tunahead boat cruise prior? I’ll be relocating soon to the Sacramento area with family and hope you play in the region soon. Auburn to be exact.
Thank you for reading and hope for one more miracle( a live acoustic show)
Captain Troy
Yo Cap… you’re on target. Sending positive thoughts your way… hope we get to see each other on down the road. As for test pressing stuff… got it, but thanks for asking. Get better…
Times obit today for S.F. underground comic artist S. Clay Wilson. I found a copy of Crumb’s Fritz the Cat when I was 10. Never looked at comics the same again.
I’ll leave the topical angle be. Seems from the Crumb doc that he didn’t dig then contemporary music being created around SF, although he was into old-timey blues and jazz.
Since most JK fans are guitar fans, thought I’d share link to a great interview with John Jackson (guitarist for Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Tom Jones, Terri Gibbs, and others). I saw him with Zimmy several times and thought he was a great guitarist!

Perhaps we should wear out Santana ,he had an instrumental -Balling
I’m going to feed our barnyard animals, they only exhibit appreciation ,especially the “lesser “beasts
What we need is a bartender serving up a new drink”give me a double “of common sense
@Brian Doyle
Interesting take, Brian. I know what you’re saying, and I was there (the 60s).
But I do think there was an underlying sexism, simply because far fewer people were clued in than they are today. Not something necessarily mean-spirited, but there.
Example of the sexism underlying the fun: remember the common term for sex – “balling”? For me, that kinda sums up what’s under discussion.
I believe Brian’s analysis to be correct.
I’m going to advocate that we all wear grey chairman nao, suits.
And that all thoughts are homogenized .
Cant forget the chairman “swimming “ in the Yangtze River in time magazine -head only in the fen .
I had to put nao is as spell check capitalizes Mao.
I’m going to get my ramparts mag out and my Che beret.
I always enjoyed the Zap comics over Ramparts -way too ideological and serious.
I think it’s a 60’s issue…We live in a time where people are being cancelled for little or no reason based on presumptive new politically correct taboos…At the time those lyrics were written the whole idea of the mini skirt was to defy the traditional Victorian hemline with a new liberation and mind-set…I guess the point is that what Marty was floating is exactly the same issue that is causing the tension here which is kind of ironic…I realize Marty veered dangerously close to “she asked to be raped because of what she was wearing” but knowing Marty I don’t think he meant it that way…I think he was humorously floating the conflict between human sexuality and women’s rights for the purpose of provocative lyrics…Which is directly related to replacing one intolerance with another…I wonder what Selma thinks of Grace’s analysis of women’s sexual psychology in ‘Greasy Heart’?…The whole premise of which was it was fair game in a new age…I respectfully beg to differ and suggest the whole era was about people not telling you what to think…
Brian… you’re really over thinking this. He wrote what he thought was a catchy R&B song. I seriously doubt the term ‘conflict’ ever entered his thought process with the piece of fluff. Grace’s Greasy Heart is in another class of writing… there’s hardly a comparison. Dress is a pot boiler… Greasy is thought provoking.
How about the Jefferson Airplane?
Charlatans were the kings of Red Dog. Get the documentary… ‘Rockin’ At The Red Dog!’ Killer piece. Airplane was a different beast.
It’s people like Selma what reinforce my belief that the kids are alright. Keep asking the tough questions. Expect straight answers. I only hope most your questions are directed at straight shooters like Jorma. The times change. If we don’t change with them, we become relics. I, for one, ain’t ready for no museum, just yet.
Woo hoo! The River Flows just got delivered to my door!
Beautiful
Only sane comments and responses on jormblog. Very cool.
Of the many, many fine shows at The Station, Marty and his band’s was one of the very best.
“Oh, good memories, feed my head!” m
I don’t know if the song marginalized anybody wearing their dresses to short .
As for a melody and a song ,I was surprised that it made it off the cutting room floor ,it was uninspired and trite .
No competition to many of Marty’s melodic masterpieces .
I prefer to not be reminded of every one of my immature transgressions, however we will be accountable for all in the end .
Maybe we should invoke the remedy of the medieval flagellants and beat ourselves over our own heads for all of our sins ,
Ouch ,my head would hurt.
Probably Marty voicing what was in his head seeing mini skirts during the 60’s…Not sure men should be yanked by the short leash for humorous expression of the eternal struggle…God forbid Grace be held equally accountable for her stuff…
Marty is not here to weigh in. May his memory be a blessing… but he doesn’t get a pass because Grace may or may not have made questionable statements in other people’s eyes. I must say, to give a man, or a woman for that matter ‘a pass’ for succumbing to the ‘eternal struggle’ is a dangerous argument to make. At the end of the day, none of us will get a pass for anything.
I remember the fashions of the 60’s fondly. It was a good time. My ex-wife, may she rest in peace, was as daring as any soul on the planet but her provocative fashion sense was not there to invite moral editorial comments or sexist aggression. It just… was. Anyway, no matter what your position is on this subject… in my humble, unsolicited opinion… it’s not one of Marty’s best tunes.
Nuff said
Thanks for the response Jorma. For what its worth, I found a couple of articles of interest about Syl and his multiple lawsuits that he’s filed against various musicians / bands throughout the years…..
In one lawsuit, in which he lost then appealed, (not the Airplane) its noted that under the Copyright Act, sound recordings made before February 15, 1972 were not subject to copyright protection.

Thank you Jorma.
Very grateful for your response that is indeed thoughtful. It is of course valid that the song was recorded over fifty years ago, but I think anyone can see why it is so disturbing, especially to young women. That being said, I am already enjoying the Quarantine Concert Series. And circumstances allowing, we will be able to continue this conversation.
Until then, stay well.
Much love from Sweden to Izze and all of you.
Dug Q37. Thank you.
Pure coincidence
Listening to Outlaw County, which I only do occasionally .
Steve Earle had interview with Hurl and Jorma .
Proceeded to promote The River flows .
A rather obtuse find
Hey-o Jorma –
In regards to You Wear Your Dress Too Short, I read somewhere that although Marty claimed to have written this song, it was actually written by Sylvester “Syl” Johnson back in 1965 or so. Johnson sued the band in 2005, they settled out of court and paid him back royalties and restored his credit. Any recollections?
rt
Hey Rich… Hard to imagine the guy who wrote ‘Coming Back To Me’ is the same guy who wrote ‘Dresses Too Short.’ I thought it was a silly song then and my opinion hasn’t changed. I don’t know what band you’re talking about but I have no recollections about being sued. Anyway, it might have been silly then, but I would consider it demeaning today. Just sayin’
Jorma, another great show in the bag. Did JA or Hot Tuna ever play in the Red Dog Saloon in Virginia City, Nevada? How about the Penny University in San Bernardino? I’m still breaking in my finger tips with the new Gibson and with the $1,400 Uncle Joe is going to send me I may be able to add some to it for a weekend at the Fur Peace Ranch for some Great guitar playing and some learnin. Thanks to you and the whole crew for these shows, I guess it’s time to order a shirt and drop a tip in the jar 😉
The Red Dog scene was long gone when Hot Tuna emerged…
In the last 3 weeks we’ve heard Wooden Ships, Pride of Man and Me & Bobby McGee from John and Jorma. Classic saongs played so beautifully! May I suggest that after Volume 2 of the Quarantine Recordings is issued this spring, you consider Volume 3 – Live at the Quarantine Concerts. Those 3 are certainly worthy of an official release. Add to that Pancho and Lefty from a few weeks before and Don’t Bring Me Down from last night and you are well on the way to the third record. Soliloquy for 2 and Do Not Go Gentle both had me mesmerized. Thank you so much for these shows!!!
Heya. I hope you all are doing well.
I’ve recently been listening to the entire archive of the airplane and you have grown to become my favorite band, and as a 16 year-old artist & student who studies the bass as well as the guitar, you have inspired me immensely. However, when I listened to your live album “Sweeping up the spotlight” and came across the song “You wear your dresses too short” I got disappointed as it is not my understanding that this is what you were about at all. Don’t you think it’s very sexist and misleading?
“Just because imma whistle at you,
You say that I’m doing you wrong
Why do you blame me baby?
I didn’t tell you to put it on, no”
I’m trying to keep an open mind here and I am asking for your opinion on this, purely out of curiosity. I hope you understand where I’m coming from.
Peace & Love, Selma
Hi Selma…
Very observant and thoughtful comments and worthy of a thoughtful response. Your analysis of the tune is pretty much right on the money. I didn’t write it and I’m no singing it. I am playing on it so i will accept some guilt by default. To be kind, it’s not Marty Balin’s best writing and you would have to be from another planet not to see this as a sexist song in today’s reality. My fifteen year old daughter would have plenty to say if she chanced on this tune. Just because something got recorded does not mean it should see the light of day.
I guess the good news for me is that I think I see things more clearly today. OK… the work in progress that I still am at 80 is moving on a little. Check out our Quarantine Concert Series on YouTube. Look for Fur Peace TV.
Stay well and if we all live long enough, perhaps we can carry this conversation on in person some time. Here’s link to the show where our daughter, Izze sang the last song with her dad and his buddy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfArgNZUPIU
Know how you feel Joey, Doctor didnt clear me to go to a show (or ride the bike) yet, it has only been a month for the new hip but hopefully we can catch an FPR on the road w/ Hurl show over the summer.
Captain, hope you get some good weather (should be warm anyway). Bostons on the Beach for Conch fritters and Key Lime Pie, if you have some post show munchies Rocco’s Tacos is open late. That Mouse Circus shirt is hilarious, nice job
Go Chiefs (I am guessing Vanessa is still rooting for Brady) back to the Puppy Bowl.
Pardon my ongoing redundancy, but THANK YOU ! ONCE AGAIN !!
“Soliloquy For Two” was a real treat !!! In fact, any tunes from Phosphorescent Rat or Quah are special treats !
You are all supremely awesome ! (Sorry for the plethora of exclamation marks !
HA !)
It’s been over a year since my last live Tuna show, and due to personal, work related circumstances, I cannot attend Delray show. I’m most disappointed. Please come back to Fl. again soon.
Stay positive, test negative.
✌&💖
Hey FPR, I just caught the ‘official video’ for Easy Rider – wow! John’s vocals are soulful, nuanced and right on – and Jorma’s extended guitar echoed Airplane arabesque stylings. An understated tour de force guys. A standing ovation up here in Toronto .
Go KC! Wave of the future!
It would have given a whole new meaning to the “right down here” part if it had happened during that song.
Great show last night, Jorma. I think that “Let Us Get Together” was skipped–unless i was temporarily abducted by aliens for a few earth minutes again last night.
You were not abducted and LUGT was indeed put on hold. 🙂
