While I was on the road with the boys, life was happening at home.

Eight amidst family memories

An eight day journey through light and family memories. The presents are for the kids, the memories for all of us.

Being on the road has been a way of life for more than half a century. Being home over the Pandemic Lockdown has given me a sense of family that I had never really had before. It was good to be on the road again… that is what I do, but I certainly missed the family connection. You just can’t have everything I guess.

It’s mostly good.

Back on the road, there were three to go.

Thank you Jorma (and the HT Crew) for getting back on the road. Saw you at The Egg and The Cap a few days later. So wonderful to be listening, watching and dancing to HT again!
    Have a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY.

Jorma, Vanessa, John Hurlbut, and all of you down at the Fur Peace Ranch, I hope you have a fruitful, prosperous and Healthy Winter Season. There is no way on Earth I could thank you enough for the Free Concerts that got me back interested in playing guitar…AND Banjo, after 40+ years. Because of this I also was able to get reunited with an old Guitar friend of mine, who BTW would make an excellent instructor at your Ranch! I wish my health was good enough to make a Pilgrimage to The Fur Peace Ranch and even take some classes but I am lucky enough to be able to drive down to the local Target for supplies. Again, Thank You Jorma, Vanessa and crew and I hope to visit someday.

Apaches were not all bad. There was an uprising going on back then as well. There was rage and righteous anger.. Remember Walter Cronkite and other “news people” reporting the death count/tally…. 100-200 Americans dying in a WEEK…a week.. On and on. 18 year old steps off plane….gets some supplies, shipped off in a helicopter to an area and is killed within days of being in country. Just graduated high school, took his gal to the dance, had a good baseball season and parents who loved him. What a load of %^&*(… Watch out for war mongers…

Looks what happening in the streets (people in the streets now all over the world)
    Got a revolution.

Lots of things were wrong about the 60s, like Crosby said, certainly the drugs were wrong…. Getting out of wars important. Glad the last president kept us out of war… 58,220 dead in Vietnam…How many more wounded and then dead when home. A million or more Vietnamese dead…

    Pray for peace

A friend of mine shared with me a review of an Airplane show in Charleston WV from Dec. ’67. I wish I could attach it but the writer clearly wasn’t into you guys; he likened the sound to ‘an Apache uprising and a she wolf stuck in a trap’. I’ll send you the thing if you want to see it.

    should it not be 81st?

I could have sworn it said its going to be an Acoustic show yesterday. Did I see that or my eyes getting old? Must be my mistake…I like it all!!!

Man, I had this corn cone up on my toe, and it sure went to hurtin’. As I tried to push the pain from my mind, up from the cranial caldron bubbled an old song I’d long forgotten. “Get Off My Toe” by my patron bluesman, Lightnin’ Hopkins. Pulled it up for a listen, and it sure did ease my troubled mind. Toe’s almost well now.

    Monetizing Kaukonen

Was playing a gig outside and from a distance I heard a cry of “Jormaaaa”… The tone had a quality out of either Beacon theater mid 70s or Capital theater, early 80s…. At any rate, I told the guy my name was Tom and that I learned some hip tunes and beautiful tunings and finger picking patterns from Jorma.

Later on, when just finishing up a Genesis, a woman around Jorma’s age, though I presume, not at all familiar with the music of Airplane and Hot Tuna said to me, “that is very calming and beautiful music” as she threw some cash into me case. The compliment is far greater than the cash, but the cash did buy me some supper.

Thanks for the tunes Jorma. Keeping taking the magnesium, Vit C and Vit D, and some Zinc… Next 20 years are certainly going to be worth sticking around for.

    Oh, to be home again…
I got an observation and resulting question. I’ve been following your touring exploits for 5+ years, if memory serves. The places you go and venues you play are interesting and varied. Just as interesting to me was the pre-pandemic feature of the places you dined, and the stuff they served you. Always fun to see what table you’d find next and what they fed you. Since the resumption of road travels, culinary updates have not followed suit. Is this a post-pandemic reality, and/or are you making use of your mobile kitchen? Vicarious visions of victuals are missed.

Home for the Holydays in the presents of family, memories, and essential rituals. Amen.
A prayer and a candle for you and yours, be assured.

“ Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum
If I were a biddy biddy rich yidle-diddle-didle-didle man”

Your life’s work has and continues to enrich countless other’s lives, I dare say.
(Betcha some great old friends and characters are gonna come out of the hills and hollows for the New Year’s shows)🤪
