It’s been well over a year since I’ve had the privilege of playing in Manhattan. The good folks at the City Winery invited me to come and bring my guitar and so with a smile on my face… I came.

You can’t see the smile… but it’s there!

Four shows… in two days. Playing three hours a night for the first time in well… a long time, is quite different from the Quarantine Concert Series. Good to get back in the saddle!

I was so moved by the response of our friends in the audience at the Winery. Many thanks from me!

The Old… and the new…

Photo by Jorma Kaukonen

It was a new skyline for me here in the Tri-State. I’m walking up the Hudson on the Weehawken side and I look to my right and there is an old friend… the Empire State Building. It may seem dwarfed in this shot surrounded by new architecture, but for a guy of my age, it will always be the One!

Life goes on indeed…

    You must of been gassed doing four shows in two days ! All that practice …..basically a year of practice. Right? Rolling out new old songs and new songs with Hurl leaves us with much to look forward to this year as we all move cautiously back out onto the road…… Stay well and thank you !

    ” One small Point Of Pride” Hamilton wished he hadn’t accepted Burr’s challenge to a duel the second he accepted it . Can you imagine rowing across the river from New York City to New Jersey because dueling was outlawed in New York he had plenty of time to change his mind. Burr was already a good shot but practiced and practiced to make sure he did not come out on the short end of the duel as Hamilton did. Burr was the sitting Vice President and went on the lam . Fuckin Spell check
    anyway VC was where General Washington mustered his troops for the final march down Broadway to say goodby to the British Troops The Bike path now connects from behind the mansion and past the Negro Burial Grounds and goes through Yonkers and all the way up for 754 miles. Love the Rail to Trails and the park. Was blessed to spend an afternoon in the forest with the Elders of the North East Cherokees learning about the Massacre and burial of Chief Ninham and 40 Stockbridge Indians. High Holy Times in a High Holy Place. “Sign me up as a diplomat, my only office is the Park. ” PK. RIP Bob Fass Peace✌🏻️❤️Love All Ways🔥🚲🌹🙏🏻🖖🏼

    WHAT A FANTASTIC NIGHT. BEFORE WE GET TO Q50 ID LIKE TO SUGGEST THE FOLLOWING:
    CAN WE POSITION 2 ADDITIONAL CHAIRS ON STAGE FOR A SONG WITH MOM AND IZZE
    PROVIDING THE VOCALS WHILE JOHN AND JORMA HAMMER OUT THE ACOUSTICS ?
    IM PRETTY CERTAIN THE CHAT ROOM WILL GO WILD.

    The pictures of NYC are what we see when visiting our sons apt. in Hoboken.He lives right next to the ferry service that crosses the Hudson into the City. That all ends when he moves with his wife to her hometown on Long Island in 2 months.

    @John

    Quick search shows JP Morgan displays original pistols, I suppose that’s more likely scenario. The man at VC mansion wasn’t having us on, and believed their set original. He did not recover.

    I have no tie-in to JK music to offer. Last time I tried to synthesize the Van Cortlandts with topical matters, I schitzed out and ended up insulting our gracious host.

    FYI: I’ve had a secret witness come forward and prove Jimi Hendrix was murdered by his manager Michael Jeffery:

    Jorma,

    How do you do it!!?? Four packed and awesome sets in 2 days and late nights in NYC… then driving back to FPR for another stellar evening concert with John, Vanessa, et al.

    Your posts are always inspriring (especially this past year) and then there’s your audio book…without you reading it yourself, I would have missed your incredible life story. The honesty and emotion hit deeply and has stayed with me for weeks.

    I was reminded that exactly 50 years ago last evening (4/24/71)…I was 21 and with friends at a Wash DC war protest, and Airplane showed up on the mall for an evening concert…FIFTY YEARS on the button!!!

    Been So Long is right…sincerely brother, you are a national treasure and your story will live on long after we’re gone.

    Correction; BNY says stolen pistols were a different dueling set made by same gunsmith. I met with county historian years later. He didn’t know any differant, but pistols have not been recovered.

    @Walter Hetfield

    A set of pistols at Van Cortland Mansion in the Bronx were said to be those used in duel. The old Irish caretaker opened case and let me and pals touch them. A couple of years later he was bashed over head and pistols stolen. BNY claims those were fakes, but they haven’t produced originals.

    When I think of Weehawken, the infamous dueling grounds come to mind. Hamilton will live again when Broadway gets the green light.

    Jorma, as the QCS winds down I want to take a moment to thank you. When the world seemed to be in a downward spiral you were there to lift us up. I don’t think I’m alone when I say
    your weekly show was something to look forward to. Each week was a treat into the life and times of a true American treasure. Don’t know if it was your stories, playing with John, Jack, Myron, Izzie or Vanessa, the good natured G rated non political ( for the most part ) banter between all or just the fact that it was a constant weekly commitment by someone during daily uncertainty. I enjoyed it all. Thank you seems small after all you have done but its all I have. THANK YOU JORMA

    Would have loved to have been there for those concerts – wonderful setlists! Thanks for those great photos. Empire State Building – me too. Grew up going into Manhattan with my parents using LIE into Midtown Tunnel. Approach just before tunnel, looks like road ends in cliff drop off (especially through eyes of a kid) – fabulous view of city with Empire State Building rising up majestically. Never got tired of seeing that city! Still love it.

    The goslings look as contended as Jorma .
    The “empty state “ building nicely framed by behemoths .
    Reminiscent of the intro to bless its pointy little head .
    It wasn’t beauty ,but the Airplane ,only to be reinforced by snap of snare and great bass intro .
    Let’s go

    Exactly…..the Empire State Building….it took that third photo for me to feel oriented! Looking forward to tonight.
