Now I’m home for a minute before I head up to Iowa City and the Englert Theater. Plus, I’ll see David Flammang and who knows what mysterious guitar magic will ensue? In the meantime…
More will be revealed.
@carey georgas
I’m not exactly the most religious guy in the world, but I love what Hillel said about the Torah:
“What’s hateful to you, don’t do to someone else. That’s the entire Torah, the rest is commentary.”
@Brad
Very nice, Brad. I believe that in the eye of the Godhead, that is our only purpose. Amen.
Thanks for including Iowa City in your tour stops again…it’s been a day or two since you and Jack were here last. Those Flammangs all sound amazing…
An Ash Wed hymn:
“We have not known thee: to the skies
Our monuments of folly soar,
And all our self-wrought miseries
Have made us trust ourselves the more.
We have not loved thee: far and wide
The wreckage of our hatred spreads,
And evils wrought by human pride
Recoil on unrepentant heads.
For this, our foolish confidence,
Our pride of knowledge and our sin,
We come to thee in penitence;
In us the work of grace begin.”
Our primary purpose is to…Love unconditionally
Hoping you are good busy in Iowa
RIP Milton Hopkins.
Thanks john o and Rob
Here’s an article about the 46th St. Rock Palace along with contemporary photos:
https://abandonednyc.com/tag/brooklyn-rock-palace/
Old theaters are great. It’s always sad when they’re still standing but vacant.
@eaglesteve
The 46th Street Rock Palace was later renamed Bananafish Garden in Brooklyn. It closed in 1973 and was run by the Gambino family’s Sammy “The Bull” Gravano. It’s now a furniture store.
Pray for the Ukraine to keep it free. m
@eaglesteve, @judy – that is a fantastic record, and I just listened to my vinyl (!) version of it Tuesday. Miss that guy.
@kevin….ah, the old Stanhope House – I moved to the area in early ’84 so didn’t get to see PJ’s show but saw Jorma a bunch of times there after; one of the more memorable gigs featured a Harley parked on stage behind him. A motorcycle figured in another show Jorma was to do with Joey Balin, but was unavoidably delayed, as I understood it from Joey when I helped him load guitars back into his car, while riding back from Dollywood. Anyway, great story about Mrs. Creach and congrats on 39 years (I’m just behind you at 33).
Good memories….looking forward to Carnegie Hall in April.
what happened to the 46th street playhouse, bklyn, ny, from 3/22/73 link I sent?
@eaglesteve One of the best shows I’ve ever seen was at the Old Musicians Exchange in Ft. Lauderdale, many years gone. Papa John was playing with Paul Kantner as a duet called Wooden Ships. Somewhere over the rainbow was the most beautiful thing i had ever heard.

Papa shines, as do the enitre band
Little Brooklyn hole in the wall. Afternoon concert
@Judy
Thanks Judy
Coincidence?
An hour ago I cleaned my bedroom and there on the floor was my vinyl collection. What album was it that was first in line? The album you sent featuring Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I’ve had it since it was released in 1971. My favorite song on it is String Jet Rock. Oh how would love to hear that now with Larry Campbell playing Papa’s part. That song’s workout by Kantner, Casady, Creach, Kaukonen and Piazza should be played as loud as possible. I really love it.
I took my future wife to see Papa John at the Stanhope House in 1983. I go to the men’s room before leaving and as I come out I see her talking with a very nice older black woman. Next thing I know I’m being introduced to Mrs. Papa John and she’s giving my lady marriage advice! Must have worked, we’re coming up to year number 39.

Really sad that we couldn’t be there this time. Bummer…
The Sheldon has been many things over the years, but never an opera house! Info here:

Drinking Gourd was awesome. The playing and the sound were exquisite. Well worth fighting through a little ice and wind to hear. Thanks so much for an outstanding evening.
John Henry Creach (May 28, 1917 – February 22, 1994)
Papa John
