Home again and the weather is beautiful. The forsythia is gone and the Red Bud in not far behind!
Spring is definitely here!
Onward…
Happy Mother’s Day V
Keep on truckin Jorma & Jack !! Welcome home ..Enjoy
Heard a blues phrase on the radio ain’t never heard before:
“Got the blues so bad it hurts my tongue to talk”
Tampa Red, “Seminole Blues”
No prob. I checked out the price of those tickets in Marietta (that’s Ohia, not GA); at nearly a hundred bucks a pop for floor seats, I guess Bela, Sam and Jerry will have to do it without me. m
I have to brag on my wife here. Way back yonder before we were a pair, she was the second woman admitted to the carpenter’s local in Dallas. ‘76, I think. She endured relentless harassment, even receiving a settlement from the labor board because one foreman fired her from the job because he “wasn’t going to work with a woman”. She’s a groundbreaker, my girl, and I’m proud of what she accomplished. She was in it for about three years, then got married and moved off. But she hung tough in a man’s world back when there was no place for a woman. Baby’s got sand, I tell you. She can hold her own anywhere.
^ ^ ^
No problem Brad. In my line work Union Carpenter Ive been around all kinds of work.I worked in Atlantic City building casino’s & hotels since mid 70’s. In my later years I was a super. for General contractor overseeing the House of Blues in ShowBoat being built. Met Dan Ackroyd who is the $$$ in the HoB’s. He sent down some of his motorcycle’s from Orange County.
It was great to see HT play there a year later, They teased us with the intro to Volunteer’s . Jorma joked go ask your parents about the song. NOT NICE Jorma
Hey Joe- You are right, part of the job was the installation of steel floor beams to support the weight of the altar area in a 150 yr. old wooden church. I misspoke.
Meanwhile, I’m going to look into this Judy Henske. Thanks for the lead
Check out the song “Snowblind” which Judy Henske wrote and performed with Jerry Yester. It’s definitely worth a quick net search.
@Kevin
I missed seeing your post. I hadn’t heard of her either. Very talented and influential singer.
@Arlen Agreed Arlen. I posted pretty much the same thing at the end of the last thread. As soon as I heard her sing I immediately thought of Grace and wondered if either was influenced by the other. I think Ms. Henske was on the scene earlier than Grace, although they are pretty much contemporaries.
Brad.
Steel workers work in a factory. Iron Workers install steel. I worked in the Construction trades for 40 yrs.
My first job out HS was in a steel mill before moving on.
@mikie
Oh, no, no, no! You caused no confusion. When I see OU I see red, and I ain’t talkin’ about their jerseys. The Red River rivalry often causes reason to flee. I saw OU in your post, and Pavlov’s dog immediately seized ahold of my brain, and visions of Barry Switzer halted any cognitive reasoning. I’m sure Ohio folks can relate somewhat, with OSU – Michigan and all. But I did see Leo Kottke on campus at UT (that’s Texas, not Tennessee). Good cracker, it was. Peace.
This morning I was reading about the death of Judy Henske.. The similarities in her singing style and Grace Slick’s are striking.
Ah, sacre bleu, Pepe’ le Pew.
And there’s Jorma, right of of the Magritte blue with a surreal observation!
I worked on a big 2 year restoration-construction job with all of the trades involved. You can imagine all of the characters and personalities…a steel worker from S. Africa used a beautiful description, observation, which I had never heard before and will respectfully convey upon you: from all your varying thoughts, references, sources of ideas, etc. I dare say Jorma, that you may indeed have a “deep head.”🤪
Regarding Buckeye state colleges, I was a young faculty rat at Kenyon in Gambier during this Kent State week of 1970. I didn’t fully understand at the time but it hit me, and stays with me. RIP
Welcome Home
Sorry for the confusion, “OU” is antique term from 50 yrs ago. Now, the PR folks go with OHIO, which evolved from OhioU. Strange for something that’s been around since 1809 to still have an identity issue (I blame the advent of the mascot “Attack Cat”). m
Speaking of higher education in Ohio, and I do mean higher…I thought Oberlin was pretty far out a half-century ago, until the time we took a road trip down to Antioch…Among other memorable sights was a pack of dogs casually roaming through a dorm…Ohio State (NOT OU!), on the other hand, kind of evoked a state prison.
Thilly me. That could be construed as somewhat arrogantly presumptuous…
@mikie
Wow, Mikie, didn’t know you were a Sooner. I remember Leo Kottke in the early 70’s when he came to UT.
Have to keep an eye out for him coming around here.
Carey… that’s Ohio University… not Oklahoma. Marietta is just north of me.
Jorma
Welcome back. I got to see Leo Kottke last Sunday at that bank theater in Marietta, Ohio, where we saw you and Jack a few years ago. What a fantastic player, hadn’t seen him perform since he came to OU in the 70’s. Don’t know if you two ever shared a stage.
I saw from their ad that your buddies from the Blue Country Heart album are doing a show there next month. I may have to go see that one. m
Hey- we were there when Marty died- got a stack of books in the swag room. This time we waved Hi by your bus a couple hours before showtime- chilly for April…anyhow it’s been 20 years since I took ‘Beginner Bass Guitar’ and met Roy Book Binder at FPR; I was amused that Roy had a Mustang but Jack had a Ford Escort ( what they offered each of them at the airport ) anyhow I bet it’s motorcycle time in Ohio! ( Hope the politics works out OK for you folks- we’re in a Democrat bubble much like the Truman Show here in MA…)
Could there have been a better comeback from the past two years’ dyspepsia? I think not. The venues, the set lists, the fans – there seemed to be a different flair than I’ve observed in following your reminiscences of tours past. Again, a trip for the ages. The world seems a little closer to normal for it.
Hope you share a shot or two of those redbuds when they pop. The redbud and dogwood are my two favorite harbingers of spring, and I got stuck in the city this year and missed them. Goin’ back home to the country in July. Enjoy your springtime in the country, brother. Peace.
