Vanessa, Jorma & Steve

So Nessa gets this texr from Steve yesterday, it turns out he was playing the Adelphia Concert series in Marietta with the Dukes. ‘Come on up,’ he said and up we came. We got up to Marietta a little early so we stopped at TLV a delicious Disraeli eatery right there on Front Street in Marietta of all places.

Check the Cappuccino out:

Steve’s current lineup of the Dukes is perhaps the best ever… and I’ve seen a lot of great folks play with him. Great show! I stood for ninety minutes next to a dumpster to see this show and it was worth every minute. Catch is gig if you can!

She’s a rising senior now and my hair wasn’t white… River Of Time indeed…

As always, more will be revealed.

Caught Steve and the Dukes at the Birchmere three nights earlier and they blew the joint out. The new sound system didn’t hurt either. But you’re right Jorma , this band is killing it and I highly recommend. After they pass through this area I’m always looking to see where else I can catch them. Steve loves the Birchmere and always plays a great show. And we’ll worth your hard earned bucks , long show.

Yes, the current Dukes lineup is wonderful! Eric Ambel is one hell of a guitar wrangler (has played with Joan Jett, the Del Lords, Bottle Rockets, Sarah Borges, many others plus solo albums) and Will Rigby (the dB’s, Kelly Willis, Marshall Crenshaw, Alex Chilton, Matthew Sweet etc.) on drums with long time Duke Kelley Looney on bass. That’s a talented bunch!

Got to get to Marietta someday for the blues festival. So much history in that small town…leading to all the history in Athens and beyond! My traveling for shows has slowed a bit but hope to get back to FPR someday…so many memorable shows at that musical heaven on earth. In the meantime, I was fortunate to catch a couple of great shows here in central Virginia: Jimmie Vaughan and the Tilt-A-Whirl Band (featuring Mike Flanigin on keys/vocals and the Texas Horns) put on one heck of a show at the Beacon Theatre (Hopewell, VA) back on 7/15. Just can’t say enough about JV and his band. Also, opening act was a guitarist by the name of Zack Artis. He was great too…solo artist, finger-picking style, super engaging, entertaining, and talented. Then, last Wednesday caught Tedeschi Trucks Band in Richmond on their 2022 Wheels of Soul tour. Unfortunately, supporting act Los Lobos had to cancel their set. Not sure why but hope all is well with the band. TTB made up for it with 2 full sets…so awesome! I’ve said it for 10 years now, TTB is the finest live touring band in the land (aside from HT and the OU Marching 110). DT is just flat out remarkable and Susan getting to shine more and more on leads…love it! Gabe Dixon (TTB’s keyboard player) opened the night with his own band and they were great too…really nice cover of Dylan’s “Tangled Up In Blue.” Be sure to check out TTB if they roll through your neck of the woods.

Good morning. I sent a supportive comment yesterday in response to the “Take Your Time” song reference above. It included a link to a YouTube video of Jorma playing that song.

It said the comment was awaiting moderator approval, but I don’t see the comment here today. Was there an infraction that I’m not aware of?

Back when GWB the first was Pres. I had a fellow tell me he was “from Tex because we sent our As(s) to Washington!”

The Earle shows at the Ranch were certainly memorable. That’s a great little venue they have in Marietta, but I noted the balcony seats were a bit cramped when I saw you and Jack there. m

Derision would have been understandable. The horses’ asses outstripped the horses down here way yonder back there. And there’s a lot of horses in Texas.

As for dumpster environs ,I’m sure they’re a lot less offensive in Marietta Ohio, then they’re compatriots in Key West ,Charleston or Port Arthur .
Walking or biking coast roads are a breeze, theyres no motivation to short cut the alleys behind the sea food establishment .
If the gulls don’t carry you away the aromas will .

There was no derision intended ,instead a feeble attempt at onomatopoeia.
As for Texas in my opinion ,I like the breadth and scale ,musics great ,foods great particularly some of the Ft.Worth chefs (Tim love & Grady Spears ) .
The beers always cold ,and the music venues are unique ( Billy Bobs ,Gilleys , Greuhne (sp.?)Hall .
Been around the place a few times ,I’d like to get out to the Western region where the Red Sandstone towers are .

Hey Greg, I assume ( knowing the difference between ass and assume is u and me) your spelling of Texas was not a typo. There was a day when I would’ve taken offense. As for this day, all I can say is, “If the shoe fits…”. Anyways, we still got fine specimens of decent folk down here, evidenced by the likes of Willie and Steve.

Jorma’s humanity always amazes me. I mean, standing for ninety minutes by a dumpster…just like any of the rest of us would’ve done!

I wasn’t familiar with that song, but I found a cool version of it here:

Glad to see the Kaukonen’s enjoying a night out. BTW my hair turned white by 35, although it did coincide with the arrival of my daughter hmmm.

If memory serves (always a tricky proposition), I seem to recall Jerry Jeff Walker opening a Jorma show at the Capitol in Passaic, NJ, in the early ’80s.

Steve Earle was fantastic in Treme.

Listened to Steve & the Dukes on this years Willie sponsored 4 th of July bash from Texass .
They performed a song tribute to Jerry Jeff Walker.
The “olde Buckaroo “ would have been proud.
Can’t get off of that LA freeway without getting killed or lost .

Make it decaf for the son of man, a gentle soul who nonetheless caused a row with the wrong crowd a while back.
